April 2012

Amanda Tapping and Sandrine Holt lock lips on screen. Was it a stunt or true to the character? We chatted with the Syfy star about the kiss, her role as a director and embracing the full spectrum of our reality...

In “Monsoon” (Season 4 Episode 4) Magnus and Charolette Benoit (played by the stunning Sandrine Holt) share a passionate kiss with a harrowing experience. While waiting in a remote airport, both Benoit and Magnus find themselves hijacked by enterprising thieves with a hidden agenda. Magnus saves Benoit and the two rescue the hostages. The episode not only ends with a jaw dropping kiss, Magnus adds a huge
cliff hanger when she says, “I haven’t been kissed like that in a very long time.” She then passionately reciprocates, hinting that there’s an ocean of information we have yet to discover about this immortal character.

The kiss has received positive and negative reviews. From praise, to bewilderment, some bloggers have even wrote they will no longer watch the show. The kiss may have rattled some audiences, but Tapping is unfazed by the furor.

I have always maintained that, Helen, having lived as long as she has and having the type of personality she has, that she would be a bi-sexual person. After 270 years, men are fabulous, but, there is so much more out there. I think she is a very open, sexual and engaging person.” Tapping and the producers of the show have gone though history, asking themselves, “Who would Magnus have had affairs with?” Tapping entertains the idea of people like Dorothy Parker would be of interest to Magnus. “I have always maintained that Helen, in as much as her paramours have been men, would have really amazing relationships with women and I have never shied away from that...

Game of Thrones season 2

NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington on His Jon Snow Theories, Favorite Fan Site, and Season-Two Sex

By Jennifer Vineyard
3/30/12

Last season on Game of Thrones, the men of the Night's Watch were riding off to investigate whatever it is that lies beyond the other side of the Wall, while the people of Westeros braced for war. Among our hardy band of Black Brothers is Jon Snow, the bastard son of Ned Stark, who is about to learn more about wildlings, wights, and skinchangers than he ever imagined. "You know nothing, Jon Snow" is something he will be told over and over. Kit Harington, who plays Jon, however, knows quite a bit — and he took a time-out from prepping for his new movie, The Seventh Son, now shooting in Vancouver with Jeff Bridges, to fill us in...

Photobucket

... Q: Well, if you can't talk sex, maybe you can talk zombies, because we're going to see more of them this season.

Kit Harington: "The way I think of it, the Others, or the White Walkers, are this ancient race of people, and they use the zombies, or the wights, to be their army. But they're not as bad-ass as the White Walkers are. I think that's what's so fascinating about this series, and especially the new season, because there's something stirring in this world, and the fantasy elements are going to play a much bigger part. We opened the first season with the White Walkers, but then they went away. And now we have the feeling that something is changing. We've got dragons, magicians, witches, zombies, loads of different elements, all coming in a subtle way; we're not smacking you in the face..."

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Q & A with Eureka's Colin Ferguson and Jaime Paglia

By Steve Eramo
04/16/2012

It was back in 2006 that Syfy’s Eureka premiered and the-then U.S. Marshall Jack Carter along with his daughter Zoe wound up in the small Pacific Northwest town called Eureka after having a bit of car trouble. Neither of them realized that what started out as a small inconvenience would forever change their lives. Carter found himself in the middle of a scientific mishap created by one of the local geniuses and he helped save the day. His efforts resulted in a job transfer to town sheriff, and ever since then it has been one big adventure for both Carter and Zoe.

Sadly, Eureka is coming to end an end this spring, with its fifth and final season beginning tonight, Monday, April 16th @ 9:00 p.m. EST/PST, on Syfy. A couple of weeks ago, Colin Ferguson (Jack Carter) and series co-creator, executive producer and co-show runner Jaime Paglia happily spoke at length with journalists about their work on the series. The following is an edited version of that Q & A. Enjoy!

Photobucket

... Q: This is such a basic question, but what do we have to look forward to with this final season of Eureka?

Colin Ferguson: "Well, I just want to say right out of the gate, that I’m usually the king of pessimism. I’m the king of like, well, we did okay. However, over the past couple of days I’ve watched the first three episodes (of season five) and I’m so proud of them from a production standpoint, a writing standpoint and an acting standpoint. I’d put them up against anything. That might sound cocky and stupid, but I’m so excited for this season to come out. It’s the best thing that we’ve done. Jaime, you can take it from there."

