ZEN - MASTERPIECE MYSTERY - TV GUIDE: Roush Review: Weekend Picks Sunday, July 17, 2011

Jul 15, 2011
by Matt Roush

... Here are some more highlights of another busy summer weekend:

Zen (Sunday, 9/8c, PBS; check local tvguide.com listings)

Zen isn't a state of mind. In the corrupt though undeniably stylish whirl of Rome, detective Aurelio Zen (a droll, suave Rufus Sewell) may be the last hope for truth. In this clever series of politically and sexually charged Masterpiece Mystery! movies based on books by Michael Dibdin, and beautifully filmed on location, lone wolf Zen finds his reputation for integrity challenged on all sides. Pressured by government justice officials to work sensitive cases, often at cross-purposes with his own cantankerous police boss, Zen walks a precarious tightrope. Thankfully, he finds romantic refuge with an alluring new office worker (Caterina Murino, whose authentic Italian dialect makes all the British accents around her all the more jarring). But even that affair must be kept secret. Zen is seductive fun.

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - TV Guide: Roush Review: Weekend Picks Friday, July 15, 2011

Jul 15, 2011
by Matt Roush

... Here are some more highlights of another busy summer weekend:

Torchwood: Miracle Day (Friday, 10/9c, Starz)

I was away when this provocative sci-fi thriller premiered last week, so here are a few excerpts from my magazine review:

While HBO's hit True Blood feeds our fascination with the undead, the 10-part Torchwood: Miracle Day is all about the undying, or "the death of death." It's an audacious sci-fi premise: What happens when people everywhere suddenly stop dying, even when their time is up? A miracle to be sure, but the economic, ecological and medical implications are catastrophic. Re-enter the remnants of Torchwood, the crack alien-fighting unit that's all too acquainted with mortality.

The only surviving members — dashing Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), who in a neat twist finds his immortality reversed, and scrappy earth-mother Gwen (Eve Myles) — are reunited to battle a global conspiracy, recruited by a mortally injured yet undying CIA agent (a tiresomely bullheaded Mekhi Phifer) who pledges to get to the bottom of this mystery if it kills him. Because it can't.

Torchwood raised its game when it evolved to a miniseries format in 2009's grippingly horrific Children of Earth, but Miracle Day is double the length, which in the early chapters leads to some ponderous, if topical, mumbo-jumbo about universal health care and sinister Big Pharmaceuticals. Our heroes' new companions may be less than electrifying, but there's plenty of action to compensate — and, as always, sex (though Capt. Jack now asks about protection) — and a chilling adversary in Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman), a psycho killer who survives execution and becomes a perverse cult hero in the media.

I'm impatiently dying to see what dark and freaky places Torchwood will take us to before it's over...

HAVEN - BRANDON SUN: Hollywood stars in 'Haven' get comfortable in Chester, N.S.

By: Bill Brioux
14/07/2011

CHESTER, N.S. - You know you're in a Canadian TV studio when you realize it used to be a hockey rink.

For the past two seasons, Chester's Eleanor Pew Morris Memorial Arena has been home to "Haven," the supernatural cop show returning Monday at 10 p.m. ET on Showcase [and in the US on Syfy, Friday, July 15 at 10/9C]

There are two ice pads at the arena but for the past few years there's no ice — just wooden sets, lights and cameras penned in by the boards and glass.

Few viewers would suspect that much of what they are watching on the spooky, sci-fi series — based on a Stephen King tale — originates inside a hockey rink.

Look up in the rafters and there are banners proclaiming winning seasons for Chester's peewee and atom hockey teams. There's a sign advertising skate sharpening for four dollars. Along the floor, large yellow ducts funnel warm air into the main set areas, needed after weeks of cold, rainy weather.

On this day, the busiest set is the main police station where stars Emily Rose and Lucas Byrant — the ex-FBI agent and local cop who are the Mulder and Scully of "Haven" — were shooting scenes. A gathering of journalists sat in and observed and were treated like family by the cast and crew. Even the food served by the local craft services people was pure comfort food — Shake ’N Bake chicken...

Warehouse 13 season 3

WAREHOUSE 13 - DAILY ACTOR: Q & A: Saul Rubinek, Eddie McClintok and Allison Scagliotti

July 14, 2011
by Lance Carter

Syfy’s Warehouse 13 is in full swing on it’s 3rd season and stars Saul Rubinek, Eddie McClintock and Allison Scagliotti got together for a press conference call and talked about keeping their characters exciting, how they survive in a show with a big cast and more.

It’s clear from their bantering back and forth that they clearly like each other, which on a big ensemble show is quite a feat...

Photobucket

... Q: From a personal perspective, how was the experience of filming the third season different from the previous two.

