GAME OF THRONES - NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Emilia Clarke on Eating Fake Horse Heart, Nude Scenes, and Ned’s Fate

6/17/11
By: Mike Ryan

Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen began Game of Thrones a shy, silver-haired beauty living under the thumb of her brother and then the Dothraki warlord he married her off to, Kahl Drogo. But as the season progressed, she turned into Drogo's confidante and a horse-heart-eating khaleesi, well on her way to being the character beloved by fans of the books. On the heels of the shocking penultimate episode, we spoke to the 24-year-old Clarke about going straight from drama school in London to a hit show on HBO, the rape scene that wasn't really in the book, and how that heart tasted...

Photobucket

... NYM: How were you at riding horses before this series?

Emilia Clarke: "Well, I can ride. Not incredibly, but I felt reasonably competent. But it is so different when they put a camera in front of your horse. You suddenly get such a fear of breaking all of this really expensive equipment and mowing down the director. So I would get quite nervous and then the horse would get very nervous. Yeah, it was a nightmare. I almost got knocked off in the first day when it was raining in Belfast, and I think from then on that’s what sort of set off my fear of riding on-camera. Yes, my horse got quite spooked and there are a lot of scenes where people you can’t see out of the shot are kind of holding on to the horse. And I’m about to fall off..."

FALLING SKIES - CNN: Can 'Falling Skies' save American sci-fi TV?

By Ann Hoevel
June 17, 2011

American sci-fi fans are missing something.

After roughly 20 years on television, the "Stargate" franchise is defunct. The "Battlestar Galactica" franchise is still waiting to launch its latest iteration, "Blood and Chrome," and the resurrected "V" franchise, which ran on ABC, ended after two seasons.

Where are all the aliens on television?

This weekend, at least some aliens will be on TNT, as "Falling Skies" premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. Robert Rodat and Steven Spielberg have been working on the show (an apocalyptic science fiction show about an alien invasion that decimates Earth's societies) for three years, and fans have been waiting...

Photobucket

... In order to fill the programming void, plenty of fans who tuned in to long-established franchises are turning to "Doctor Who" on BBC America and "Eureka," "Haven," "Sanctuary" and "Warehouse 13" on the Syfy channel.

"Falling Skies" executive producer Darryl Frank knows what sci-fi fans have been missing and said it was a specific design of the show to get writers who could offer compelling stories.

"We literally had writers from 'Battlestar Galactica,' 'Lost,' 'Heroes' and for the second season, a writer from 'Stargate,' " Frank said.

"We specifically went out there to pursue people who could tell those types of stories. But then we also wanted to make sure the people that were tuning in weekly who didn't know about the mythology because maybe they missed a week or two could still get on for the ride," he said...

STARGATE SG-1 - BLASTR: 7 TV scientists that even real scientists approve of

By Phil Plait
on Jun 15, 2011

Phil Plait is an astronomer and major sci-fi geek. He writes the Bad Astronomy Blog for Discover Magazine and is also the host of the Discovery Channel's science show "Phil Plait's Bad Universe." You can follow him on Twitter at @BadAstronomer.

In previous articles for Blastr, I've mentioned how hard it can be to be a scientist and watch science fiction. It can take years to get over the urge to hurl heavy objects at the TV screen when science is so carelessly trashed on your favorite show. I've gone through my share of TV sets ...

But with summer reruns upon us, there's time to reflect. After all, the good news is we're getting science and scientists shown in these programs. Maybe it's a caricature of scientists and the work they do, sure, but they're there. TV scientists can be pretty one-dimensional, usually either mad or dashing (or, rarely, both), but the scientists I know in real life run the gamut of funny, nerdy, smart, oblivious, socially awkward, socially ambitious, layered, shallow and complex. They are fat, thin, white, black, men, women, and every conceivable mix of all these traits. And sometimes we see that on TV, too.

That's why I thought, as an astronomer myself, I'd list my favorite TV scientists. My criteria for inclusion are not necessarily the science they do, but how they do it. Maybe it's because they influenced me in some way, or they make me laugh, or make me care. You may not agree with me; it's my list after all and there's always some degree of arbitrariness to any list.

