STARGATE ATLANTIS / EUREKA - GATEWORLD: Kavan Smith Interview

by Chad Colvin
September 22, 2011

Here at GateWorld, every once in awhile we get lucky enough to touch base with the cast members and crew of the different Stargate series more than once in a short period of time. It doesn’t happen often, though, as our deadlines and lives outside the site (and their acting and production careers) very often interfere. For every actor we get the chance to talk with frequently, there are many others that we just don’t get the chance to touch base with very often — regardless of how hard either side tries. So when the opportunity arises, we seize it. Such was the case this year with Stargate Atlantis‘ “Major Lorne” — Kavan Smith.

We caught up with the actor twice this year, at both the Vancouver and Chicago stops of the Creation Entertainment Official Stargate Convention tour — with the latter chat occurring mere days after the announcement of the cancellation of his current television series, Eureka. In our extensive chat, Kavan Smith discusses the cancellations of both beloved genre shows, muses about his latest TV-movie roles, talks about why Felicia Day just might be the most talented genre actress on the planet currently, and more...

... GateWorld: Eureka, a couple of weeks ago, was canceled in what I essentially believe was its prime. Ratings are definitely not a reason for it to be disappearing. There’s been talk about whether it’s a Comcast [majority shareholder of NBC/Universal and Syfy's parent company] decision, ultimately. How did the cast react when the news broke? I know initially, they were looking at an abbreviated six-episode season to finish things off. What was the mood on the set?

Kavan Smith: "Well, what I got from everybody was a mix of surprise and some disappointment from a few people. I think the vast majority of people on the show are quite professional and regardless of why or what happened, I think that five years on a television series is a pretty good run nowadays. It doesn’t happen very often. So I think, for the most part, people were okay.

I think what had a couple of people irked was just the way it happened. By saying, “Okay, well we’re not doing a 13 [episode run], we’re not picking you up for another full season, but we are going to do an abbreviated season of six.” I think, in all honesty, everybody reacted really positively to that. I think that idea of doing another full season — some people were ready to move on to other things — so the idea of just doing six more really appealed to everybody across the board.

So when the bottom dropped out the next day and the six episode order was pulled, there was a lot of speculation. They sent some network execs up and we were talking about things like the market and how that affected the dollar and Comcast and what their bottom line would be. I mean, it’s a business. It’s the reality of it, unfortunately. But it’s a business that involves fans and that’s the kicker. The two don’t always see eye-to-eye on things...

FRINGE - AOL TV: 'Fringe' Star Lance Reddick Teases Season 4, Saving Peter & Balancing the Two Universes

by Maggie Furlong
Sep 23rd 2011

'Fringe' has become known for tangling and twisting things all season long, then still managing to shock us all with huge cliffhanger endings, but last season's finale was the most awesomely insane WTF episode yet.

In Season 4 (premieres Fri., Sept. 23, 9PM ET on Fox), our universes are dealing with the vanishing and complete eradication of Peter Bishop. How soon will they start to remember him? Can they save Peter? And how much longer will fans have to wait to see more Josh Jackson?

I caught up with star Lance Reddick to find out how things have changed for Broyles in this new Peter-less world, and to try to decipher if, in this new reality, Alt-Broyles might still be alive.

He also teased this season's big arc, the shift in Broyles' relationship with his team, the "overlapping" of the universes and who, exactly, is in charge of Fringe Division...

Photobucket

... Q: For Broyles specifically, I feel like Peter changed him over time. His relationship with Peter made him a different boss, a more thoughtful person. How is Broyles different now that Peter never existed?

Lance Reddick: "That's interesting. I don't feel like it's so much Broyles' relationship with Peter that changed him -- it's more that Broyles' relationship with Olivia and Walter changed him. But Broyles' relationship with Olivia and Walter changed him because of their relationship with Peter. So Peter not being there really has changed the whole ... there's this kind of ... I believe it was Season 2 when Peter and Olivia were trapped in a building that had the organism causing that infection ['What Lies Below,' Season 2, Episode 13], and we found out that Olivia was immune, so she was able to come out and go back in. There's a line that Broyles has when the head of the CDC comes out -- Broyles says to him, "Please give me 10 more minutes because there are people in there that are like family to me." I feel like with Peter gone, that's not quite the case with Broyles anymore. They're still his people, but they're more trusted employees than family..."

BLUE BLOODS - STARRY CONSTELLATION MAGAZINE: Will Estes Interview

by: Jamie Steinberg

... Q) What is new this season on "Blue Bloods" and with your character Jamie Reagan?

