TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: Eve Myles: 'There Was A Lot of Retraining for Gwen'

7/8/2011
by Jethro Nededog

When Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres on Starz Friday at 10 p.m., fans of the franchise will have a few things to celebrate. First, that the series is back at all as the co-production between BBC and the pay channel has pretty much made a return possible. Then, fans will have John Barrowman and Eve Myles reprising their roles as Torchwood’s Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, respectively.

Miracle Day is what brings the final two Torchwood members back into action. Earth is experiencing a strange phenomenon as no one dies. It’s considered a blessing at first, but becomes a global crisis very quickly.

THR spoke to Myles about where we’ll find Gwen in the Season 4 premiere, what it was like to welcome several new cast members to the fold, and if there’s anything new to learn about her character...

Photobucket

... THR: Have you learned anything new about your character in Miracle Day?

Myles: "Oh, yes. There’s one scene that Gwen and Jack have. They’re in a car together, and they can’t escape. And they drive through the night. And for me this year, out of all the fabulous, big, action scenes that I get to do -- I do all my own stunts -- even though all that’s kind of wonderful and big, kind of Hollywood blockbuster kind of things that we got to do, my favorite scenes this year were the scenes with John Barrowman in the car, because it’s all character scenes. And Gwen talks about things that you would never expect Gwen to talk about or admit to. And it’s very, very character-driven. It will surprise people. And then Jack retaliates with what he thinks, and they just lay it all out on the table, and it’s fascinating. So, you learn an awful lot about these characters as did John and I about the characters, also."

THR: How far into the series does this scene in the car happen?

Myles: "It’s kind of in the middle of the series. But you’ve also got -- I can’t talk for John -- but there was a lot of retraining for Gwen this year, because she’s a mum and she can’t just jump into the fire straightaway. She’s got to kind of test the fire before she jumps into it. And that’s really difficult for somebody like Gwen Cooper, who just throws herself at everything 100 percent. Sometimes with dire effect, but at least she’s got the balls to do it..."

STARGATE UNIVERSE - MY FANBASE: Patrick Gilmore Interview

Patrick Gilmore plays the part of the shady playboy Tom Drexler in the AMC series "The Killing" and the role of Dr. Dale Volker in the science fiction show "Stargate Universe". With David Blue and Elyse Levesque he's the third person from the main cast of this show we could talk to...

Photobucket

... 6. How did you feel about the end of SGU just as your character Dale Volker had a big storyline with his illness?

Patrick Gilmore: "...and then there's the way SGU ended. Ha. SGU was a surprise to me because I've never been an avid fan of SciFi TV. But then I get cast in this one and I start getting the scripts and I find that I'm up in the production offices every week pacing around the photo copier waiting for the next story. I became a fan of a SciFi show. I've been in others, but SGU transcended them because, as we've established, I like smart character dramas. These were dark, conflicted characters reacting to SciFi, not SciFi with a dusting of characters. As the seasons progressed my character did become more involved in plot lines, but, being so invested in the overall story, I lament the show more than Volker's arc. Even if Volker was killed off, I would have tuned in every week to see where Destiny was ultimately going..."

TORCHWOOD: NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: 'Torchwood' And 'Curb': Two Summer TV Treats

by David Bianculli
July 8, 2011

This month, while the broadcast networks are taking it easy, some competitors are serving up lots of excellent, unusual television. The action starts this weekend with a new version of the British sci-fi series Torchwood and the Larry David comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Torchwood is a show that may not even be on many people's radar. It's a British show, which ran for three seasons and was imported and shown here by BBC America. It's a sci-fi show about a sort of overseas X-Files unit, run by a cocky hero who is not only irreverent, and American, but immortal. And a time traveler. And bisexual...

Photobucket

... So if you're sneering at the idea of sci-fi and fantasy, you shouldn't — not if it's in the right hands. In the past, I've had to try to persuade people to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Lost, and Battlestar Galactica, and The Walking Dead, as genre shows that had something to say and said it cleverly. And the same goes for Torchwood, which begins its new incarnation Friday evening at 10:00 pm EST on the Starz cable network...

Photobucket

... The acting, as well as the writing, is really strong here. Barrowman, as Jack Harkness, is an old-school swashbuckler with new-school sass — kind of like a bisexual Bruce Willis. Bill Pullman, who usually plays the likable hero in films like Independence Day, portrays a creepy, odious, pedophile murderer here — yet one who, thanks to the media, finds both a voice and a mission. And Lauren Ambrose, who was so wonderful in Six Feet Under as teenager Claire Fisher, gets a meaty adult role here, as an opportunistic agent who offers to represent the executed, but not dead, killer.

I've previewed the first three episodes of Torchwood, and they left me hanging, and eager to see more. So give it a chance, please. And if you want to catch up, BBC Home Video is releasing the entire three-season British version of Torchwood on DVD and Blu-Ray July 19...

WAREHOUSE 13 - DAEMON'S TV: Saul Rubinek Talks The New Season, Shmacting and The Dangers of Acting

by Eric
Jul 7, 2011

Did you miss your weekly dose of artifacts? Well, the Warehouse 13 crew is coming back next Monday with a kick ass premiere, brand new storylines and amazing casting. Daemon’s TV was lucky enough to catch up with the very talented Saul Rubinek, who plays Artie Nielsen, the smart but impatient leader of the Warehouse 13 team.