Jaime Paglia: "Gee, I never even make Colin happy, so that’s high praise indeed (he jokes). I do feel like our last two seasons, seasons four and five, and if you want to call it 4.5 in there as well, that everybody has really done their best work.

We just had the most amazing creative team, from our cast and crew to the writing staff, and we’ve really raised the bar once again with the level of work, I think, even after season four. What you’re sort of dealing with over the course of these back episodes are the ramifications of the experience that our characters have during the first three episodes of this (fifth) season.

So storylines will be spun out of their experience, not just psychologically as far as what’s happened to them on a character level, but physically as well with what they’ve gone through and how that actually impacts individual storylines
."

CF: "And this season there’s some of the funniest stuff that we’ve done. I mean, this is the show that we always wanted to make, where things are really character-driven and fun. They (the writers) did such a great job of knowing this cast and oh, this person does this and we’re going to let them fly, and this person does this and we’re going to let them fly. It was really exciting for us."

JP: "Yes, this season was the most fun to make..."

Game of Thrones season 2

NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden on Robb Stark’s Growing Pains, Renly Fantasies, and Hating Joffrey

By Jennifer Vineyard
4/13/12

If power is calculated by who wins the most battles, then Robb Stark, the King of the North, is the most powerful of the five kings in Game of Thrones. While he tries to shore up allies — sending his mother off to make a treaty with King Renly and his foster-brother Theon to make an offer to Balon Greyjoy — Robb spends his time sneaking up on other regiments, taking them by surprise. His ultimate goal is to defeat the Lannisters, one of whom, Jaime, he already holds captive. So far, so good. But as readers of the George R.R. Martin books know, good luck can be short-lived in Westeros. The Scottish actor Richard Madden, who plays Robb Stark, was in town recently, and was good enough to hold court with Vulture and discuss his thoughts on his first time in New York, which of the GoT moms would win in a fight, and wanting to kill Joffrey...

Photobucket

... Q: And now as the season progresses, we're getting glimpses of how Robb operates, how he uses his direwolf Grey Wind, how he responds to the men in the field ...

Richard Madden: "He's acting a lot; he's acting at being a man. I think that's something a lot of young men do: You act at being a man, and before you know it, you are one. In that scene with Jaime in the cage [in the season premiere], Robb is posturing. He's acting like a king. And then you see him with Theon, and you're like, Oh, he's the same guy he always was. But he has to have this mask on all the time in front of his men. Everything that happens to him this season, it's all these defining moments: the first time he starts to fall for a woman, the first time he and his mother start to have different views on doing things, the first time he's addressing an army of men..."

FORT WORTH STAR TELEGRAM: 'Eureka' found creative way to connect with audience

By David Martindale

Most of the time, you never know whether a TV series will be a long-running success or a dead-on-arrival flop until it's actually on the air.

But in the case of Eureka, a Syfy channel viewer favorite that begins its farewell season at 10/9C Monday, leading man Colin Ferguson knew it would be a home run all along.

He had it on good authority. A psychic told him so.

"We were shooting the pilot and in the hotel where we were staying there was a psychic convention," says Ferguson, who plays Jack Carter, the sheriff in a top-secret town of scientific geniuses. "Salli Richardson-Whitfield and I went and actually had our futures read.

"The psychic said, 'It's going to go for a while, but it's not going to be what you think it is.' And nothing could be more true."

Eureka -- which seems as if it has been on longer than four seasons because some seasons were stretched out over two years -- has never been a conventional show, even by sci-fi standards...

THE DESERET NEWS: 'Eureka' returns for its fifth and final season on Syfy

By Mark Rappleye
Sunday, April 15 2012

For four seasons Eureka has been science fiction’s favorite little town, and its quirky community of geniuses has become a staple of Syfy’s primetime lineup. “Eureka” is currently Syfy’s longest-running scripted series and returns for its fifth and final season on Monday, April 16, at 9/8C. As the show starts up its final season, however, viewers will need to be either die-hard fans of the show or Eureka-like geniuses themselves to understand and follow exactly what is going on...

