THE PROVINCE: VIFF players chase their passions between TV gigs

by Glen Schaefer
September 29, 2012

Go to a party at CinCin, the second floor restaurant on Robson, and everyone tells you to try the risotto.

I got into various conversations, and missed every tray of appetizer-sized risotto plates that swished by. Oh well, they tell me it’s to die for.

The occasion was Friday night’s party marking the Canadian Images program at the Vancouver International Film Festival. These days, most of those images seem to be on TV, at least around Vancouver’s production scene. Some 15 TV series, both American and Canadian, are filming or are about to start filming in or near the city...

Supernatural premieres on a NEW night, Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 9/8C on CW.

... [Sonja] Bennett is also among the ensemble playing dysfunctional couples in director Katrin Bowen’s Random Acts of Romance. Bennett clinked glasses with Bowen and fellow Random actor Amanda Tapping at the party.

Tapping, meanwhile, has joined the eighth season of the B.C. filmed CW series Supernatural as a recurring character. The new season starts airing this month, and Tapping filmed her first scenes last week. Internet wags say she plays an angel in the show’s continuing battle between heaven, hell and earth, but Tapping isn’t talking. “All I can tell you is that they said ‘action’ and ‘cut’.”

... Actor-director Ben Ratner is another who frequently keeps busy on the small screen, but this night was taking a break from the editing suite, where he’s putting the finishing touches on Down River, an indie ensemble drama set in Vancouver’s music and arts scene. He wrote and directed that movie, which stars Helen Shaver as the dying mentor to a group of younger artists played by Gabrielle Miller, Colleen Rennison and Ratner’s wife Jennifer Spence. Expect that movie on next year’s festival circuit – after visiting the set this past summer, I’m stoked.

Spence, meanwhile, is looking forward to a second season as a regular on the Showcase sci-fi series Continuum, in which she plays a Vancouver cop. The show starts airing this month in the U.K., after scoring strong numbers in Canada earlier this year. The second season starts filming in January...

RAY HARRYHAUSEN MOVIE MARATHON - TCM: SCHEDULE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2012

20_million_miles_to_earth1

08:00 PM 20 Million Miles To Earth (1957)

A crashed spaceship unleashes a rapidly growing monster from Venus. First spaceship to Venus crashes into the sea off Sicily, with two survivors: pilot William Hopper and a fast-growing Venusian monster that just wants to be left alone (but fights back when frightened). Climax takes place in the Colosseum in Rome. Intelligent script, fast pace, and exceptional special effects by Ray Harryhausen make this one of the best monster-on-the-loose movies ever.

Cast includes William Hopper, Joan Taylor, Frank Puglia, John Zaremba, Thomas Browne Henry, Tito Vuolo, Jan Arvan, Arthur Space and Bart Braverman.

earthvsflyingsaucers1

09:30 PM Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers (1956)

Space invaders attack the nation's capital. Matter-of-fact presentation gives tremendous boost to familiar storyline (alien invaders order us to surrender peaceably--or else). Literate dialogue, subdued performances, and solid Ray Harryhausen effects make this a winner that belies its B origins nearly every step of the way.

Cast includes Hugh Marlowe, Joan Taylor, Donald Curtis, Morris Ankrum, John Zaremba, Thomas Browne Henry, Grandon Rhodes and Larry J. Blake.

Photobucket

11:00 PM First Men in the Moon (1964)

A scientist's experimental space craft puts him in the path of an intergalactic invasion.

horror_of_dracula1

08:00 PM Horror of Dracula (1958)

The legendary count tries to turn his enemies' women into his bloodthirsty brides. Probably Hammer Films' best shocker, a handsomely mounted retelling of the [Bram] Stoker tale, with fantasy elements deemphasized. mystery-of-the-wax-museum1

08:00 PM The Mystery Of The Wax Museum (1933)

A disfigured sculptor turns murder victims into wax statues. Vintage horror film strays somewhat into excess "comic relief'' and contrivances, but plot of madman Lionel Atwill encasing victims in wax, with Fay Wray next on his list, is still exciting. Filmed in early two-color Technicolor; noteworthy as first horror film with contemporary urban setting.

Cast includes Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Glenda Farrell, Frank McHugh, Allen Vincent, Gavin Gordon and Edwin Maxwell.

09:30 PM Doctor X (1932)

A reporter investigates a series of cannibalistic murders at a medical college. Police have tracked the "full-moon strangler" to Lionel Atwill's experimental laboratory. Ludicrous Grand Guignol chiller (Fay Wray's entrance has her screaming--for no reason at all) is a must for horror-film buffs because of its Anton Grot sets, special Max Factor makeup, and rich use of two-color Technicolor... but it creaks badly and seems much longer than it is.

Cast includes Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Lee Tracy, Preston Foster, John Wray, Harry Beresford and Arthur Edmund Carewe.

SEASON PREMIERE: One of the few new bright spots on broadcast TV last season, Once Upon a Time took its fairy-tale premise, and its Disney imprimatur, and emerged with the best mythic mystery series since Lost. That enchanting season ended with a cliffhanger, as all the residents of Storybrooke were freed from their amnesiac spells, and Mr. Gold – a.k.a. Rumpelstiltskin – enveloped the town with a mysterious purple mist. What will the mist do? Tonight’s Season 2 opener, obviously, is not to be mist.

SCI-FI TALK: Warehouse 13 Finale Q And A

by Tony Tellado
September 25, 2012

The gang from the Warehouse along with their creator chat about this season with us reporters.

... Tony Tellado: What’s it been like for all of you this season? You know, Jack [Kenny] has really put you guys through quite a ringer in all the different angles. And as a personal favorite, I did like the birth of the artifact. That was really a neat thing. But what’s it been like for all of you to kind of go through these journeys this year?

