TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Eureka, Dallas, Falling Skies, True Blood, Damages

Jul 16, 2012

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow on Twitter!

Question: I hope you'll mention the passing of one of my favorite shows, Eureka. With all the hoopla around the finale of The Closer and the buzz about new and returning summer shows, the final episode of this quirky and creative Syfy gem will probably go unnoticed by most. Over the years it's become one of my favorites, serving up some high concept sci-fi stories with a healthy dose of humor and heart. Although I knew it was ending, the announcement last week of the July 16 "series finale" made me sadder than I expected. It's like nothing else on TV and I will miss all these wonderful, eccentric characters and this charming, if sometimes dangerous, town. Thanks for your insightful columns and recommendations! — Lenore

Matt Roush: Thank YOU for setting me up so nicely to salute a show that has brought me quite a bit of pleasure these last few years, one of the more successful blends of inventive fantasy and clever-to-slapsticky comedy, with an endearing lead performance by Colin Ferguson as long-suffering Sheriff Jack Carter (heading a very appealing ensemble). I've enjoyed this last season quite a bit: the culmination of Carter's romance with Allison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), the twists and turns in rescuing Holly's consciousness (so adorably embodied by Felicia Day) from the matrix where the Astraeus crew was trapped for the first part of the season, and really, anything involving the cheerful android Deputy Andy (a character intended as an homage to the late Andy Griffith's Andy Taylor, which adds a bit of extra poignancy to this farewell). Tonight's finale (9/8c), in which the Department of Defense pulls the plug on funding the town, includes a few digs at the network which did much the same thing, but it's mainly a good-natured hour that acknowledges (via Carter) that "we've had a pretty good run." And with intersecting wormholes causing havoc one last time, Eureka-style, there's a nice moment where the entire show's history flashes before our eyes, reminding us how much fun this show has been. There's a surprise twist that should leave most fans very satisfied, and I'll leave this with the reawakened Holly's realization: "Wow. Wormholes, cyborgs, endless possibility ... no wonder you guys love this place..."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: 'Eureka’ star Colin Ferguson shares his memories as SyFy series ends

With finale on Monday night, a look back at how the Jack Carter role looked uncertain at first, and how the show had a 'weird tone'

By Colin Ferguson
July 16, 2012

After five seasons, SyFy’s “Eureka” has its series finale Monday at 9 p.m. Colin Ferguson, who stars as Jack Carter, sheriff of the fictional town of Eureka, Ore., shares his memories with the News.

jackcarterwallpaper2

... We shot the first thirteen episodes in a vacuum, playing with the weird tone that the show had. “Is this working? Am I going to regret some of these choices when I see the thing?” No one really had any idea at that point.

They asked me to come to San Diego Comic-Con that year to introduce a night where the SyFy Network was going to screen “Stargate Atlantis,” an episode of “Battlestar Galactica” and our premiere.

I was excited to be invited anywhere, so I went and got to introduce the night. I only stayed five minutes because watching myself with a thousand other people is not the most comfortable thing in the world.

But I remember watching, and I don’t even remember if it was my joke or not, but I watched the joke on the screen, my head turned to the audience, and they laughed right on cue.

I went back to the screen and the drama kicked in and my head swung to the audience, and they appeared to be into it — it was shocking. That was a great moment to realize that this vacuum we were working on might actually work...

The finale takes some jabs at the show's Syfy treatment, which should delight fans, while providing a satisfying conclusion that leaves the door open for future movie extensions, which should also delight fans.

MANIA: TV WASTELAND: FARE THEE WELL EUREKA

The Syfy staple bids good-bye.

By Rob Vaux
July 16, 2012

Tonight, we say good-bye to Eureka, the quietly stalwart Syfy staple that takes a final bow after five seasons. The show was never a blockbuster like The Walking Dead or The X-Files, and its expensive production kept it from turning a big profit. The bosses at Syfy's parent company Comcast dropped the boom to the consternation of fans everywhere.

And yet, the precise manner of its departure suggests that fans have more power than we might suspect. Rather than waiting until the end of the series – with its inevitable cliffhanger and unresolved plot threads – the network delivered a cancellation date before the fifth season began, giving writers time to form an exit strategy. I'm not entirely convinced it did so out of the goodness of its heart, but rather because it reduced the possibilities of backlash and spared the station some publicity headaches. Regardless, the move provides fans with the dignity of closure and leaves Eureka a complete creative statement.

Beyond giving the audience a comparatively soft landing, the move also reflects how much TV has changed in recent years. With increasingly sophisticated plot threads and complicated arcs, the notion of simply dropping a show has become less and less viable. More importantly (at least from the bean-counters’ perspective), it more readily allows people to pick up the show after the fact. No one wants to get involved in a program if they know it ends unresolved, but a proper "The End" makes the prospect of watching a DVD set, video download, etc. much more appealing. Big hits often have that luxury regardless, while flops lack the fan base to make much of an impact if they're cut off. But when a show falls somewhere in the middle and still merits such consideration – as Eureka has – it suggests that our brave new multi-media world still works for the consumer sometimes. And that can be a tremendous comfort.

The series finale of Eureka airs this Monday at 9:00 PM EST on Syfy...

SERIES FINALE: “Just Another Day” is the title of this week’s episode, but it’s anything but. So along with the anything-goes atmosphere, enjoy the jokes that are not-so-subtle allusions to the show’s treatment by the network. As Eureka the series is shut down, so is Eureka the town…