... Season four left the citizens of Eureka reeling after the government’s latest project for them, which included assembling a crew and spaceship, the Astraeus, for a faster-than-light journey to one of the moons of Saturn, ended in a mislaunch resulting in the mysterious disappearance of both the Astraeus and her crew. The incident left many of the show’s main characters separated from family members or loved ones, and with a mystery: where is the Astraeus and her crew, and what caused the ship to launch unstoppably early?

In the season five premiere this Monday, the crew of the Astraeus returns, but while only a few hours have passed for them, during which they unwittingly have to emergency land the ship back in Eureka, more than four years have passed for the rest of the town. The crew and the town then have to cope with the various changes that have taken place, both in the administration of the town and in each of their personal lives...

... Question: I noticed a strange coincidence recently. Mark Pellegrino plays the evil figment of a main character's imagination in both Being Human (Syfy version) and Supernatural. I know that character actors are pigeonholed — by definition, but I've never seen an actor serve the exact same purpose and play the exact same personality on two different shows in the same week. Granted, there are different back stories on his characters in both shows, but it still seems like a really odd coincidence. I suppose this is more of an observation than a question, but you've been kind enough to indulge me in the past. Have you noticed this sort of pattern yourself? I find that it takes away from my enjoyment of the show when I spend more time thinking about the actor than the character he is playing. Although it's probably just a matter of actors needing to work, and playing a recurring character on two different series probably doesn't suck. Thanks for your always appreciated insights. I look forward to the "Ask Matt" column every Monday. It's nice to have a voice of reason on the Internet and somewhere to turn other than fan forums. — Pallas

Matt Roush: Thanks for that. Couldn't do this column without you and the many other contributors, who continue making my own relationship with TV more interesting. I guess it is odd when a familiar face to genre viewers (he was also Jacob on Lost) is doing double duty in such visible roles on popular cult series. But far from taking me out of the show, I usually find myself responding with delight when a favorite character actor appears in a variety of roles. That was certainly the case when Pellegrino turned up as Brenda's flamboyant lawyer on The Closer, revealing a wickedly comic flair I wasn't prepared for. Mark Sheppard also comes instantly to mind, with a busy resume that includes Battlestar Galactica's Romo Lampkin, Supernatural's Crowley, Warehouse 13's Regent Benedict Valda, to name a very few. I'm always glad to see him, even when he conjures up memories of his past work while I'm watching his latest. The fact that these sorts of actors keep getting work is good for them and for us...

Supernatural returns with new episodes on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 9/8C on The CW.

Warehouse 13 season four premieres this summer [possibly Monday, July 9, 2012] on Syfy.

Battlestar Galactica is airing in reruns on BBC America.

Being Human season three premieres on Syfy in January 2013.

The last five NEW episodes of The Closer premieres Monday, July 9 at 9/8C on TNT.

BLASTR: Colin Ferguson: Eureka's final season 'as dark as we've ever gone'

By Kathie Huddleston
Apr 16, 2012

As Syfy's quirky show enters its final season tonight, get ready for a Eureka filled with extremes, said actor Colin Ferguson. It starts off with a life-and-death situation for the Astraeus crew, and then things really get freaky in a three-episode arc that resolves the season-four cliffhanger.

"The first three [episodes] are as dark as we've ever gone, but then there are definitely two, maybe a third one, that are as funny as we've ever gone. So we've really made it darker and then funnier ... and the extremes are better. It's a really, really fun ride this year," said Ferguson, who plays Sheriff Jack Carter...

by Matt Roush

Send questions to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow on Twitter!

... Question: As a Fringe fan, I have participated in the Twitter campaigns on Friday night as I watch the show, but I can not help wondering if these type of campaigns really make any difference. Many viewers seem to DVR Fringe or wait until it comes out on Netflix, and no fan campaign is going to change these viewing habits enough for the nightly ratings to drastically change. So do you think these campaigns work when there is little increase in ratings? — Mandy

Matt Roush: The networks take many factors into account these days when deciding the fate of a cult "bubble" show like Fringe. Social media (and the attention paid by more traditional media) are playing a role as well, but to spare you from my generalizing, let me steer you toward the best story I've read on this topic in a while, by my colleague Michael Schneider. Bottom line from my POV: It can't hurt to let your passion be known to the network and/or to advertisers in whatever form — although sending tchotchkes seems to be out of vogue — but fan campaigns have limited effect if the show doesn't somehow pull its weight or otherwise make sense economically. Still, with Fringe more than most shows in its situation, I wouldn't lose hope...