Eddie McClintock: "You know, for me, it all boils down to Jack [Kenny]. I mean, you know, if there’s an award for the hardest working guy in Hollywood, it’s got to go to Jack. I mean, I’ve never – I’ve been doing this long enough that I’ve seen plenty of show runners and I’ve been on plenty of shows. And I’ve never seen someone who has so much input on almost every aspect of the show.I mean, this is – this show is Jack Kenny. And so, you know, to be able to take that ride with Jack – and it just seems this year – it’s always been Jack’s show but this year more than any. I mean, it just has his handprint on it. And it’s just been ..."

Saul Rubinek: "Soul print."

Eddie McClintock: "Soul print, for sure. And so to be able to, you know, be a part of that and for Jack to rely on us to convey his impression of this show has been a great honor, man, and I look forward to doing more shows. It’s really..."

Saul Rubinek: "And here’s the thing about this. You know, and it’s not – other actors are jealous of us. We are – it’s rare. You know, you get a bunch of actors getting together and we talk about our love for Jack. And that’s because he loves us. We’re a family and in this family, it’s not that we don’t have bumps and grinds, that happens. But you know, I watch Jack tell me about an episode, “And there’s this moment in this episode.” I said, “Yes.” And he said, “Let me just show it to you because we’re just in the middle of cutting it.” And I said, “Yes, and we’re on a break.” And he shows me his – on his computer and, you know, I look over at him and he’s completely welled up. You know, I am too. It’s a moving moment. But he wrote it. I mean, you know, and he’s watching us go through our paces and he’s emotionally involved and I have scenes to do where I’m sometimes asked to improvise a bunch of stuff and I’ll say, “Geez, Jack, I’m not really sure where to go,” and he’ll do a version of it. And we collaborate on every aspect and we have directors who know that that’s going to happen. We’re incredibly fortunate. And when Eddie says this show is Jack, it’s true that we’re collaborating with a network and a studio that have allowed Jack and his writers to continue to set the bar higher..."

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill Talks Season Seven

by Steve Eramo
09/29/2012

Having joined Doctor Who in the fifth season, Arthur Darvill's character of Rory Williams became a regular character in season six and is now set to make his departure alongside onscreen wife Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) in The Angels Take Manhattan. Here in this fourth and final BBC America press interview, he shares his favorite moments, monsters and how you can make Karen scream!

"The great thing about Doctor Who is that it always tries to better itself and that has really happened this season," says Darvill fondly. "It feels like a movie! What is fantastic is that the Daleks are actually scary in Asylum of the Daleks. It was quite an odd experience being on set that day, not only because of all of the Daleks, but because there was generally a lot more people on set as they were so excited about what was about to happen.

"Such an amazing title, but to be honest I wasn’t sure how they were going to do it, getting Dinosaurs on a Spaceship! But that episode is made extra special with Mark Williams playing Rory’s dad. He is absolutely hilarious, so lovely and just a funny guy," recalls the actor. With one of the biggest sets ever built to house the prehistoric creatures, Darvill notes, "The dinosaurs were huge. Going on set was like walking in to a massive aircraft carrier..."

... We know Matt Smith is fond of pranks on set, but did Darvill also torment Karen? "During down time on set if there was a lull, a great way to entertain yourself was to tell Karen that a moth was flying around her head. She would literally go mad, flinging her arms around and screaming. It was hilarious! She hates anything with wings!"

"It is such a big family," says Darvill, talking about what he will miss the most about the show. "But Matt, Karen and I still chat every few days and meet up when we can. The great thing about Doctor Who is that you get to work with the best of the best. It has been such a fantastic adventure and I hope everyone enjoys the remainder of the ride..."

COLLIDER: FRINGE Showrunner J.H. Wyman Talks the Show’s Final Season, Character Arcs, Working Within a TV Budget and Giving Fans a Satisfying Conclusion

by Christina Radish
September 28th, 2012

The critically acclaimed and fan-favorite sci-fi drama series Fringe is back for a fifth and final 13-episode season. Promising to deliver a climactic and satisfying conclusion, things will pick up in 2036, when the Observers have become ruthless rulers who will reign supreme. Now, the Fringe team will make a final stand, bringing together all that they have witnessed, in order to battle and protect the world.

During this recent interview to promote the show’s return, showrunner/writer/executive producer J.H. Wyman talked about when they decided to set the final season in the future, where Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia’s (Anna Torv) journey will go and how Walter (John Noble) has changed now, how he’s learned to constrain his ideas with a TV show budget, his reticence in changing the show so dramatically for the final season, what has changed most from the original plan, the major challenges they faced in bringing everything to a satisfying conclusion, whether there was always an intention to make the Observers the bad guys, and what he will take away from his experience on Fringe...

... Collider: You’ve talked a lot about Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv) being a fractured fairytale in Season 5. What can you say about their journey, this season?

J.H. Wyman: "Well, no love story worth telling is easy. The hills and valleys that make a relationship, in my opinion, is really a dynamic worth watching. The harder the tale, the more worthy the pay-off. So, what I can say about this year is that, with everything that’s come in the four years before, I’m really trying to give the characters a specific odyssey this year that are singular odysseys for each character, but also relationship dynamic odysseys. Things are just growing and shifting and shaping, and Peter and Olivia are going to be part of that. Their relationship will shift and grow and evolve, but I think that it’s safe to say that we’ll be there, every step of the way. Everything will be logical. This year, I found great for telling authentic, real emotional stories. I’m treating the 13 episodes as a saga. You’ll get to track their emotional growth pattern and their relationship, very carefully. We really get in underneath the hood and investigate those relationships..."