Mr. Rubinek opened up about what fans can expect from the new season, the joy of “schmacting” and the insidious dangers of acting. Check out what he had to say below and don’t forget to tune in for the premiere this coming Monday, July 11 on Syfy (9-10 p.m. ET)...

Photobucket

... Q: So, what’s going to happen this season?

Saul Rubinek: "Well, it’s fantasy/adventure. Anything can happen and they have a lot of fun with that. Aaron [Ashmore] is a wonderful addition to our show and it really has an interesting arc this year. One of the things that works best about the show is the way they’ve deepened the mythology of the warehouse, for the three thousand years, whether it’s Warehouse 1 to Warehouse 13. You know there’s a reason that these warehouses exist and it’s a deep mythology and history to how the hierarchy of the administration of the warehouse works.

We’re really getting into how the regents operate and what their jobs are and what their own hierarchy is. It creates a really interesting danger and suspense in the show when you find out about how the regents work and who might be after them. So, that’s been really interesting, and plus, Warehouse 2 and Warehouse 12 played a huge part in our last season, and so, how that mythology works on the show is one of the things that we like best about it. I

I guess the thing that I like personally best about the show is that you can’t tell from one second to the next whether you’re going to be doing comedy or some kind of suspense or drama. We have a joke on our show; we have three types of performing our show. Regular acting we call acting. Then we have schmacting, as in acting schmacting. Schmacting is when you’re working in front of a green screen. Then we have what they normally throw to me which is called facting. Facting is when they throw me exposition and I have to spout off very quickly and in as entertaining a way as possible what the hell these artifacts are, their history and what they do. Facting, schmacting and acting...

THE CLOSER - DESERET NEWS: Kyra Sedgwick opens a new season of 'The Closer'

By Frazier Moore, Associated Press
Friday, July 8, 2011

NEW YORK — Take heart, fans of "The Closer"!

A new season of 10 weekly episodes begins Monday at 9 p.m. EDT. Then the TNT network will air another five episodes this winter and six more next summer before the series comes to a close.

So there's plenty of "The Closer" ahead.

But for Kyra Sedgwick, who stars as LAPD Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, the end is in her sights and on her mind. In December, she and "The Closer" wrap production.

And then? "I'll be home," replies Sedgwick with a display of fingers drumming idly on a table top...

Jon Tenney, Kyra Sedgwick and "Kitty'

... Jon Tenney plays FBI Special Agent Fritz Howard, Brenda's devoted beau-turned-husband, who rightly feels as if their relationship takes a back seat to her cases.

But maybe that's about to change — at least, a little. As the seventh season starts, the LAPD is being reorganized, which could mean the end of Brenda's Major Crimes unit. Meanwhile, Brenda becomes the scapegoat as a lawsuit is filed against the police department. Tough times lie ahead.

"Maybe in the middle of this year," Sedgwick hints, "she will realize that the thing that has always brought her solace and fulfillment — her job — has become a toxic, unsafe place for her, and so she clings to her husband, cleaves to him in a way that she never has before.

"I think that's a good thing," Sedgwick beams approvingly. "By now, everyone is saying, 'Why are they together?' Including me!"

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY - UNREALITY PRIMETIME (UK): Mekhi Phifer Interview

July 8th, 2011 by Lisa McGarry.

... About the cast

Mekhi Phifer: "Eve [Myles] is great, she’s the motherly type. And as far as on the show, she’s more of the protective aunt or something. Gwen and Rex don’t have many issues, except in the beginning, there are a few issues. I take her away from her family – her new baby and husband, so she has a lot disdain for me.

Being on the set on the first day was like the first day of school. You know what I mean about being the new kid on the block? You have a well oiled machine that you’re jumping on and the train is already in motion. But they were very welcoming and very supportive. They’re genuinely nice people, generous. And so it makes for an easy environment to jump on board too. Then you add having really wonderful producers like Russell and Julie, who have great spirits and great energy. They’re supportive as well – an open door policy. It makes for a great work environment. You look forward to coming to work...

ALPHAS - COLLIDER: Exclusive Malik Yoba Interview

by Christina Radish
July 7th, 2011

On the new SyFy series Alphas, actor Malik Yoba plays Bill Harken, a former FBI agent who strictly adheres to procedure and protocol, and who has to always be aware of the amazing strength that comes from his special ability to activate his fight-or-flight response at will. His super-human strength and a resistance to harm that borders on invulnerability is what brings him to the attention of Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn), who makes him part of a clandestine group of individuals that investigate cases that point to others with Alpha abilities.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, Malik Yoba talked about what attracted him to Alphas, after having done 10 other TV series in the past, how he loves his character’s flaws, the collaboration between the writers and actors, and how they’re encouraged to do improv and bring humor to the show. He also talked about the desire to want to write and direct his own projects, and his hope to do more comedy...

Photobucket

... Q: SyFy has had tremendous success with this type of original programming. Do you think those viewers will be able to connect with this show?