Allison Scagliotti: "I think every episode is different because we learn more and more with every script and with every happy accident and every scary accident because I think Jack has said in the past and Saul, you said, as well, the only procedural aspect of our show is that we have to go find artifacts that threaten the world and the worlds they neutralize and then bring them back. But we’ve could sort of endless, you know, possibilities for what happens around that, what triggers it and what can happen as a result and what’s happening to our characters emotionally.

So I really don’t think that any two episodes are the same and as a result, it just gets to grow more and more."

Saul Rubinek: The seasons are a combination of what happens as a family, how we grow, how our relationships grow, our need for each other, our worry about each other, our exploration of our dark sides and the sides of us – each other that the more we care about each other, the stakes get higher because we lose each other, it becomes more – it would be more unbearable than it would be if we were just people who are just agents..."

And for us, look, we’re in the third season of a hit show. We feel blessed. We love going to work. We have a great time with each other. I think that comes across, at least I hope it does.

HAVEN - CINEMASPY: Eric Balfour Has Found his Home on the Rainy Streets of Haven

By Michael Simpson
July 14, 2011

Haven returns to Syfy in the U.S. on Friday and Showcase in Canada on Monday and, in case you haven’t noticed, we are marking those events with several Haven-related features here on CinemaSpy...

... In this Q&A, Balfour talks about what it’s like to film in the Nova Scotia seaside locations that stands in for Haven, Maine. He also talks about what we can expect from his character in the upcoming season, his own experiences filming Season Two and his frequent encounters with the supernatural...

Photobucket

... Q: Do you know if there’s going to be an answer as to why there are Troubles or why they come back?

Eric Balfour: "I do know for a fact that Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, the creators of the show, definitely, 100%, know exactly what’s going on in this town. So some day, I know they will, but I think it’s probably not going to happen for like Season 5 or 6. They’re going to prolong it as long as they can, but they definitely, definitely, definitely have an answer.

I’ve always imagined, in my mind, that what’s going on in Haven is in some ways it’s almost like global warming. As things shift in the universe of Haven and the world shifts and humanity shifts, things change. At one time, Haven, this town, was exactly, as its name implies, was a safe haven for people that had these supernatural curses or troubles or afflictions. As nature changes, something happened in the energy of this town that, you know, created this Molotov cocktail of supernatural occurrences. And I always felt that it was much more evolutionary versus being one single action...

Torchwood 2

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - SFX MAGAZINE: Bill Pullman Interview

July 14, 2011

When news first surfaced that Torchwood: Miracle Day’s main bad guy would be a child murderer, Oswald Danes, who survives execution because of Miracle Day (the day when people stop dying), more than a few eyebrows were raised. Was it tasteless, or morally dubious to feature such a character in a science fiction action series? A series that’s a spin-off from the family entertainment phenomenon that is Doctor Who. But as anybody who’d seen Children Of Earth knew, Torchwood had moved on a long way, and series creator Russell T Davies wasn’t afraid to tackle to dark side of humanity in surprising and thought-provoking ways.

Nevertheless, it was going to take someone with serious acting chops to pull off a character like Danes. So that’s who the show’s executive producers – Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner – called on: Bill Pullman. Although still most remembered by genre fans as the president in Independence Day, Pullman is no stranger to more twisted roles in films such as Lost Highway and The Guilty.

When SFX calls him up for an exclusive chat about Miracle Day, he immediately jokes that what we’ve interrupted him in the midst of a very un-sci-fi occupation: “I just came out of the fields. I have a ranch with my brother here in Montana. It’s just starting into haying season. I feel very far from sci-fi...

Photobucket

... Q: Is it a bit of a back-handed compliment being asked to play a child murderer?

Bill Pullman: “Well, you know, I have played a bunch of troubled characters before, so I was kinda prepared for it. I’m not shy of that kind of stuff. Other people can worry more about that sort of thing, but I don’t. It was just a well written part. I don’t think I could do a child murderer just for a child murderer’s sake, you know. And in a kind of way, that’s just the condition he begins with, and then because of circumstances, he has to extend beyond that. Then it’s a question of whether he’s carrying too much baggage to be able to do that.

Q: Yes, because although he starts out – for want of a better shorthand – as a Hannibal Lecter character, he develops into a Billy Graham, or maybe messianic character, doesn’t he?

Bill Pullman: “That’s exactly it. Either by fluke, or coincidence, or divine destiny, his failure to die becomes the pivot for a whole world that has changed. He becomes a global celebrity, in a way. People begin to listen to him and he has a message they want to hear. He’s an intelligent guy, so he’s recognising opportunities, and sensing all the layers of threat that could come and throw him off his throne. He recognises all these powers that want to co-opt him. He has to make alliances with difficult people that he is not comfortable with. So you get a look at that kind of intricacies of power...
