THE ATLANTIC WIRE CALL SHEET: 'The Big Bang Theory' Is the New 'Friends'

by Richard Lawson
January 4, 2013

So The Big Bang Theory, CBS's sitcom about how smart people are silly, has broken its second ratings record in as many months, with Thursday night's episode "The Egg Salad Equivalency" attracting a mind-walloping 19 million viewers, with a 6.0 rating in the key 18- to 49-year-old demographic. So that is about as big as a sitcom gets. Toward the end of its run, Friends was topping out around 20 million viewers, meaning Big Bang is now standing shoulder-to-shoulder with one of network TV's biggest and longest comedy successes. That is mighty impressive for any show, let alone one without much watercooler or blog buzz like Big Bang Theory. (People watch it, but do people really talk about it?) What does this mean for the future of the show? Well, basically it means that Johnny Galecki is going to be very rich, not that he isn't already, and that creator Chuck Lorre will be stuffed and mounted in the CBS HQ lobby once he dies and will be worshiped as some sort of deity. And that he can now make any show he wants, really. So get ready for Jerks and Blonde Ladies, coming to CBS in autumn 2013. [Entertainment Weekly]

The BiG Bang Theory airs Thursday at 8/7C on CBS.

VANCOUVER SUN: Hollywood North: Vancouver’s Sara Canning takes a vacation from vampires and velociraptors

Actress talks about her love of delving into the archeology of her roles

By Mark Leiren-Young
January 3, 2013

After running from vampires and velociraptors it’s no wonder Vancouver actress Sara Canning wanted a holiday on Hawaii’s Maui.

Sitting outside a shave ice shop in the surfer town of Paia, Canning told The Sun about her recent adventures on the new Space series, Primeval, the CW hit The Vampire Diaries, a new comedy with the director of National Lampoon’s Vacation and a microbudget indie film where she plays a woman who gets buyer’s remorse after hiring a hit man to knock off her beau.

Canning plays a “predator control expert” in the Space channel’s new made-in Vancouver series, Primeval: New World. “Basically, my character is a conservationist and she gets thrown into this team of dinosaur hunters. The really great thing about my character is she’s very badass, I was running around for five months with guns. She’s also a grounding force in the show because she’s an expert in animal behaviour and that lends itself to understanding human behaviour as well.

Although the cast of Primeval isn’t being chased by raptors or raptor robots, they are still being chased. “It’s pretty cool because we don’t use much green screen. We have a guy who runs around in a grey ninja suit and he’ll chase us like a raptor. We use him as a reference, so it’s pretty great for developing that old thing called the imagination...

sara_canning2

... Canning says she loves acting because she loves people. “My dad always tells me it takes all types to make the world go around. And he’s said that to me since I was very little and I think it had a lasting impression because I’m so fascinated with the study of people and why they are the way they are. That’s my research and my archeology, if you will, when I get a role. I’m so excited to attack a part from every angle of what makes a person a person. And I’ve been really lucky because I’ve played pieces where I’ve had to research women in the 1800s and what societal restrictions were placed on them and I’ve played a bounty hunter. It’s been really wild...

Primeval: New World cast includes Eureka's Niall Matter, Sara Canning, Danny Rahim, Crystal Lowe, Miranda Frigon and Geoff Gustafson.

[NOTE: Primeval: New World moves to Tuesday at 10pm beginning January 22, 2013 on Space Channel in Canada. The series will premiere in the US on Syfy in 2013, and in the UK on Watch Channel on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 9PM.]

READER'S DIGEST CANADA: Rachel Skarsten: Lost Girl's Latest Supernatural Citizen

By Nathan Whitlock

It takes guts to go up against a werewolf. And if that werewolf happens to be a cop who is not above showing a little fang to get his way? No small thing. Such was Rachel Skarsten's introduction to the leather-panted, lust-fuelled, good versus evil world of Lost Girl, the fantasy series that has become a major hit for Showcase and, more recently, the U.S. network Syfy.

