TV GUIDE: Matt's Guide to Weekend TV: Premieres of Once Upon a Time, Boss and More!

SUNDAY

... The second of three delightful Case Histories movies on Masterpiece Mystery! (PBS, 9/8c, check local schedules), based on the novel One Good Turn, finds Jason Isaacs' private eye Jackson Brodie getting in over his head when he tries to retrieve a drowning victim from the sea and then starts tracking her identity. Webs don't get much more tangled than in these stories.

TV GUIDE: Matt's Guide to Weekend TV: Premieres of Once Upon a Time, Boss and More!

Oct 21, 2011
by Matt Roush

Once is not enough. Sometimes a second look, or a second episode, is necessary to convince a skeptic that a show is worth taking a risk on. So it is with ABC's dazzling but dauntingly precious Once Upon a Time (Sunday, 8/7c), which back when I was considering it for Fall Preview left me wondering: "Is this ambitiously whimsical fantasia the next Pushing Daisies cult fave or the next Eastwick insta-flop? (Either way, it will likely be an uphill climb to happily ever after.) It would be easier to love if it weren't so convoluted and campy."

Snow White

But then ABC made another episode (the third, airing Nov. 6) available for review, and I started to find myself enchanted and beguiled, ready to curl up with more chapters of this fractured fairy tale. First, though, you have to digest the premise, and the overstuffed and often overripe pilot is a lot to swallow.

Photobucket

We begin in a lavishly rendered fairy-tale land where Snow White (Big Love's Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming wrangle with an Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), who interrupts their wedding with the promise of a curse. Said curse arrives just as Snow manages to send her newborn daughter Emma through a magical portal into our world. Years pass, and the grown Emma (House's arch Jennifer Morrison), now a loner of a bounty hunter, is enlisted by a little boy to hasten to the isolated burg of Storybrooke, Maine, where time is frozen and all our favorite characters of legend live in ignorance of their fabled origins. The boy believes Emma can reverse the curse, but first she has to face the town mayor (Parrilla again), who's given to saying things like, "I will destroy you if it is the last thing I do." (Has she been watching Revenge? Do they even have TVs in Storybrooke?)

Photobucket

"Seriously?" Emma remarks with some frequency, which is understandable. I was initially underwhelmed by all the heavy-handed whimsy, but I began to take Once a bit more seriously upon sampling the upcoming third episode. It cleverly weaves Lost-like flashbacks — the show's creators are Lost vets, and it shows — taking us back to Snow's colorful past as a frisky bandit, played off against her modern-day search for the John Doe she doesn't know is her Prince Charming (and their meet-cute back in the enchanted woods truly is charming). There's gorgeous fun to be had here, and I'm cautiously optimistic that ABC's patience in delaying the premiere until a month into the season, coupled with heavy and smart promotion, will pay off, at least initially. It would be a shame for this book to be closed too soon...

REUTERS NEWS: Jennifer Morrison puts new twist on TV fairy tale

By Jill Jacobs
Thu Oct 20, 2011

Actress Jennifer Morrison, best known for her portrayal of Dr. Allison Cameron on "House M.D.," returns to television this Sunday, putting a new twist on the idea of a fairy tale life in "Once Upon a Time."

Set in the small New England town of "Storybrooke," the drama alternates between a land of make-believe, full of princes and evil queens, to a parallel world in modern-day Maine, where townspeople remain unaware they are part of a fantasy world.

Morrison portrays Emma, an abused foster child who is the abandoned daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Reuters spoke to her about the new series...

Photobucket

... Q: Your new show is from the writers of sci-fi fantasy "Lost." Are there similarities between the shows?

Jennifer Morrison: "It's not so much that it's similar, but I do feel like they've taken some elements of the structure of "Lost" and used that to serve the storytelling in "Once Upon A Time," kind of similar to the way the viewer gets to know the character in "Lost" through flashbacks. Everyone is in reality and existing in reality and the flashback element flashes to fairy tale land when these people were actually the characters who we are suggesting that they are..."