... Question: As I sat in front of my TV watching Once Upon a Time, it occurred to me how aggravated I become when I watch this thing. Were it not for my husband, who enjoys it, I would gladly find something else to entertain me. That being said, please tell me that you have some insight as to whether or not Regina/The Evil Queen (whatever!) is going to get her evil plans dashed any time soon. I'm growing very weary of watching the "bad guy" come out better than the good every single week. Thought the concept was interesting at the beginning, but now it's just an hour of frustration. Thoughts? — MJ

Matt Roush: I try not to stay ahead of the story on this or any other show — this column aims to be spoiler-free (at least concerning things that haven't aired yet) — and with new episodes returning this Sunday, I guess we'll see how Regina/Evil Queen fares now that David/Charming's wife Kathryn has been discovered among the living, essentially clearing Mary Margaret/Snow, or so you'd think. Keep in mind that even revisionist fairy tales do mostly tend to turn out "happily ever after," but not before a lot of suffering at the hands of evil. This being an ongoing series and not a two-hour Disney movie, it's not likely we'll see many actual resolutions (happy or otherwise) for a while, but if they're smart, there will be more reversals of fortune and frustrations for the bad guys to make things less predictable. Even so, I still find myself enjoying anything that happens in fairy-tale land more than the intrigues of Storybrooke. It's not a perfect series by any means, but I'm glad something this different is a hit, and it's an enjoyable way to spend an hour on Sunday before the heavy lifting begins later in the night...

TV GUIDE: Colin Ferguson Previews the Final Season of Syfy's Eureka

Apr 16, 2012
by Michael Logan

Is this really happening? Eureka is back for its fifth and final season Monday (9/8c, Syfy) with a humdinger of an episode that has the starship Astraeus landing safely on Earth after its unplanned launch. But the crew members weren't in outer space for only a few hours like they thought — they were out there for four years! Naturally, the folks back home have moved on with their lives. Kids have grown up. New romances have blossomed. And sinister forces are now in charge of Global Dynamics. TV Guide Magazine spoke with Colin Ferguson — aka Sheriff Jack Carter — about these wild developments, the show's surprise demise, and what's in store for the series finale...

Photobucket

... TV Guide Magazine: What a way to start your last season. This sounds crazy.

Ferguson: "It is crazy! We find out what really happened to the Astraeus and the story steamrolls from there. We've got an unexpected villain, scenarios that are real and not real, people existing or not existing. It's all about the trick of being human in a world where you can replicate everything. And on top of that we've got a badass dragon coming! I think the season premiere is the best episode we've ever done. We went a million dollars over budget on that hour — it's that gorgeous — then we all had to suffer for it during the remaining episodes. [Laughs] But it was worth the pain..."

'Firefly' reunion alert! Adam Baldwin reunites with his 'Firefly' co-star Nathan Fillion tonight; he plays tough-as-nails detective Ethan Slaughter, who's Castle's new partner now that he and Beckett are on the outs. We love Joss Whedon shows and all, but we don't like seeing our Castle and Beckett apart, so let's hope this new partnership is short-lived.

Eureka 5

EUREKA

Syfy's amusing adventure Eureka returns tonight (9 ET/PT) for its fifth and final season.

That return also brings back the crew of the Astraeus — though in typical Eureka fashion, that is not the end of the story or the problem...

Castle

CASTLE

On Castle (ABC, 10 ET/PT), Castle's estrangement from Beckett causes him to find a new partner — played by Nathan Fillion's Firefly co-star Adam Baldwin.

While that's a very welcome pairing, the impetus for it is sure to bother those viewers who have grown tired of the show's handling of the will they/won't they Castle/Beckett dance.

Granted, the characters belong to the writers, not to viewers, and those writers get to decide when and whether they get together.

But if they are going to keep them apart, they have to find reasons to do so that don't strike viewers as childish, annoying and absurd.

Given Castle's track record, its writers have earned some leeway — but they wouldn't be wise to push it much further...
