COLLIDER: Katee Sackhoff Talks RIDDICK, Shooting in Montreal, Her Record Collection, Getting Cut from PITCH PERFECT, OCULUS, Conventions, Twitter, and More

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub
September 5, 2013

Opening this weekend is writer-director David Twohy’s Riddick. The R-rated film finds Vin Diesel’s character being hunted by mercenaries, and once again, they’re hopelessly outmatched by the anti-hero who can see in the dark. But the mercs and their bounty are forced to team up when lethal alien monsters attack. If you’re a fan of Pitch Black, you’re going to be very happy watching Riddick. The film also stars Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Molla, Dave Bautista, Raoul Trujillo, Bokeem Woodbine and Nolan Gerard Funk.

At the recent press day in Los Angeles I landed an exclusive interview with Katee Sackhoff. She talked about making the film, what surprised her about the filming process, how she was cut out of Pitch Perfect (but still gets residuals), the best part of attending conventions, Twitter, what she collects, Oculus, and much more...

katee sackhoff riddick photo katee_sackhoff_riddick_zps19dfa866.jpg

... Collider: I’m gonna jump back into Riddick for a second. For people curious about the making of the movie, what’s the thing that maybe would surprise them about the actual making of the film? In terms of behind the scenes, the stuff you don’t see in the b-roll, the stuff you don’t hear about. Was there anything that really surprised you about the making of it that fans might be interested to learn?

Katee Sackhoff: "I mean, seriously, that’s such a great question because I think that there’s so many little things that I’m not even thinking of because it’s so commonplace for me. I think that for me, so I can’t really think about it, but the thing that gets me the most, the things that are the most fun for me, is like the scene at the very end of the movie where I’m harnessed and I come down, and to see that happen, it was on a little, the size of a four car garage space, with a mountain. A mountain that was built it, that was probably only twenty feet high, and a harness on a crane, and me dangling from the harness, and Vin [Diesel] sitting on the side of the mountain. That’s it. And then to see it finished is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Just to see the mud demons climbing up the mountain and him fighting for his survival, and my character coming out of nowhere. It’s amazing! I was like, “Oh my God that was so cool! I did that!” No I didn’t, Katee. You’re on a harness on a thirty foot mountain. I think just things like that, just to actually see it happen and then see it on camera, or you know, in the film is such a completely different thing..."

ROBOCROC - UFO FILMS VIDEO: NEW MOVIE SNEAK PEEK # 2- PREMIERES SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2013 AT 9/8C ON SYFY

Catch this exclusive sneak peek of Robocroc. Premiering Saturday Sept 14 at 9/8c.

A military nanotech experiment goes awry, infecting a huge crocodile in a zoo and transforming it into a metal killing machine.

Robocroc stars Corin Nemec (Stargate SG-1) and Dee Wallace.

Source: UFO Films

When a top-secret unmanned spacecraft disintegrates on re-entry, its mysterious military payload crash-lands in the crocodile habitat of a place called Adventure Land, a combination water park, amusement land and world famous crocodile exhibit. Following its pre-programmed instructions, the payload – a next-generation nanotech-based combat drone – finds a host in the form of the park’s prize twenty-foot Australian Saltwater crocodile, Stella. She is the largest Saltwater croc in captivity. Immediately upon infecting its host, the drone payload’s nanobots begin to transform Stella from an organic, living creature into a lethal killing machine with only a single directive: Survival!

Before Chief Zoo Keeper Tim Duffy and reptile biologist Jane Spencer are able to figure out what’s going on, they find the park taken over by the government team responsible for the secret project. As the crocodile continues to transform, it escapes the crocodile exhibit and enters the water park, running amok, killing dozens of patrons. The park is evacuated, but a handful of teens are trapped behind – including among them, Duffy’s estranged son.

Duffy and Jane set out to rescue Duffy’s son while the government team and military personnel scramble to stop the rapidly evolving croc but nothing works. After their best efforts fail, the now fully-evolved ROBOCROC escapes the park and rampages further forcing a massive military deployment to stop it.

Still following its prime directive: RoboCroc enters the city sewer system. With time running out, only Duffy has the knowledge and experience that will allow him to get close enough to the croc to destroy it. In a desperate gambit, Duffy enters the sewer system armed with his knowledge of crocodile behavior and a tactical Electromagnetic Pulse Generator (EMP)...

Cast includes Corin Nemec, Lisa McCallister, Steven Hartley and Dee Wallace.

MASTERPIECE - PBS VIDEO: 'FOYLE'S WAR' PREVIEW - PREMIERES SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2013 AT 9/8C

As the Iron Curtain descends across Europe, DCI Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) returns from America to a country in the grip of the Cold War and in the care of MI5.

Michael Kitchen stars as Christopher Foyle, the straightforward sleuth who, along with his loyal friend Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks), is drawn into a web of Russian spies, ex-Nazis, and atomic secrets.

For the first time since 2010, Foyle's War returns to MASTERPIECE Mystery! In Series VII's three riveting all-new episodes — The Eternity Ring (Sep. 15), The Cage (Sept. 22) and Sunflower (Sept. 29), Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks revisit their signature roles as the serious, steadfast sleuth and his loyal friend. But this time, they face cases set against a backdrop of a new war that is less explosive – but no less deadly – than the previous.

The Eternity Ring

1945:- A group of scientists observe the testing of an atomic bomb at Los Alamos in the New Mexico desert. A year later Foyle (Michael Kitchen) is approached by Hilda Pierce (Ellie Haddington), now working for MI5. Her boss Sir William Chambers (Nicholas Jones) explains that a Russian defector, Gorin (Dylan Charles), has supplied them with news of the Eternity Ring, a group of Soviet sympathisers bent on betraying Britain's atomic secrets. Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) is now working as a secretary to Professor Fraser (Stephen Boxer), one of the suspects who was present at Los Alamos and Foyle meets up with her, being introduced to Fraser and his colleague Max Hoffman (Ken Bones), a Polish communist who escaped Nazi persecution. Both work at Armwell Atomic Research Station. Hoffman connects Sam to Foyle and she is sacked but when uranium is stolen from Armwell and the thief murdered she joins Foyle in investigating the Eternity Ring - as well as helping husband Adam (Daniel Weyman) stand for election as a Labour MP.

Guest stars include Ken Bones, Stephen Boxer, Kate DuchĂªne, Dylan Charles, Tim McMullan, Joe Duttine, Ellie Haddington, Nicholas Jones, Daniel Weyman, Jennifer Hennessy, Sam Clemmett, Gyuri Sarossy, Nathan Gordon, Christopher Fulford, Jeremy Swift, Philip Judge, Gabrielle Lloyd and Emma Lowe.

Ragin Cajun Redneck Gators

(Syfy, 9 p.m.)

In the quest to find the next Sharknado, aquatic-life-based weather events simply would not do. (Though your What’s On Tonight? correspondent is still shopping a screenplay for Prawnsoon over here.) And so the bold researchers of Syfy Laboratories toiled away deep into the night, scouring other cable-TV phenomena for inspiration. Everyone said they were mad, but they’d show you who was truly mad—and after nodding off to a Duck Dynasty marathon, the men and women of uncompromising vision and limited budget had their (mad) eureka moment. Part redneck. Part gator. All schlock—and right up Scott Von Doviak’s alley. BEHOLD! Ragin Cajun Redneck Gators.