But don't disagree too strongly with me, or else I'll drop you into a black hole/supernova/Stargate/antimatter stream/time vortex/parallel universe. If I've learned one thing from TV science, it's that these things are always handy for disposing of irritations...

... #2 (tie) Dr. Samantha Carter/Dr. Rodney McKay (the "Stargate" franchise)

Photobucket

Amanda Tapping as Dr. Samantha Carter and David Hewlett as Dr. Rodney McKay

McKay and Carter are actual, bona-fide (if fictional) scientists: classically trained and possessing Ph.D.s. Bonus: They're both astrophysicists! It would've been easy for the writers of Stargate to make them one-dimensional plot devices, but somehow over the years the characters grew. Carter became more confident, more of a leader (literally, in the case of Atlantis), and yet still struggled to maintain a personal life. She didn't always succeed, and it tortured her. I was never happy with her unrequited love for O'Neill (as a plot line, that is), because I thought it leveraged on stereotypes of women, but her ability to actually have relationships that were relatively stable was a plus. She had a balance between strength and vulnerability that I found interesting and charming.

McKay, on the other hand ... well, let's just say I know more than one scientist like him: arrogant, awkward, self-centered and irritatingly possessing the intellect to back all that up. I initially worried when watching Atlantis that McKay would be their Doctor Smith, but like Carter, McKay also had the seemingly contradictory traits of cowardliness and resolve that was fun to watch (no doubt due to the skill of actor David Hewlett, yet another science geek IRL). He also sometimes showed flashes of real humanity (like staying by the bedside of a sick woman he cared for, or his "talk" with Carson Beckett at the end of the episode "Sunday"). I suspect his motivations for studying science were his way of showing his superiority over the rest of humanity, but, in his defense, he is pretty damn smart.

Honorable mention: Daniel Jackson, who dies every single season of the show in the name of science...

FALLING SKIES - TEEN TELEVISION: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood and Drew Roy Interview

TeenTelevision is at a boutique hotel in Beverly Hills getting the latest from the cast members of the long-awaited, Spielberg-produced TNT Sci Fi action series “Falling Skies” from cast members Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood and Drew Roy. Episodes roll this coming Sunday at 9:00 (ET/PT).

At least five years in the making, the show focuses on the survivors of an alien invasion that has destroyed the world’s technical capabilities along with most of its citizens. We’re talkin’ no cellphones, i-pods, computers, Wii, etc. Yikes!

The remnants of humanity are resistance fighting in ragtag bands against a much stronger and tech-savvy enemy. These bug-like aliens are grabbing teens and strapping mind-controlling “harnesses” on their backs to insure a slave labor force but what do they really want with our planet and our youth?

Seychelle Gabriel (as Lourdes), Moon Bloodgood (Anne Glass), Sarah Sanguin Carter (Margaret), Drey Roy (Hal Mason) and Noah Wyle (Tom Mason)

... TeenTelevision: By the end of the season what have you each learned about your character?

Drew: Hal goes from being this kid in the beginning to a man by the end of the series through these different battles and women and going after this brother.

Noah: More the women than the battles (laughter).

... Moon: I guess I admired (my character) Anne Glass in the ways she is different from myself; her calmness, always having the unrelenting support of Tom Mason, always keeping her cool and never letting her emotions play into anything. And even having a hard time delving into her past and that trauma. She has to unravel at some point which was nice to do and then string it all back together.

She’s always being level-headed. Watching the pilot I was like “God, I wonder what I would be like in that situation?” I don’t think I’d be as fair or as cool but I’d definitely like to think I’d be as maternal and my character is very much the woman who stands by her man yet very strong on her own. I think some of the strongest women know when to say something and when not to...

FALLING SKIES - COLLIDER: Moon Bloodgood Exclusive Interview

by Christina Radish
Posted:June 16th, 2011

On TNT’s new alien drama Falling Skies, actress Moon Bloodgood plays Anne Glass, a pediatrician who lost her only child in the initial attack. The heart of the ensemble, Anne has yet to fully face her own tragedy because she is too busy helping those around her. She has bonded with Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), as a result of their losses, and keeps up a sturdy exterior, helping the survivors cope both physically and emotionally with their situation, but she is quite obviously haunted by the death of her son.

