SCIFI AND TV TALK: Haven's Bree Williamson - State of Mind

by Steve Eramo
10/01/2012

As a psychiatrist, Haven’s Dr. Claire Callahan never knows what to expect when it comes to her work or the patients she treats. A big part of her job involves caring for “The Troubled,” a group of townsfolk who suffer from a supernatural affliction that sometimes turns their lives and the lives of others into a living nightmare. Not everyone in her profession is equipped to handle such a bizarre and dangerous workload, but Claire is not deterred by such a challenge, and neither is the actress who plays her, Bree Williamson.

My character is very smart as well as abrasive and to the point when she talks,” says Williamson. “Sometimes Claire tends to say just what’s on her mind and with very little filter, which makes her funny, quirky and a joy to play. I enjoyed that a great deal and didn’t find it at all a challenge, but definitely fun. Again, she has this thing going on where her mouth moves before her brain can figure out if she should say what she’s going to say. There are times when Claire might get on peoples’ nerves a little bit because she’s intuitive and knows exactly what’s going on. That’s not always welcome, especially in a place like Haven where there are so many hidden things, if you know what I mean.”

Claire Callahan makes her debut in the third season Haven episode Stay. Claire arrives at Haven Police Station intent on speaking with Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) following her recent abduction and subsequent rescue. Instead, she ends up out in the field with Audrey and her partner, police chief Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant), searching for what appears to be a pack of naked, wild savages, or are they? Williamson and the rest of the show’s cast and crew braved the elements during the filming of this episode...

NATURE - PBS VIDEO: 'SIBERIAN TIGER QUEST' SNEAK PEEK - 31ST SEASON PREMIERE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2012 AT 8/7C

Hunted almost to extinction, the last wild Siberian tigers can only be found in the forests of the far eastern Russian frontier-but not easily. Ecologist Chris Morgan embarks on a challenge that will fulfill a lifelong dream - to find and film a Siberian tiger living wild and free in Russia's far eastern forests. To help him, Morgan turns to Korean filmmaker Sooyong Park, the first individual ever to film Siberian tigers in the wild.

Park spent more than five years watching and waiting for a glimpse of the elusive creatures, confined sometimes for months in tiny underground pits or 15-foot hides in trees. His technique was unconventional, but produced more than a thousand hours of wild tiger footage that told the story of a three-generation tiger dynasty. During their time together, Park teaches Morgan the secrets of tracking tigers—where to look and what to look for in these vast, seemingly-uninhabited frozen forests. Eventually, Morgan’s mentor and guide leaves him to his own private quest, and it is up to Morgan to follow the tracks and markings of these giant cats, searching out spots where tigers are prone to hunt, setting up cameras he hopes will also capture a precious image of a wild Siberian tiger.

"Siberian Tiger Quest" premieres on PBS Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 8pm ET and is part of the 31st season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET for PBS. Major support provided by Canon U.S.A. Inc.

SMASHING INTERVIEWS MAGAZINE: Michael Rooker Interview: ‘The Walking Dead’ Ambles into Season 3

September 30, 2012
by Melissa Parker

Born in Jasper, Alabama, Michael Rooker left the Deep South at thirteen years old to live with his mother in Chicago. His breakthrough film role was playing the title character in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, a film based on the confessions of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.

Rooker has appeared in numerous films over the years including Mississippi Burning, Eight Men Out, Sea of Love, Days of Thunder, JFK, Cliffhanger, Slither, Super, Tombstone and Mallrats. He has made appearances in the television shows Crime Story, The Equalizer, The Outer Limits, CSI: Miami, Las Vegas, Law & Order, Chuck, Criminal Minds, Psych and Burn Notice.

The versatile actor currently portrays Merle Dixon on AMC’s post-apocalyptic drama series The Walking Dead. The third season of the show is scheduled to premiere on October 14, 2012...

... Smashing Interviews Magazine: Let’s talk about The Walking Dead and the return of Merle Dixon. Isn’t Merle a bad guy?

Michael Rooker: "Merle is not a bad guy. Merle is a survivor, and he’s living now along with every one of these survivors in a world that is different. You no longer have to be politically correct. You can do whatever you want. There are people in this group that want to set down these rules that society had set down prior to the zombie apocalypse just to try to maintain some semblance of a civilized world they’re living in, but it ain’t civilized anymore.