Called in to audition for the part of Tamsin, a new feather-ruffling character in Season 3, the 27-year-old Toronto native had to spar — verbally, at least — with Kris Holden-Ried, who plays the aforementioned lycanthrope detective Dyson. (In Lost Girl, humans share space with an unholy host of mythical creatures, most of whom look a lot like regular people — though more stylishly dressed...)

rachel_skarsten1

... Given the show's reputation for fearless, butt-kicking female characters, Skarsten went all in. "I came right up to Kris's face and he forgot his lines," she says. "We had to stop." She thought she'd blown her chance. Producer Jay Firestone knew she'd nailed it. It can be tough to join a popular show midstream, especially one as packed with sexy beasts as Lost Girl. But Skarsten rules the moment she appears onscreen. Tamsin is, like Dyson, a cop straddling both the human and monster worlds. Not much for manners, she doesn't walk into a room; she strides — and always with a slight, menacing smirk, as if she's just waiting for an excuse to rip out a throat or two...

The new season of Lost Girl premieres January 6 in Canada on Showcase, and on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10/9C in the US on Syfy. CLICK HERE TO VIEW A SEASON THREE VIDEO PROMO

WEEKEND CRITIC'S CORNER: Weekend TV: 'Blue Bloods,' 'The Good Wife'

What's worth watching, and what might not be, in prime time this weekend.

... Blue Bloods

CBS, Friday, 10 ET/PT

Fox has football, so Friday's best series, Fringe, is still on break. But ABC and CBS are airing all-new lineups, which include an outing of Blue Bloods that finds a distracted Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) struggling to catch a serial killer while worrying about an accident that has sent his son to the hospital. Blue Bloods may never be a critical favorite, but any show that keeps Wahlberg on the air has that at least going for it.

What to expect this season: For the first time, the season-long arc has marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) chasing a mystery not a bad guy. Thirty years ago, a man fell from the sky with a bag of cocaine. The story behind it is something Raylan's jailed father Arlo (Barry) could help unravel. "Arlo's confronted with that and does something in the first episode that we hope is shocking," exec producer Graham Yost says, "and that's part of what sets the whole mystery in motion. I will say this, at the end of last season, Arlo had basically said, 'I was gonna shoot a guy who I thought was you in order to save Boyd [Goggins],' and we kinda thought we were done. And then as we were playing around with this mystery, it was like, 'Oh, this involves Arlo.' So Arlo's actually a huge character this season."

LOS ANGELES TIMES SHOW TRACKER: Lana Parrilla: An evil queen and a Brooklyn hippie

By Jevon Phillips
January 3, 2013

Lana Parrilla, who plays Regina Mills/the Evil Queen on ABC's "Once Upon a Time," doesn't look very menacing as she reaches over to help with the French press coffee carafe on a recent trip to a Hollywood cafe. There's definitely a softer side to the sometimes vengeful monarch, and to the Puerto Rican/Sicilian actress who inhabits the fairy tale role.

I grew up in Brooklyn and was tough — kind of loaded with attitude — and then I came here. I'm sure people found me kind of intimidating,” Parrilla says. “I didn't fit in on any level when I moved from Brooklyn to Burbank — on any level. And then I met a bunch of hippies and I became a little hippie myself. A Brooklyn hippie.

It's that dichotomy that has seemed to fuel not only Parrilla but also the show itself in its second season. As “Once Upon a Time” returns to ABC on Sunday, the characters now know who they are (fairy tale denizens transplanted to a Maine town called Storybrooke years ago by a curse) and have to cope with this knowledge and the return of magic to what was once a magic-less world. Parrilla's Mills, who also is the city's mayor, fights to gain the acceptance/love of her adopted son Henry while resisting the urge to use magic — and sticking it to Snow White's daughter Emma Swan any time she can.

Mills was one of the few characters who actually knew who she was as a fairy tale being, and she, as well as the show's producers, kept the secret safe for most of the first season...

regina1

... “I wanted to confuse the audience, so I would do different takes. One where she had the knowledge that she was the Evil Queen, and some where she didn't at all. I would let producers and editors tell which story they wanted to tell,Parrilla says. “In the beginning it was a creative choice to keep them really different. Then down the road, it's been a blending of the two characters. Now the contrast happens more in the writing, where, in the second season, she's on this road to redemption, but in fairy tale land, it's back to the moments leading up to the curse, so she's the craziest she's ever been. I love the contrast...
