BBC America horror series about an insane asylum takes its time

By Tom Conroy
Oct 6, 2011

In one of those TV programming coincidences that occur more frequently than one might imagine, two cable channels have just premiered supernatural dramas about hard-to-unload real estate: FX’s “American Horror Story” and BBC America’s “Bedlam.”

It’s an open question which building would be less appealing: the former show’s mansion, in which the previous owners died in a murder-suicide, or the latter’s apartment house, a converted insane asylum called Bedlam Heights, which comes complete with a graveyard on the grounds. But in terms of entertainment and chills, the American show beats the British.

Airing on Saturdays at 9 p.m., “Bedlam” rather predictably lets us know early on that something creepy happened in the mental hospital before the renovations began, and also rather predictably, it doles out the clues slowly. Even at the end of the six episodes that the channel made available for review, we’re not sure why so many deceased patients continue to haunt the place.

The episodes settle into a pattern in which a tenant has frightening visitations from a troubled spirit and then the complex’s resident ghost whisperer, Jed (Theo James), helps the spirit find closure and stop bothering the living. This template has been worn out on American TV...

Bedlam airs Saturdays at 9/8C on BBC America.

SANCTUARY - DESERET NEWS: 'Sanctuary,' starring Amanda Tapping, goes rogue in Season 4

By Mark Rappleye
Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011

Season 4 of "Sanctuary" promises to be the season when the sanctuary goes rogue, no longer taking direction from national governments or whatever organizations of sanctuaries might exist.

Sanctuary” stars Amanda Tapping from Syfy’s “Stargate” saga. Tapping plays the century-old Helen Magnus, who runs a facility designated for catching and protecting people or other beings with strange origins or strange characteristics. They are referred to as "abnormals..."

Helen Magnus from 'Tempus'

... In the season premiere, Magnus has been transported back in time along with an old nemesis who wishes to change events of the past. Magnus must stop him before he destroys the future they just came from.

She finds herself over 100 years in the past when she was still working on the project that would result in her extended lifespan. With the help of an old ally, Magnus attempts to hunt down the villain who brought her through time while maintaining a minimum amount of interference on the past and, of course, avoid running into herself.

She must also discover a way to get back to the 21st century once her task is done. The solution might come as a surprise...

SOUTH COAST TODAY: 'Sanctuary' returns to Victorian roots

By Kevin McDonough
October 06, 2011

Sanctuary” (Friday, October 7, 10 p.m., Syfy) returns for its fourth season with a trip back in time. And along the way, we revisit some comforting constants of the sci-fi genre as well as familiar faces and oft-told tales.

The ageless Magnus (Amanda Tapping) returns to her old stomping grounds – the late Victorian era – in pursuit of rogue genius Adam Worth (Ian Tracey), who revisits the past with advanced medicine to cure the daughter he lost more than a century before. As Magnus and even the most casual buff already know, this is a highly dangerous move. Any change in the past has the potential to alter events, often with catastrophic results. And what trip to Victorian London is complete without a subplot involving Jack the Ripper? I've never been much of a fan of this popular Canadian series, but tonight's season opener of “Sanctuary” is better than most...

In a variation on a blind date, Raj (Kunal Nayyar) is set up with a deaf girl (Katie Leclerc); Howard (Simon Helberg) is their sign-language interpreter. It's a measure of how far Bang has extended beyond Jim Parsons' Sheldon and Johnny Galecki's Leonard that they're no longer the center of this universe. Case in point: In this half hour, Raj's laughable lust and puny anguish are made to carry most of the episode. But unfortunately, they can't; Raj remains a one-dimensional whiner. Fortunately, Parsons proves why he won another Emmy with a clever subplot about rolling dice to let chance make all his decisions for him, including what to eat.

TERRA NOVA - CONCORD MONITOR: Getting to Terra Nova

Actress Allison Miller has worked her way to a starring role in Spielberg-produced show

By Sarah M. Earle
October 6, 2011

The last time Concord Monitor Publisher John Winn Miller saw his daughter, she was fighting off flesh-eating pterosaurs just days after returning from a face-off with an equally deadly variety of prehistoric beast in the middle of the jungle.

He can't wait to see what kind of trouble she'll get herself into next.

Allison Miller plays Skye, the feisty, free-spirited teenager who takes a group of friends exploring beyond the boundaries of civilization on the new Fox TV show Terra Nova. The blue-eyed beauty, whose past credits range from a murder victim on the TV show Cold Case to Zac Efron's high school girlfriend in the movie 17 Again, surely has plenty of fans. But you'd have a hard time finding a more devoted Terra Nova viewer than her dad...
