HAVEN - TV.COM: Q&A with Haven's Eric Balfour and Emily Rose

By Louis Peitzman
August 5, 2011

SyFy’s Haven has done some serious growing up lately. Now in its second season, the Stephen King-inspired series continues to expand on its mythology and overarching mysteries. We caught up with series stars Emily Rose (Audrey Parker) and Eric Balfour (Duke Crocker), who both offered in-depth insight into the show, their characters, and what's to come in Season 2...

Photobucket

... Q: What first attracted you to the character of Duke? Especially in the beginning, when he was a little more of a... jerk.

Eric Balfour: "It was fun. Bottom line, he was a fun guy. He was this sort of swashbuckling modern-day pirate, and he got to say whatever he felt like and do whatever he felt like. And he was a bit of an antagonist, and I love characters like that. Not that I’m comparing in any way, shape, or form, because he’s way better than me, but you think about Jeremy Piven on Entourage. What’s great about Ari Gold is that he’s kind of a dick. But when he has moments of sincerity, you really embrace them, because you almost don’t expect them. And that’s what’s fun about this guy. He doesn’t want to do the right thing. He doesn’t want to help these people with these troubles and all this stuff, but at the end of the day, he sort of can’t help his own good nature, a little bit, as hard as he fights against it. So it’s fun..."

... Q: What can you tell me about the two Audreys?

Emily Rose: "I think the really great thing about playing this kind of storyline was—a lot of times, as an actor, and I’ve said this in other interviews, you have this history, this base you work off of. This is my character, this is what I know about my character. And then when the rug gets sort of pulled out from underneath you, you have this whole world of questions, and that’s what you play.

What was interesting playing across from Kathleen Munroe—she’s fantastic, that one. She’s an award-winning Canadian actress. The Audrey that she portrayed when she came in, when I looked at her, I was like, “Oh, my gosh. This is who Audrey was in the first couple of episodes.” When I looked at her, she goes on the logic side of things, and this is by-the-book, and this is procedure, and this is the FBI, and I can solve this. I hadn’t really noticed what an arc Audrey had made, what a journey she had made, until I saw the old Audrey standing right in front of me. When she was like, “What about this?” and asking some of the same questions I did, and me being able to be like, “Yes, I know where you’re coming from. I understand.” There was this real sort of reality to what we were playing. I was able to say, 'I share your memories. I share your experience of this character...

HAVEN - OLOGY: Lucas Bryant Interview

August 5, 2011
By: Josh Harrison

As your main Haven recapper, I'm always looking to further my investigation into New England's most Troubled little town--so when I got the chance to speak with Lucas Bryant, who plays new police chief Nathan Wuornos on the Syfy Original Series, I went straight up Brothers Teagues and made with the reporting. The turnaround on this has been ridiculously fast because I managed to get Lucas to spill about tonight's guest stars, Jason Priestley and pro wrestler The Edge, and I want to make sure we all get a chance to talk about the new info! So without any further ado, here's my interview with Haven's Lucas Bryant. He's not really all stoic and stone-faced in real life!

Photobucket

... Q: It seems like the last few episodes have been hinting toward some new power players in Haven. Of course we still have the Rev. out there, and Ian Haskell from last time might not be working alone. Are there any big bads or twists like that coming up?

Lucas Bryant: "Well, I think sort of drawing of the lines of Haven is starting now and continues much more with the Rev. and his followers trying to force people to pick sides. That's something big for the rest of the season. And then Nathan realizes he has to pick a side and if he's going to do it, and if we're forcing sides, there are people he didn't know about that are on his. I think episode 7 is pretty dope; there's a really neat storyline that comes in there and some of the Rev.'s history is revealed about why he is the way he is. And Nathan gains some allies, if you will..."

STARGATE ATLANTIS - GATEWORLD: 'Seizing Destiny' - David Hewlett Interview

Thursday - August 4, 2011
by Chad Colvin

It’s now been over two full years since the final episode of Stargate Atlantis graced our television screens, and for actor David Hewlett, parting truly was sweet sorrow. But while many members of the Atlantis cast ended their Stargate time with “Enemy at the Gate” as their characters’ swan song, Hewlett (along with fellow Atlantis actor Robert Picardo) got the chance to reprise the character one more time, earlier this spring on Stargate Universe.

Hewlett took a few minutes to talk exclusively with GateWorld just after the airing of his SGU installment, when the actor was a guest at Creation Entertainment’s Official Stargate Convention in Vancouver. Over the course of the conversation, Hewlett discusses his time on Destiny, a world without Stargate in production, new signs of life with his Starcrossed project, and his pride over his role in this summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes — opening in theaters tomorrow! (Watch a scene with David now.)

Also be on the lookout for David in The Whistleblower, which also sees a limited release in the U.S. on Friday...

Photobucket

... GW: On a more personal note, where are things sitting on Starcrossed?

DH: "Starcrossed? I’m actually in the process now of writing another version of it. We basically did the rounds to figure out how to finance it best. My lovely friends at Syfy have been very cool about it because basically, without their blessing we can’t — you know, it’s theirs. They’ve been fantastic about letting me sell them on some other ideas and some approaches to it. So basically, in my mind — and maybe I’m just a silly, deluded fool — in my mind, we are plowing ahead and we will be shooting.

I just have to get a script now, because originally it was going to be a half-hour [series], then it was going to be webisodes, and then recently when it was sort of reborn again, it became a Web series again. What I love about Web series now is that there’s no longer — while there is a stigma, I suppose, attached to them, there’s doesn’t need to be. The reality is my son watches television on television, he watches television on the iPod, on the iPad, on the computer. It makes no difference to him how you get the content. It’s no longer just one-minute webisodes...

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Lauren Ambrose Stays Mum on Funny Girl, But Compares Herself to Carrot Top and Talks Torchwood

8/5/11
By: Gwynne Watkins

Though she's worked steadily since the end of Six Feet Under — a half-dozen indie films, two acclaimed Broadway shows, one failed network sitcom — Lauren Ambrose is still best remembered as HBO's soul-searching teen Claire Fisher. Now 33, the redhead is redefining herself in some unexpected ways. Currently, she's playing Torchwood: Miracle Day's amoral publicist Jilly Kitzinger, as seductive a villainesss as has ever wore designer heels. She has a supporting role in the upcoming David Wain comedy Wanderlust. And it was just announced that she'll be taking her little-heard, classically trained singing voice to Broadway, as Fanny Brice in the fall revival of Funny Girl. Though she declined to discuss the latter when we pressed her about the rumor (it was still under wraps when we interviewed her late last week), Ambrose talked to Vulture about her first foray into sci-fi, her obsession with Welsh accents, and why doing Wanderlust made her feel like the hippie Carrot Top...

Photobucket

... Q: So what made you choose this project, if you hadn't seen the show?

Lauren Ambrose: "I spoke to [creator and producer] Russell Davies about it, and I just enjoyed speaking to him so thoroughly. He's so smart and Welsh and talked in his very fast tongue — absolutely a million words a minute — about this world he created. And what was most appealing was that there is truly a reason for everything. Every detail has been considered. Obviously, there's this unnatural phenomenon where people stop dying all over the world, and he explores the repercussions of an event like that. My character represents the people who would sell it and profit off of it. She's in publicity; it's kind of been a meta, weird trip, to do interviews about the character, knowing that some publicist somewhere set it up..." [Laughs.]