CALGARY HERALD: Robert Carlyle finds golden opportunity in Once Upon a Time

By Alex Strachan
October 20, 2011

Robert Carlyle bared his soul in Trainspotting, bared his soul and then some in The Full Monty, and even played Adolf Hitler once, in the 2003 miniseries Hitler: The Rise of Evil. He has appeared in films as disparate as Angela's Ashes, 28 Days Later and the James Bond thriller, The World Is Not Enough.

Playing cryptic, mysterious characters comes as naturally to him as a chameleon blending into a field of tall grass. Carlyle is an instinctual actor, and when he first saw the script for Once Upon a Time, the new, filmed-in-Vancouver fairy-tale series that debuts Sunday, he was struck by its mysticism and the moral ambivalence of his dual character, Rumpelstiltskin and Mr. Gold.

Once Upon a Time shifts back and forth in time, from a mystical fairy-tale world in which Rumpelstiltskin is a key character, to the modern-day version, where Mr. Gold is just one more enigmatic eccentric in a town of eccentrics...

Photobucket

... "I don't see the characters I play as being necessarily that complicated," Carlyle said, in a soft-spoken Glasgow lilt. "I suppose it's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. . . . My job is to piece it all together.

"Most actors would say the same thing, I think. These are the more interesting parts to play, when you're playing someone whom the plots kind of bounce off. It's not quite as exciting, somehow, when you're playing the person who's pushing the plot through. To be honest, I think people are always asking me to do these parts, because they think I can do that, and do it well..."

With NBC's Grimm, the ABC series Once Upon A Time makes two new fairy tale-based shows premiering on network television within a week. That, plus a movie release schedule peppered with fairy tale remakes, raises a question: What's put them in the zeitgeist?

Maybe it's because of Harry Potter and Twilight. The studios behind those franchises have made piles of money. But just think about how much they'd have to pay Stephanie Meyer for a Twilight TV series. Fairy tales have the advantage of being free.

"Todd had an idea about six years ago," said Grimm co-creator David Greenwalt, appearing on a panel with collaborator Todd Milliner at ComicCon in San Diego last summer. "And his idea was, 'What can we do that's in public domain?'"

NEVERLAND - STARRY CONSTELLATION MAGAZINE: Anna Friel, Rhys Ifans and Charlie Rowe Interview

by: Jamie Steinberg
October 2011

... Q) What was it like to be part of such a classic story? Was it daunting for you guys, or how did it feel to be involved in something like that?

Rhys Ifans: "It wasn't daunting. I mean, what's daunting is, I guess, that we -- that everyone knows the story of Peter Pan. And what was appealing, I guess, for all three of us is that this goes a long way, if not all the way, to explain how Peter Pan becomes Peter Pan, how he acquires these magical powers and how Captain Hook loses his hand."

Anna Friel: "I have a six-year-old daughter. She just went, "Mommy, there's no way you can't not do 'Neverland.'" She was very excited. She wasn't too happy about the idea that I might potentially kill Peter Pan. She thought that was stupid, but she was very excited about it."

Charlie Rowe: "Yeah. No. I was pretty apprehensive because I, like, have quite big boots to fill. It was great fun, a completely different story to the original story. I think we did it justice..."

Neverland is two-part four hour mini-series, premieres Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 9/8C on Syfy.

USA TODAY: Ginnifer Goodwin's life takes a fairy-tale turn

Ginnifer Goodwin has gone from polygamist to princess.

By Cindy Clark
October 20, 2011

Snow White, to be exact. And it just so happens to be her favorite of the bunch.

"It is, and ironically, I was Snow White two years ago for Halloween," she says, calling from a Burger King at Los Angeles International Airport. "I remember saying to my little sister when I explained my (costume) choice: 'You know, one of my biggest dreams in life is to play a Disney princess. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I always go all-out with my costumes. I'd better go ahead and dress up like a Disney princess now, because if I ever land a princess role, I wouldn't be able to do that then..."