There are monsters out there that will eat you. You’re no longer the head of the food chain, baby. They’re eating your ass up, so survival is key and Merle is the ultimate survivor. We haven’t really seen Merle doing much surviving except for what happened on that rooftop, and that is extreme. That proves to everyone watching that Merle is a human being and not some classified bad guy. Merle is a human being that is big time living, surviving and fighting. That’s who Merle is...

... Question: After watching the season opener of Hawaii Five-0 last week, I am going out on a limb here with some wild speculation that Doris [Mommy McGarrett] let Wo Fat go because she couldn't shoot her "other" son! What a wild plot twist that would be: Steve has been chasing his brother all along. Reel me back to sanity or say it's so. — BR

Matt Roush: I wouldn't put anything past this show when it comes to ludicrous plot twists, but that would be quite the stretch. Doris shows up again in the Oct. 15 episode, so maybe you'll get another piece to your puzzle then — or maybe it will fan the flames of some more wacky theories. Isn't TV fun?

... Question: I asked you about this last spring before Fringe was renewed for its final season and you responded that you too liked last year's one episode that fast-forwarded to the year 2036 and completely changed the story and timeline of the series and the role of the Observers. Now that the last season has kicked off, I wanted to ask you a couple of follow-up questions. Obviously, having been renewed has freed the creative team behind this great science-fiction show to go much further in this new and bold direction with the story line. I know that based on your response to my question back in the spring, this was not a direction you expected them to take, so I assume you were surprised? Moreover, do you remember any precedent where a show, freed of the need to worry about ratings and renewal (kind of like a politician not having to run for re-election), has rebooted a show with the same characters and actors but changed the story and time lines so dramatically? And is this a very unique situation or do you think this may embolden others in similar situations to do so in the future? — Raymond

Matt Roush: I find I'm always surprised by where Fringe takes me, usually in positive ways, but I've been living for a while with the knowledge that this time jump to the battle against the Observers would happen, so I can't say that this latest reinvention has been a shock to my system. As noted in my weekend roundup, I'm on board with how this season has started and will be with it to the very end, and am very glad they're getting a chance to finish the story, even in a somewhat abbreviated fashion. As always, I pause at answering the "historical precedent" part of questions like this out of fear I'll miss something obvious, but when thinking about low-rated shows that altered the form of storytelling and its timeline in its final chapters with an almost devil-may-care abandon, the show that comes to mind is ABC's Vietnam War classic China Beach, which framed much of its powerful fourth and final season through a prism of memory, giving us closure by jumping ahead in time to show us how many of the characters ended up, in each case haunted by their war experiences (seen in flashback). It's still one of the favorite shows I've covered in all of my years on the beat...

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Todd Masters - Master Of His Domain

by Steve Eramo
09/30/2012

What do the feature films American Mary, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Trek: First Contact, The Haunting in Connecticut and Slither as well as such TV series as True Blood, Six Feet Under, Fringe and Stargate SG-1 all have in common? If you said Todd Masters, you are correct. Over the years, this multi-talented and always busy artist, designer and FX (effects) creator has lent his considerable skills to numerous projects on the big and small screens.

Currently celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, his company, MASTERSFX, has studios in Los Angeles, California and Vancouver, British Columbia, both of which Masters spends a great deal of time at overseeing the design and creation of all creatures great and small. From a young age, such imaginative expression fascinated him, and he was determined to become part of that creative outlet.

As far back as I can recall, I enjoyed entertaining in one form or another,” says Masters. “I’ve been told that as a child, I did some outlandish ‘effects,’ from a plate of noodles on my head to talking to the neighbors’ dog, that kind of stuff, and like the fat kid in [the 2011 feature film] Super 8, I took my dad’s camera and filmed the neighbors. I did my own stunts – and forced the other kids to do them, too – and shot, edited and created basic gags, including making squibs out of fireworks. I loved filmmaking and from the time I knew what the term meant, I’ve loved FX as well..."

... “Our Vancouver studio is in process of delivering a few aliens for season three of Falling Skies, while also working on some other television shows including Arrow and Rogue as well as another feature film. On top of that, we’re moving to a bigger shop – yikes! The Los Angeles shop recently wrapped The Munsters pilot and the fifth season of True Blood. Currently they’re working on Fringe as well as starting on season six of True Blood in addition to some other stuff that I can’t discuss at the moment...
