THE MORTON REPORT: Q & A with Brian Dietzen, NCIS's Jimmy Palmer

By Mindy Peterman
February 7, 2012

Brian Dietzen plays Jimmy Palmer, assistant to David McCallum’s character Ducky Mallard, on CBS's hit TV show NCIS. Palmer, as Dietzen describes him, “assists on autopsies, assists at crime scenes and anything that has to do with the dead body. He will help out Ducky as much as he can and in the process generally makes inappropriate comments and quite often gets the stinkeye from Gibbs [Mark Harmon].”

Dietzen has been with the massively popular show for eight years and when he talks about those years, it seems like he hasn’t regretted a single moment. This week marks the airing of the show's 200th episode, and Jimmy Palmer fans will want to take note: to make the episode even more noteworthy, a very special surprise is in store for you...

Brian Dietzen

... Q: You began on NCIS as a guest star and now, eight years later, you’re a regular on the show. What has it been like being on NCIS this long and how has your character changed over time?

Brian Dietzen: "Originally I was only supposed to be employed for a day. Every actor knows that you always hope for the best and that you’ll be back. So I was back the next week and the next week and eight years later I’m still working [on the show].

It’s interesting. From the first day I don’t know if I would have made different choices for my character had I known it was going to go for several years. I made kind of insecure and peevish choices for the character because I thought it was only going to be a one-day thing. Eight years later I’m trying to keep that up a little bit but have the character grow as well.

I think the cool part about the show is that each one of those characters stays inherently in their place in their role. And then they grow incrementally in small spurts here and there. Eight years afterwards we’ve gotten to see Jimmy Palmer stand up to his father-in-law or get engaged and start making moves toward a little bit more confidence than what he had in the beginning.

On the whole, the character will always be Jimmy. [When] people say, ‘That’s a Jimmy Palmer type of thing,’ you kind of know what that means. He’s insecure...

Being Human Season 2 Monday

COLLIDER: Executive Producers Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke Talk Syfy’s BEING HUMAN Season 2

by Christina Radish
February 6th, 2012

The Syfy drama series Being Human, currently in its second season, follows three roommates – vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer), werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington) and ghost Sally (Meaghan Rath) – who try to lead normal lives while fighting the temptations of their supernatural side. This season, the three friends are all on their own dark and destructive paths, with people from their pasts returning to threaten their futures. As they fight harder than ever to maintain their humanity, it is put more in jeopardy than ever before.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, executive producers/writers/showrunners Jeremy Carver (Supernatural) and Anna Fricke (Men in Trees, Everwood) talked about how Season 2 has evolved from what they established in Season 1, why they think their show has managed to succeed when so many other remakes and re-imaginings haven’t, how the individual journeys will affect the core friendship of the characters, how much they draw on already existing creature mythology versus using their own imagination, the ways in which the new characters will affect the existing ones, and just how dark things will get this season...

Photobucket

... Q: When so many TV remakes, re-boots and re-imaginings have failed, especially over the last few years, what do you think it is about this show that’s really allowed it to rise above that and succeed on its own merits?

ANNA FRICKE: "I think we had an amazing template and amazing original material to work with for the first season, and what I appreciate about the second season is that we’ve jumped away from that. But, there’s always going to be overlap because we’re swimming in the same pond. I think it’s just a really strong concept."

JEREMY CARVER: "Furthermore, I think we have a principal cast that met a very stiff challenge, in Season 1. Everyone, including us, had a picture of what they’ve already seen, and the British cast was an extraordinary collection of folks. To watch our three characters mesh and just leap off the screen in the way they did, you can’t help but just get really jazzed and be like, “We really have something here.

FRICKE: "Yeah, the chemistry that they have is responsible for the show working."

CARVER: "So, it all feeds on each other. It feeds on the scripts getting them excited, and then their performance gets us excited, and this energy courses from us to the crew to the cast. It’s a very, very positive working environment for everyone involved because I think everyone really believes, very strongly, in this show, in its own right. There are going to be inevitable overlaps sometimes, just by virtue of them being a couple seasons ahead of us, and you see things on their show that we’ve done. It’s unavoidable. But, we’re very, very excited and proud to present Season 2..."