Photobucket

... It's a good thing she did when she had the chance, because the former star of HBO's Big Love can now be seen as Snow White on ABC's Once Upon a Time (Sundays, 8 p.m. ET/PT).

But it almost wasn't to be. After her "perfect" experience as Margie on seven seasons of the polygamous family drama, Goodwin, 33, says she "wasn't planning on going back to television at all. … I wanted to take a break from the world of televion and explore a film career."

She wanted the "luxury of time," something a television shooting schedule did not afford. But after reading "every film script I could get my hands on," the actress, who has starred in movies including He's Just Not That Into You and Mona Lisa Smile, was left more than a little dismayed.

"Let's be honest: Those offers are going to Amy Adams and Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan," she says. "I do understand my place in this business. These are the girls getting offers on the scripts that I would want to be part of..."

COLLIDER: Simon Baker Talks MARGIN CALL, Occupy Wall Street, THE MENTALIST, and His Thoughts on DOCTOR STRANGE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub
October 20th, 2011

Opening this weekend, in limited release, is writer/director J.C. Chandor’s Margin Call. Starring Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley and Simon Baker, Margin Call is a very smart economic thriller that revolves around the key people at an investment bank during the 24-hour period before the 2008 financial crisis. As the film unfolds, we learn who knew what and when, and what lines people are willing to cross to stay ahead. While Hollywood often glamorizes or exaggerates real events, Margin Call makes you feel like a fly on the wall and it never feels forced. Definitely recommended. For more on the film, watch the trailer here.

A few days ago I did a phone interview with Simon Baker. During our extended conversation, Baker talked about making Margin Call, his thoughts on Occupy Wall Street, and what’s coming up on his very popular CBS show The Mentalist. In addition, he talked about his favorite actors and his favorite films, if more people know him from The Mentalist or The Devil Wears Prada, and I asked him his thoughts on comic book movies as I’ve seen some online folks saying he’d be a good Doctor Strange.

A brief excerpt:

... Q: I want to ask you about pranks on set. Have you ever been a part of a great prank or have you ever had a great prank played on you?

Baker: "Robin Tunney has done it a couple of times when we have guest actresses. She always tells them to say, “My grandmother loves the show. I need to get a photo of you for my grandmother.” It’s just a gag that she does for some reason. We have a really cute girl working on the show and she comes in to the guest actor and always says, “Can I take a photo of you for my grandmother?” I always say, “It’s always the grandmother…” but I didn’t realize that Robin would put them up to it. But pranks I don’t really have that much time for. There is enough stuff that happens by accident that I don’t need to actually put the effort into making things happen..."

The Mentalist airs Thursday at 10/9C on CBS.

Margin Call opens in theaters Friday, October 21, 2011. Cast includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci.

NEW YORK MAGAZINE: George R.R. Martin on His Favorite Game of Thrones Actors, and the Butterfly Effect of TV Adaptations

By: Adam Pasick
10/20/11

If George R.R. Martin thought he had a rabid fan base before, when each book in his best-selling fantasy series "A Song of Ice and Fire" was devoured by impatient readers, the success of the HBO adaptation Game of Thrones has raised the stakes considerably. We talked with Martin as he settled in after a long PR tour and got back to work on the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter...

... Q: Which actors have taken the characters and brought something new and surprising to the mix, adding layers that weren't necessarily there when you created them?

George R. R. Martin: "I think we have in general a spectacular cast; our casting directors did an amazing job. Certainly Peter Dinklage did an amazing job with Tyrion, who is one of my favorite character in the books. We didn't even audition Peter. We always talked about him for the role. The same was true for Sean Bean — although we did audition a few people for the role — but we always wanted Sean and he was incredible in that role.

Another group that deserves special mention was the kids — it's very difficult to cast a kid. Our kids had to carry a very serious dramatic weight — we needed really good young actors. We got three terrific ones...
