MASTERPIECE MYSTERY - ZEN - KANSAS CITY STAR: In 'Zen,' Rufus Sewell exploits his dark, brooding side as seducer and sleuth

By LUAINE LEE
Mon, Jul. 11, 2011

For actor Rufus Sewell it's not the carefully orchestrated steps in life that make you shine. It's all the missteps.

"Everything I do that's a strongly held belief is based on having learnt from doing the opposite," he says in his slightly breathy British tone.

"It's how I've learned my craft is by getting things wrong. I think it's very valuable to get things wrong if you can learn what you don't want to do again."

Ever since he braved the stage as a porter in "Macbeth," Sewell has explored the consequences of his choices.

"I get more obstinate as I get older. I've just learned what makes me unhappy, and it's always my fault in the end," he says seated in a deserted bar in the late afternoon, the sun spilling a slanted shaft on the flowered carpet.

"There's always some point you can trace it back to when you said 'yes' when you should've said 'no,' when you're aware dimly of all the facts, but you choose not to look at them. In my experience there's always that place I can point it embarrassingly back to, a point when I should've done something else - and for some reason didn't."

His credits - projects like "Dark City," "Eleventh Hour," "The Pillars of the Earth," "The Tourist," "A Knight's Tale" contradict his premise.

So does his latest endeavor, the role of the smooth but determined Italian detective in the "Masterpiece Mystery!" production of "Zen," premiering July 17 [on PBS].

In "Zen," Sewell exploits his dark, brooding looks as both seducer and sleuth. "The worst times are always immediately after I've made a leap in my work," he says, his hazel eyes pinpointed by the sunlight...

EUREKA - THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: Comic Con 2011 Craig Ferguson Q and A

With hundreds of thousands of people attending San Diego Comic-Con every year and the July 20-24 event quickly approaching, The Hollywood Reporter chatted with the big names in television to discuss their favorite memories and tips for attending the annual event. THR’s Live Feed will talk Comic-Con with actors, writers and producers in the days leading up to the event so check back soon for interviews and the latest news on panels and screenings.

... THR: What was the best thing a fan said to you in San Diego?

Ferguson: "It wasn’t a fan, it was Bruce Boxleitner. We were in an elevator together and I grew up on Bruce and he turned around and said, “I’d love to do an episode of your show. It’s a good little show.” The fact that he had seen something that I had done was a huge, huge moment. I was tongue-tied, I didn’t know what to say. That was probably the nicest thing that’s happened, when someone you’ve looked up to pays you a kind word and you realize, "I guess it is on TV." I’ll never forget it."

... THR: If you had to pick out a costume for Comic-Con, who would you go as?

Ferguson: I would dress up as Amanda Tapping, just because you know you’ll bump into them at some point and they’ll go, “Really? You’re dressed as me.” I would get a kick out of that..."

Eureka season 4.5 airs Mondays at 8/7C on Syfy.

... The Hollywood Reporter: What was your first Comic-Con experience like?

Eddie McClintock: "The first year we went, no one knew about the show so our first panel, there were maybe several hundred people there and even then it was pretty exciting. Last year, the Eureka and Warehouse panels were one right after the other so it had tripled in size. I like having the interaction with the fans, even though Comic-Con is more of an industry-driven convention. They know every line from every Star Trek movie or even Warehouse 13; we’ve got some pretty hardcore fans..."

HAVEN - STARRY CONSTELLATION MAGAZINE: Eric Balfour Interview

by: Jamie Steinberg

... Q) You're playing this ambiguous character in Haven. And you don't exactly know what's going on with him from week to week. But how do you get in the mindset to play this part?

Eric Balfour: "Yes, what it usually entails is a lot of phone calls and emails back and forth from the writers. Because this show is so intricate in its dynamics, you're always having to ask questions and to get questions answered. There's two different schools of thought. Some people like to keep the actors guessing, because they want their responses to be honest. For me, as an actor, I (always) like to know what's coming ahead, because I feel like it is my job to paint a palette, and to know that if I'm going from A to B, there's certain hills and valleys that I'll want to hit along the way. So I like to know the answers. So a lot of the time it's me reading the next week's script and then sending like two-page emails to the writers with a thousand questions and they just go, "Oh, man. Balfour is emailing us again. What are we going to do?" But they're always really cool about it. And they always take the time to answer our questions and talk us through things. And they're - I've got to hand it to them. They're amazing in that way, that really appreciate and respect how much we have breathed life into these characters. And so they really do value our opinions about what our characters do. And it's really neat. It's cool..."

EUREKA - MR MEDIA: Niall Matter Video Interview - Part One

by Bob Andelman
July 10th, 2011

If you’ve never watched “Eureka” – which return[ed] to Syfy for season 4.5 on Monday, July 11 ... – what’s wrong with you? It’s one of the smartest shows on TV these days, always managing to one-up itself. It’s part of a lineup of great returning summer shows alongside “Warehouse 13” and “Haven.”

And thanks to an inspired new take on the old alternate timeline scheme, Niall Matter has earned an opportunity to return to Zane’s wilder nature. Before several of the show’s leads went back in time to World War II-era Eureka, he was on the verge of marrying Deputy Jo. But when their return to modern-day Eureka screwed up the time-space continuum, Zane knew nothing of the other’s Zane’s proposal and instead of being ready to wed, he was ready to party all the time.

Sharp-eyed viewers probably already recognize Matter from stints on several Syfy standards, including “Stargate Atlantis” and “Warehouse 13,” although he may be best known to others as “Mothman” from the film adaptation of the Watchmen graphic novel.

Now it’s my pleasure to greet the only man to ever be a guest on this show and be better looking than me, Niall Matter.