YOBA: "It’s a crapshoot, really. Who knows why people like what they like. I think that we produce a good show, there’s a great team involved with all the creative folks, and SyFy is very forward-thinking in how they want to get the word out, but it remains to be seen. At this juncture, I never like to be the person trying to hard sell, saying, “This is why you should watch it.” I know that my fans, who have followed me for years, want to know what I’m doing. As long as we get the word out to all fan bases, people will come and give it a shot and decide for themselves whether or not they should watch it, and I hope they do. I think we have something. I really do. When you do a pilot, you can’t always tell what you have. If you go back and look at the pilot of Seinfeld, no one would have thought that show would be what it became, and television isn’t given that kind of chance anymore. If you’re not hitting it quickly and having success, they’re trying to move onto the next thing. So, using some of these other ways of getting the word out and engaging audiences in a different way can help a show succeed, in a way that it couldn’t have in the past..."

A Daily Guide To Notable Shows

... Torchwood: Miracle Day

10-11PM STARZ, SERIES DEBUT

The premise is that one day, worldwide, nobody dies anymore — no matter how sick or injured. Oh, except for the previously immortal Jack Harkness (star John Barrowman); he can suddenly be hurt and, perhaps, expire. The title's ''miracle'' is quickly recognized as a curse: If no one dies, and the population increases, soon there will not be enough food for the planet. The Torchwood investigative team (now down primarily to just Harkness and Eve Myles' Gwen Cooper) to the rescue! Mekhi Phifer, as a CIA agent working with Torchwood, is much more loose and open than he ever was while on Lie to Me. Among the many pleasures here is a superbly creepy performance by Bill Pullman as Oswald Danes, an infamous pedophile-murderer, and guest stars including Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) and Wayne Knight, transcending Seinfeld's Newman in a dapper business suit.

WAREHOUSE 13 - THE MORTON REPORT: Misfit Of Science: Interview With Warehouse 13's Allison Scagliotti

By Steve Eramo
July 7, 2011

For the past two years, Allison Scagliotti has been helping bag and tag dangerous artifacts in her role as the super-smart, resourceful, steampunk-attired techie and agent-in-training Claudia Donovan on Warehouse 13.

In real life, the actress herself is just as cool as her TV alter ego. On this unseasonably warm Tuesday in Toronto, she along with one of her fellow castmates and the show’s crew are on-location working on the upcoming third season episode “Shadows.” Scagliotti, who is in every scene today, including one inside a second-floor apartment, graciously comes down between takes to sit under a shady tree and chat about her work on the show this year. It only makes sense that the conversation begins with her involvement in this story...

Photobucket

... “The episode we’re currently shooting is number nine, and in it Claudia goes out into the field to help investigate a string of mysterious disappearances in Portland, Oregon,” reveals Scagliotti. “We have a couple of familiar Sci-Fi faces to look forward to in this story. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose their identities just yet; my knowledge of that is kept under lock and key,” jokes the actress. “Claudia’s involvement in this particular case is important because she’s close in age to the young woman who is being affected by this strange phenomenon, so she’s able to talk with her and level with her in a way that Pete [Eddie McClintock] and the others wouldn’t be able to. So there’s a sort of peer element to that relationship..."

EUREKA - COLLIDER: Exclusive Niall Matter Interview

by Christina Radish
July 7th, 2011

When the popular SyFy series Eureka returns for Season 4.5, Zane Donovan (Niall Matter) is still trying to figure out the history between himself and Deputy Sheriff Jo Lupo (Erica Cerra), knowing that things aren’t quite what they seem, as a result of a trip to 1947 that changed the timeline of the town and its residents. Although Zane has a brilliant mind that proves useful in the secret community of geniuses that conduct top-secret research for the government, he’s not sure what to make of his feelings for Lupo, but he’s definitely starting to voice them.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Canadian actor Niall Matter talked about going from guest star to series regular, the joy of essentially getting to explore Zane all over again, maturing personally along with his on screen character, working with co-star Erica Cerra and developing their relationship on the show, and having comic legend Stan Lee guest star on an episode. He also said he hopes to guest star on an episode of SyFy’s latest original drama Alphas, and that he’d like to do a full-blown comedy...

Photobucket

... Q: When you first started on this show, could you ever have imagined that you’d have taken the journey with him that you have, or have you just learned to expect the unexpected with this show?

MATTER: "I have totally come to learn to expect the unexpected here, and I like working that way. I’m a little bit of a gypsy myself. I’ve always had jobs where I’m moving around and I’m not sure what’s going to happen tomorrow or the next day. I’m used to operating in that capacity, so the character Zane actually fits me quite while. He seems to always be ever evolving, as are most people in that town, but Zane has come a long way. He’s had a little bit of regression in some departments, but big progression in others. I really like the direction Season 4.5 goes. I think that the fans are going to be extremely happy, by the end of the season. I really like the relationship and the friendship that Fargo and Zane now share. It’s great. And, that’s still carrying on through into Season 5, which we’re filming right now. It’s becoming a pretty strong bond between the two of them, which is great to actually play because they started off as enemies..."
