DOCTOR WHO - SFX MAGAZINE: Matt Smith Interview

The Eleventh Doctor chats with SFX’s Joseph McCabe at Comic-Con International 2011 in San Diego...

by Dave Golder
August 1 2011

... SFX: It seems that in Steven Moffat’s version of Doctor Who, the Doctor is gaining a family. Especially with the last episode broadcast...

Matt Smith: “What’s interesting about the Doctor is he’s always sort of an outsider in many ways. Because one day Amy Pond and Rory will go back and live on their own, and he’ll be left alone again. And some other poor sap will be picked up and whisked into it. I hope that day doesn’t come for a while, because I love working with Karen and Arthur, and Amy Pond is very close to my heart… I guess he’s quite lucky because he has River. She’s sort of family. But the Doctor’s a loner I think, essentially. I think he loves the idea of being part of a family, but can never quite understand how to be...

DOCTOR WHO - COLLIDER: Matt Smith and Karen Gillan Interview

by Christina Radish
August 2nd, 2011

After a very impressive and shocking first half of the season, that left viewers waiting on the edge of their seats to find out how one of the most exciting cliff-hangers and plot twists ever would resolve, Doctor Who returns to BBC America on August 27th. Although they were very tight-lipped about any plot points, co-stars Matt Smith (who plays the Doctor himself) and Karen Gillan (who plays the Doctor’s companion, Amy) talked at the BBC America portion of the TCA Press Tour about how their lives have changed since becoming a part of the show, how they both enjoy taking unexpected risks with their characters, what they were most nervous about and what they have the most fun with when it comes to taking on such iconic roles, who their favorite actors are in Doctor Who seasons past, and they promised more twists and turns, as the dynamic changes after the big revelation in the last episode...

Photobucket

... Q: In the second half of this season, everything changes and all bets are off, with relationships and dynamics changing, now that viewers know who River is. Did you guys enjoy the second half of this season, and all the twists and turns that it brought?

GILLAN: "Absolutely! It’s going to take some twists and turns, and all relationships and the whole dynamic is going to change, after the big revelation at the end of the last half of the series. I had some fun with Alex Kingston, with that."

SMITH: "There’s the great revelation that’s probably the biggest of the series. We’ve still got to understand just what happened to the Doctor in Episode 1. I think “Let’s Kill Hitler” is maybe my favorite episode to date. It just rockets along. Steven [Moffatt] has always delivered the payoff to all these revelations, in a way that is exactly what you would want it to be. It doesn’t disappoint..."

ALPHAS - THE WASHINGTON TIMES: He's not autistic, but he plays one on TV: Ryan Cartwright on Syfy's Alphas

by Jean Winegardner
Tuesday, August 2, 2011

About halfway through the second episode of Syfy's new series "Alphas," Dr. Lee Rosen, played by David Strathairn, says, "[His] ability is an integral part of him, as is the color of a person's skin or you being left handed. You can't extract that."

Rosen is referring to a character with special neurological abilities and is basically talking about neurodiversity, but taken to the nth power.

"Alphas" is a science fiction series focused on exploring people whose neurological anomalies give them special powers—super strength or the ability to hyper-intensify one sense at a time, for example—at the same time that they deal with the deficits and difficulties brought on by their differences. These people are the titular Alphas.

It is fitting then, that one of the show's five main Alphas is Gary Bell, an autistic adult who can read a wide range of electromagnetic frequencies, including television, radio and cell phone signals. The inclusion of an autistic character brings an interesting layer of neurodiverse reality to a show almost entirely made of fantasy...

Photobucket

... Gary, as played by actor Ryan Cartwright, is described on the show as a "high functioning autistic." Cartwright sees him as more complex than just his diagnosis and says, "I like that he has a voice, an attitude and a developing sense of humor. He's an innocent in certain ways, which makes him endearing, but he's also finding himself in a position of great appreciation and admiration for the first time in his life, so he's strutting a little."

Naturally, the autism community carefully watches portrayals of autistic characters on television, something the show's creators seem to be aware of. "Everyone involved in the show is taking great pains to be sensitive to the autistic community," says Cartwright...
