SANCTUARY - THE MORTON REPORT: Vamping It Up: Interview With Sanctuary's Jonathon Young

By Steve Eramo
October 24, 2011

He is brilliant, egotistical, a connoisseur of fine wine as well as a snazzy dresser and rather long in the tooth, literally - Sanctuary’s Nikola Tesla is all that and much more. Based on the real-life Serbian-American inventor, mechanical and electrical engineer, the character is a member of a secret Victorian-era group called The Five. Tesla and his colleagues - Dr. Helen Magnus, John Druitt, James Watson and Nigel Griffin - injected themselves with pure vampire blood, giving each of them unique abilities.

In Tesla’s case, the blood activated his dormant vampire genes, transforming him into a half-vampire. He eventually left The Five and went underground for 60 years in an attempt to resurrect his vampire ancestors. Introduced in the first season Sanctuary episode “The Five,” Tesla turns up in Rome to warn Helen that her life is in danger. Of course, in typical Tesla fashion, he has an ulterior motive. Over the past four years, actor Jonathon Young has made the Tesla role his own, slipping perfectly into the character’s tasteful wardrobe and lofty manner. Funnily enough, this version of the character was not what he initially expected to be playing...

... “When my character first showed up on the program, he had a plan to essentially recruit Helen,” notes Young. “When, however, she declined his offer to join him in his plans for world domination, Tesla was all set to kill her. I often think back to that first episode because there’s quite a bit of evidence of a really warm friendship with a long history between these two characters, and certainly in comparison to ‘The Five,’ Tesla has become softer in his relationship to Magnus. Yes, he’s always looking out for himself above anyone else, but it’s clear that he cares a great deal for Helen and would do anything to help her. She’s the one person who, I think, knows how to get the human side to come to the surface where Nikola Tesla is concerned..."

TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Walking Dead, Homeland, Terra Nova, Dexter and More!

Oct 24, 2011
by Matt Roush

... Question: My family and I would love to watch Grimm, but NBC put it on opposite Supernatural and Fringe, so our DVR is already taken. Given that those shows cater to the demographic they would like to reach, doesn't it make sense to put it on at a different time? —William

Matt Roush: The scheduling really is puzzling, and feels like further cannibalization of an already smallish pool of genre enthusiasts on what has become TV's cult night. I'm trying to keep an open mind until I see more episodes beyond the pilot, but Grimm seems the least interesting and promising of the three, so that helps take care of the problem at least from my perspective. But I'm expecting NBC will make the show readily available on other platforms (nbc.com, On Demand, etc.) so others in your boat have a chance to at least sample it. But programming it against such similar competition doesn't seem like much of a vote of confidence.

Supernatural

TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Walking Dead, Homeland, Terra Nova, Dexter and More!

Oct 24, 2011
by Matt Roush

... Question: Why does the CW snub Supernatural? Despite seven years on the air, the network barely advertises Supernatural even after the way Supernatural has been received by fans. Over half a million voted for Supernatural's TV Guide Magazine cover and yet CW ignores the show. They depend on word of mouth by fans to get viewers for the show. Maybe they should pay the fans for doing their advertising for them? —Phoenix

Matt Roush: Snub? For a show to last seven seasons on any network should be a cause for fans to rejoice, not to complain. But the big-picture, common-sense answer to this gripe is that especially in the fall, any network's priority is to promote the new series in hopes of creating new hits, with far less attention given to the long-running shows with a loyal fan base that (much like its time-slot competition Fringe) isn't likely to grow substantially in its latter seasons. Supernatural does tend to have to sell itself these days, enhanced by appearances at fan-oriented events like Comic-Con. When I tune into the CW (usually later in the week), I see a fair amount of on-air promotion for the Friday series Nikita and Supernatural. I'm not sure what fans expect, but I am sure it would never be enough.

TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Walking Dead, Homeland, Terra Nova, Dexter and More!

Oct 24, 2011
by Matt Roush

... Question: Terra Nova has all this great medical, weapons and transportation technology from 2149, and the producers have been very careful and thorough in creating the mythology and the science of the settlement. So why is there no air transportation? —Christina

Matt Roush: Here's an answer courtesy of executive producer Rene Echevarria:

"Most of the technology in Terra Nova is sent back through the portal in pieces from 2149 and reassembled on our end. What to send back is a matter of priorities since the portal can only be kept open for a short time. Priority is given to mission-critical supplies such as medicines, weapons for self-defense and, of course, the pilgrims themselves. As for air power, every now and then you'll hear references to "RBs," short for research balloons. These are tethered to the ground at fixed locations outside the compound perimeter, and can provide live security/surveillance footage as well as atmospheric/scientific data."

Once Upon a Time

COLLIDER: Co-Creator/Executive Producer Adam Horowitz Interview

by Christina Radish
October 23rd, 2011

From co-creators/executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (Lost, Tron: Legacy), the imaginative new ABC fantasy drama Once Upon A Time, tells the story of a time when there was an enchanted forest filled with all the classic fairy tale characters that we know. Then one day, the Evil Queen cursed them all to live in the modern world, in a sleepy New England town called Storybrooke, where all of their happy endings were stolen and they had no memory of their former selves. With the epic battle for the future of all worlds about to begin, audiences will get glimpses of darkness and wonder, as the magic of the most beloved fairytales is brought to life.

During a recent interview to promote the series, Adam Horowitz talked about how this idea really started over eight years ago when he and Edward Kitsis were trying to figure out what they love about storytelling, that coming off of Lost made them want to challenge themselves as writers, how they were able to get everyone for the cast that they wanted, how this will be a character show at its heart with mysteries that come out of that, that they feel Snow White is ground zero for fairy tales, and how they’ve put their feature film work aside to focus completely on this show...

... Question: What started this project for you? Where did the idea come from?

ADAM HOROWITZ: "The idea for the show really started over eight years ago, when Eddie [Kitsis] and I had just come off of working on Felicity. The seed of it was that we were trying to figure out what it is about storytelling that we really love, and what we love is the mystery and excitement of exploring lots of different worlds. Fairy tales clicked with us because they were so much in the DNA of what made us storytellers, to begin with. If we can go between two different worlds and see two different sides of these characters, for us, as writers, that was a new way to explore characters and what makes them tick, and come at them from different angles. What you always want, as a writer, is to find different ways to explore the characters, and that’s what got us excited about this idea..."
