NEW YORK POST: Winning team

No one can keep up with the TV king, whose ‘NCIS’ slays the competition

By ROBERT RORKE
October 30, 2011

Mark Harmon, unlike the blowhards who’ve crowed about the ratings they were going to get but didn’t, could boast. He could gloat. But he won’t. For the 60-year-old actor, whose string of successes stretches back 30 years to “St. Elsewhere,” you don’t get to the top -- and stay there -- without collaboration.

I just feel we all do it together. No one’s more important than anyone else,” he says. In its nine seasons “NCIS” has been seen many actors and producers come and go (including creator Donald Bellisario, who departed in 2007 after a disagreement with Harmon on the direction of the show), but he thinks the quality has not been affected. The interplay among the supporting cast, which includes Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and Cote de Pablo, complements the show’s procedural elements...

Photobucket

... “NCIS” will air its 200th episode Jan. 31, and [executive producer Gary] Glasberg will write a special script that “speaks to the history of the show.” Harmon is intrigued but hoping to be surprised.

I like not knowing. I’ve never been one to go up in the office and say what are you doing next?” he says.

THE FUTON CRITIC: Interview: "Castle" Creator Andrew W. Marlowe

10/31/11
By Jim Halterman

Will they or won't they are the first questions that come to mind when thinking about ABC's crime drama "Castle" and the potential relationship between writer Richard Castle (played by Nathan Fillion) and detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). But, as creator/Executive Producer Andrew W. Marlowe told our Jim Halterman last week, he's not fearful of finally taking the leap and having the characters come together. That said, since past television series like 'Moonlighting' have crashed and burned after the leads coupled, would he see that moment as a 'jumping the shark?'

Marlowe may have kept mum during out chat about when that coupling might happen but he did say the twosome may already be in a relationship of sorts. He also made sure to tease what's to come with the various supporting characters and that there will also be plenty of 'shipper' moments in [the latest episode] "Cops & Robbers" episode for those fans who tune in just as much for the romantic banter as the twists and turns in each week's case...

... JH: We saw Beckett in therapy recently trying to confront some of her issues. Will we see more of that in the future?

AWM: "She's going to keep acknowledging those issues as we move forward. One of the things about the show is that for the most part since the beginning we've accessed all the storytelling through Castle's point of view. Beckett has been a mystery to him and he's peeled back her layers as time has gone by but I felt very strongly at the beginning of the season that it was time to start opening her up if not to Castle then a little bit to the audience. I think when she plays coy with him and she has a bit of the Mona Lisa smile or puts up her walls, there's a lot that the audience can read into it. In order to guide the audience in terms of what she's thinking about and what she's struggling with, I felt that having that access into her was going to be very important for them to understand what we were doing with the storytelling this year and why she's not fully committing to him and why she's dealing with these impediments that are getting in the way of having the relationship she wants to. We'll see that a couple more times this season. We have an episode coming up soon where there's a sniper loose in the city on a spree kill and in that she's going to have to confront some post-traumatic stress issues so we'll be using it for that as well..."

Hell on Wheels 2

KANSAS CITY STAR: Anson Mount: Maybe not the best-looking guy in the room, but that's OK

By LUAINE LEE
Oct. 31, 2011

Most actors wouldn't admit it, but for at least one, life was just too easy. Anson Mount was kicking back in Los Angeles, auditioning for roles and soaking in his suntan the natural way.

"It was so easy to just roll out of my bed and go for a jog on the beach and go to an audition and go to the beach, it was a lovely lifestyle. But I wasn't struggling against anything," he says, perched on the corner of a banquette in a cafe here.

With all that ease, something had to change, he says. "I moved back to New York City from Los Angeles a few years ago ... To move back to New York from a place that's so comfortable, that's hard. It was time to get back to where I had a community, and it was time to stop competing for work I was not interested in. I just felt bored," he sighs...

Photobucket

... He may not be the best-looking guy in the room, but he's the man you want to watch in AMC's rollicking Western, "Hell on Wheels," premiering Sunday.

The network that already dished up "Broken Trail" to massive appeal has done it again with this saga about the building of the transcontinental railroad and the tent city (dubbed Hell on Wheels) that accompanied it across the plains.

Mount ("Conviction," "Crossroads") plays a Johnny Reb fueled by revenge for his wife's murder who winds up foreman on the railroad line with all the wrong enemies.

It's a gritty role that suited the man with the steely eyes and trimmed beard. "It's hard for me to do anything unless I put myself into it 150 percent, so it's all or nothing for me," he says.

That doesn't mean he's a perfectionist. "You give it 100 percent then you have to let it go. I wouldn't be sane if I were a perfectionist," he says. "You have to be able to get to the point as a professional to walk into an audition and throw your pages into the trash and go on. Otherwise you'll go nuts..."

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... NCIS

8-9 PM CBS

Consider this episode, "Devil's Triangle," a treat for longtime fans who understand that it's the characters, not the crime fighting, that make this TV's No. 1 drama. We finally meet Diane (guest star Melinda McGraw), the frank-talking ballbuster who married and divorced both Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and senior FBI agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano). When her current husband, a Homeland Security employee, goes missing, she asks her exes to find him. As satisfying as it is to learn the trio's full story — that's the mystery Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Abby (Pauley Perrette) really want to solve this hour — it's more fun to watch Tobias and Harmon's Leroy (she calls him Leroy!) dance around Diane and rib each other. It's their chemistry that turns this into an episode you'll sit through again during NCIS marathons, for sure.