Will Estes: "Tom Selleck is coming back as the Commissioner and there is a new Mayor. The Commissioner, as you may know, serves at the pleasure of the Mayor. So, there is always an interesting political dance that goes on between the Commissioner and the Mayor of a city. I think that will be an interesting dynamic there and work for Tom Selleck's character. As for my character, he gets to do a bit of basic undercover work - some plain clothes work as they call it. There is a bar that has been suspected of serving alcohol to minors so we're sent to observe and report on any drug activity on the premises as well. I end up befriending a guy that night who gets in a little bit of trouble and I end up helping him out of it. It turns out, he has organized crime connections. So, my character is in a real prime position to try to get closer to a family through the guy with the organized crime connection. It looks like they'll be a little bit of undercover work this year for my character and I am excited about that..."

MORLOCKS - BLASTR: Why David Hewlett and Robert Picardo can't stop laughing

By Kathie Huddleston
Sep 23, 2011

Listening to actors David Hewlett and Robert Picardo talk about their new movie, Morlocks, you might think it's a comedy. It's not. It is, however, Syfy's newest original Saturday night sci-fi movie, which premieres tomorrow at 9 p.m.

As for the irrepressible Stargate stars, they promoted their new film by chattering on and cracking jokes like a well-oiled comedy team, discussing Morlocks, evil chickens, working in Bulgaria and what might happen if they got married to each other.

"I would say, very, very, very, very loosely are we associated with the original Time Machine," said Hewlett.

"And I would say it would be easier for H.G. Wells to recognize a television than recognize his own story here," said Picardo...

FRINGE - COLLIDER: Executive Producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman Interview FRINGE Season 4

by Christina Radish
September 23rd, 2011

The sci-fi drama Fringe returns for Season 4 tonight, with Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) wiped from existence, after having saved the day in the last season finale. The two worlds are now forced to work together, as Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) joins Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) on the Fringe team under Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick). With unbelievable new cases and a growing mythology, the fourth season of the popular series promises more shocks and twists that its loyal followers have come to expect from the show’s adventurous, thought-provoking storytelling.

During a recent interview to promote the show’s return, executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman talked about how important Peter Bishop is to the show and that Joshua Jackson will return in some capacity, the significance of the change in the opening title sequence, the challenge of incorporating both worlds into some of the stories this season, how grateful they are to have such a rabid following, and how things start fresh this season, making it the perfect time for new viewers to dive in...

... Q: The fans within geek culture have really rallied behind the show. Is there a particular element that you think really provokes such a rabid following, among fans at Comic-Con and the like?

PINKNER: "I think they’re just fans of adventurous storytelling, and they are willing to jump onboard a story and really follow it. Not surprisingly, the truth is that they’re treated as this outsider element of fandom, when the truth is that they’re wildly passionate about the stories they like. What separates them is their willingness to really invest and make stories an important part of their lives. We have always said that one of the things that appeals to us about this show is our ability to go deep, both with our characters and with our themes. As we’ve said often, the best form of both ongoing television and scientific fiction is when it really speaks about characters and the human condition and what it means to be alive, at this moment in history. These are certainly things that we try to touch on, and hopefully are things that people are appreciating. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people that do like licorice tend to really, really like licorice, and we’re happy to be making licorice."

WYMAN: "Some people just get turned off just by the term “science fiction,” and they’re not really willing to invest, which is peculiar to Jeff and I because all the movies that are so successful right now, like Inception and Avatar, are science fiction. In the cinema, people are willing to say, “Yes, sign me up. I want to go.” But, on television, there’s still a negative connotation to a lot of viewers. Our fans are willing to embrace this form of storytelling and science fiction. They are people that are willing to really go out on a limb with us and check out some really far-out ideas. That’s the difference. They’re willing to just invest 150% because they’re in with the entire genre..."

SATURDAY

... Syfy's campier franchise, the classically cheesy Saturday night monster movie, pays homage to H.G. Wells' The Time Machine in Morlocks (9/8c), starring Stargate veteran David Hewlitt [sic] and Star Trek: Voyager alum Robert Picardo. The title creatures are futuristic humanoids discovered by time travelers. Things get ugly when the Morlocks figure out how to transport themselves back to the present.

FRIDAY

... A Returning Favorite: Where the unholy heck is Peter Bishop? That question haunts the fourth-season opener of Fox's fabulously bizarre Fringe (9/8c), as Observers lurk on the, yes, fringe of the action while the Fringe team — aided by this world's version of Agent Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel) — tracks down a "freaky see-through killer." The freak-of-the-week case is just a pretext for our heroes to work through issues of loss they're not even aware they're dealing with. As Walter notes, "I don't think there's anything sadder than when two people are meant to be together and something intervenes."