At a recent press day for the series, Collider sat down with Moon Bloodgood for this exclusive interview, in which she talked about how lucky she was not to have to audition for this role, how relieved she was not to be the action girl this time around, how she’s a big fan of the alien genre and used to even fall asleep watching Aliens as bedtime viewing, and how she doesn’t take anything for granted in this business, out of not wanting to feel the disappointment...

Seychelle Gabriel as Lourdes and Moon Bloodgood as Anne Glass in Falling Skies

... Collider: What is the appeal of doing something like this? Are you a fan of the alien genre?

BLOODGOOD: "Yes. I would be lying if I said there isn’t a part of me that feels it’s a little over-saturated right now, and I was cautious and concerned that that could be something. I don’t think we’re doing anything revolutionary with this show, but I think the reason I liked it, and still do, is because I liked what they were doing with the characters. There’s only so much you can do. At the end of the day, it’s still zombies, and it’s still aliens. You’ve just got to make the story interesting. I love science fiction. That was my whole childhood. I would much rather watch a horror film or science fiction than a comedy. I don’t know why. I just like them. I find them relaxing. I can put them on and go to sleep. I used to put Aliens on and go to sleep. I stopped doing that because I don’t think it’s good for my brain. Whenever you’re dealing with fantasy, and you’re doing vampires or anything that is not too based in reality, and you try to base it in reality, you have so much of a greater chance of sounding hokey. You watch it and you think, “This has to be good. The CGI has to be good. The acting has to be good.” The CGI does have to be good. You can’t just do cheap CGI and think that’s going to work. It doesn’t. If you’re going to do something like Paranormal Activity, then it’s not about the CGI, but it’s shot in a way that’s creative. I get a little tired of vampires, but anytime The Lost Boys is on, that’s the real McCoy. It just doesn’t get old..."

STARGATE ATLANTIS - SCIFI AND TV TALK: David Hewlett Checks In

by Steve Eramo
06/16/2011

It has been a little over two years since Stargate Atlantis’ Dr. Rodney McKay last traded good-natured barbs with his friends and colleagues as well as acerbic quips with various alien bad guys as he helped protect the Pegasus Galaxy along with Earth’s own galaxy from some of the deadliest of extraterrestrial threats. For multi-talented David Hewlett, who played Atlantis’ egotistical genius and occasionally affable scientist, it has been a time of delving into several new creative ventures on the big as well as small screens. One of these gigs is the role of Hunsiker in the upcoming hush-hush feature film Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

One of the most fascinating things for me about working on this film was the number of non-disclosure agreements that you had to sign. You had to basically sign one every time you were given a call sheet,” jokes Hewlett. “As for the job itself, it was absolutely fascinating, especially for a nerd like me. It wasn’t a big part, but I just wanted to go in for it. After all, this was Planet of the Apes.

When I auditioned I knew nothing about the film because they wouldn’t tell you anything about it. Even the characters’ names were changed, so in the movie you didn’t even end up with the same name that you had in the audition. I hope I won’t get into trouble for divulging this, but in my audition it referred to an animal. For example, in the script it read, ‘The animal approached.’ So the director [Rupert Wyatt] said to me, ‘When the monke….um, the animal approaches.’ I said, ‘Wait a minute, you said, monke… It’s a monkey, right? Is it a monkey?

Photobucket

... As is always the case with Hewlett, he has a number of other irons in the fire along with his wife, producer Jane Loughman, including the much talked about Starcrossed web series. “We’re actively pursuing Starcrossed,” enthuses the actor. “I’m working on a feature length version of it, and, in fact, have finished a first synopsis or beat-by-beat of what happens as a feature film. So I got to write a backdoor pilot, basically.

We were approached again by Syfy about a Starcrossed web series, and what they’re saying, which I think is a smart thing, is that, look, we get a lot of shows pitched to us about unemployed Sci-Fi actors, What they like about Starcrossed is that it’s not about the actors, it’s about the show, and the making of a Sci-Fi show, so we had to figure out how to make that financially viable on the web..."