Lost Girl Monday

COLLIDER: Ksenia Solo Talks LOST GIRL, LOCKE & KEY and BLACK SWAN

by Christina Radish
February 6th, 2012

On the drama series Lost Girl, airing Mondays on Syfy, actress Ksenia Solo plays Kenzi, a con artist and thief, who is extremely street-smart and resourceful. She is the only true confidante of Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus that feeds off the sexual energy of humans, and her wide array of contacts makes her very useful. Regardless of the darkness in her past, Kenzi’s focus is now on protecting Bo from a world that will never understand her as well as she does.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ksenia Solo talked about what attracted her to this role and series, that she’s always loved fantasy and sci-fi, the cool wardrobe and looks she has as Kenzi, getting to work little bits of herself into the role (like getting to speak Russian and play the drums), how tight the whole cast has gotten, and promises that you can always expect the unexpected with this show. She also talked about how much she enjoys personally interacting with fans, her thoughts on social media, her shock and disappointment that Locke & Key (in which she played the role of Dodge) never got picked up to series, how proud she is of her involvement with Black Swan, and how amazing the Life Unexpected fans still are (even though the show was canceled awhile ago)...

Photobucket

... Q: The relationship between Bo and Kenzi is such an interesting part of this show. What was it like to develop that relationship and dynamic between your characters, and how has it been to work with Anna Silk?

Ksenia Solo: "The Bo-Kenzi relationship is really unique. I think every person – me, definitely – wishes that they could have a friendship like this. These are two girls that are bonded together for life. It even goes beyond a sisterhood bond that they have. They both are willing to die for each other, at a moment’s notice, without ever thinking about it. Kenzi, especially, because the way that Bo and Kenzi meet is under a very strange set of circumstances. Kenzi is forever grateful to Bo for saving her life. The fact that these girls would die for each other is just really, truly special.

And, working with Anna [Silk] is a dream. She not only is an extremely talented actress, but she is the sweetest and one of the funniest people I have ever met. We have a great time. We’re gearing up for Season 3 soon, and as the show progresses, our bond progresses as people, and as Bo and Kenzi. We’ve gotten to the point where we just feel like family. Like Anna says, you feel each other’s rhythms, so we already know what the other person is going to say, before they even say it. It’s definitely a dream, especially when you have to spend so many hours with someone. If you guys don’t have that acting chemistry, or that chemistry as people, it makes your job really hard. I definitely feel lucky that it’s her. She always makes it fun. It’s like a marriage. She’s like my husband or wife, in a way...

... SHOWDOWN IN THE HOLLER: This season of FX's Justified just keeps getting better, masterfully juggling violent suspense and the drollest of humor, with things coming to a head tonight (10/9c) when "Dumb & Dumber" duo Dickie Bennett and Dewey Crowe are busted out of prison in one of the most tragicomically chaotic capers in recent memory. The ultimate target: a fortune in cash allegedly left behind by Dickie's late (and much lamented) mother Mags, stashed away in Noble's Holler under the care of Ellstin Limehouse. But with U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens sniffing around, things inevitably get complicated, leading to quite the pivotal showdown at Mags' old store — where the betrayed locals have painted "Benedict" over the "Bennett" signage. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder faces a threat within his own crime organization, when his restless underling Devil hears a tempting proposal from the truly devilish Mr. Quarles (Neal McDonough, who metaphorically kills in his big scene of evangelical fervor). I absolutely adored the end of last week’s episode, when Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) confronted Neal McDonough’s well-dressed, cockily smiling tough guy for the first time, and was so perplexed by the guy’s confident, aggressive attitude that Raylan reached into his pocket, drew, and fired. But what he drew was not his gun, but his smart phone – and what he fired was the photo button. Tonight, there are even more confrontations with unusual weaponry, including, at one point, an automobile.
