CASTLE - TV GUIDE: Matt's TV Week in Review

May 23, 2011
by Matt Roush

... KISS ME KATE: Runner-up shocker of the week: the emotionally charged Castle finale in which we learn Capt. Montgomery was in on the conspiracy involving the murder of Beckett's mom from the beginning. Inadvertently, of course, but he still has to pay the price, dying a hero's death to save Kate from the hit man. Naturally, there's someone else out there pulling the strings, and even with his life on the line, Capt. Ray won't tell her who. Castle spends much of the hour trying to persuade Beckett (with urging from her father) to play it safe and step back from this dangerous case, telling her she deserves to be happy. But it backfires, and in a very heated scene, she challenges him on the nature of their relationship and declares it to be over. Even sidekicks Esposito and Ryan come to blows over their boss being dirty. Everyone's reconciled at the Captain's sad funeral, but as Beckett is giving the eulogy, Castle sees the sun flashing off an object in the distance, and before he can tackle his partner to the ground, she takes a bullet. Castle declares, "I love you, Kate," over her fallen body as her eyes close — and ours roll a bit at the thought that anyone might actually think she's dead.

SANCTUARY - RED EYE CHICAGO: Filming 'Normandy' 'was amazing'

By Curt Wagner
May 22, 2011

When I visited the Vancouver set of "Sanctuary" last year, I stopped in showrunner Damian Kindler's office to chat about Season 3 and found him deep into research about WW II.

"I'll start by saying please ignore the military maps of World War II that are sitting on my chair next to us, if you don't mind," he said.

He was finishing up the writing of "Normandy," the episode we've heard a lot about that premieres at 10/9C May 23 on Syfy. He wasn't eager to tell much about the episode at the time, but he did say, "We are going see [Helen Magnus] in 1944 Normandy..."

... Me: Driving a tank?
DK: Hunting Nazis.

That's cool.
DK: She won't wear army boots though. Not a chance. No.

Still high heels?
DK: Absolutely.

But will they be camouflaged high heels?
DK: Absolutely.

I'm not sure about the camo heels, but "Normandy" is a bit of a departure for "Sanctuary." Yes, we've see Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and The Five in the past before, but I can't recall an episode ever beginning and ending in the past, with no scenes set in the present...

SANCTUARY - POP CULTURE ZOO: Catching Up with Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne

By Joseph Dilworth Jr.
Published May 23, 2011

Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne, two of the stars of the hit Syfy series Sanctuary, are probably the coolest persons to interview. As you’ll see below, they enjoy kidding around almost as much as they love talking about their show. While the last few episodes of season three air Monday nights at 10:00 PM, production has just begun on the fourth season. I was able to catch the duo by phone during a recent lunch break and we discussed their characters, what it’s like to direct on a show you’ve been starring on for a while and a tease or two about what’s to come (at the risk of my life!). Here are the results...

Photobucket

... PCZ: Gotcha, yeah, definitely! So then Monday we’ve got the “Normandy” episode, which promises to be a pretty big episode, we get to see The Five and Helen during World War II. What can you tell us about this episode?

RD: Just that it’s the biggest episode in scope and every aspect that we’ve ever done and it was an amazing experience. Again, one of those classic Sanctuary episodes where thinking outside the box is the norm. And just being there on set and experiencing that, we were all really blown away. I can’t wait for people to experience it.

AT: It’s a whole different Sanctuary. It’s a different look.

AT: We desaturated the colors so it really has the palate of an old World War II film. There was a reverence on set while we were shooting that belied the actual conditions we were shooting under. We were on the top of a mountain in the pouring rain, freezing cold; not a single person complained because we realized we were telling a story where the people we were paying homage to went through a million times worse than what we were dealing with, and it just was a very very interesting, I think unlike anything most of us have seen on a TV show.

RD: And having just seen the episode, the last credit..

AT: Yeah.. oh..

RD: It gets me every time, it was just magical...

BONES - TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: Finale Fever, Cougar Town, The Killing, Cancellation Fallout and More!

Send questions to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow on Twitter!

... Question: I had the Bones finale twist spoiled by a Canadian FB friend, but I pretty much figured that was where it was going when I saw the previews. And I think it's another example of incredibly lazy storytelling on the part of the Bones writing team. The whole "Zack is suddenly involved with Gargamel" incident put me off watching for a long time and I'm kind of annoyed with myself with starting again. I'm often irritated by their tendency to do what I call "yadda yadda" in ending their episodes, wrapping up mysteries in ways that make no sense or show any care on the part of the people constructing them. I realize Bones is more about the characters than the mystery, but a little effort to tie up the mystery would be appreciated. To handle a crucial plot point like Bones and Booth sleeping together and having a baby this way is so disappointing. That's all they have for loyal viewers? Seeley and Tempe are too stupid to use birth control? Seeley, who has already suffered the consequences of accidentally getting someone pregnant, is dumb enough to do it again? With its charming cast and American Idol lead-in, Bones should be able to be as big a hit as NCIS, but I really feel the hit-or-miss writing is what has always held the show back. I'd like to tie the writers in chairs and have them watch a few years of NCIS, and maybe they could learn how to slowly unfold a story arc, have realistic character development and not basically flip off your fans. It infuriates me because I actually enjoy this show most of the time. I feel like a parent with a smart kid who keeps brining home C minus grades when I know they could ace the test. I know they can do better! — Cyn

Matt Roush: I have to say, the angry tone of this letter shocks me (but doesn't really surprise me, given the beating Bones gets for nearly everything the writers do with the characters). While the pregnancy twist at the end was abrupt, I felt it was handled rather sweetly, especially in light of all the Angela-Hodgins angst this season, and anything that would put Bones and Booth in a happy place is OK by me. I agree that the focus on character and relationships on Bones often short-changes the mystery of the week, but I don't see how this development "flips off" the fans — especially because most fans know Emily Deschanel is pregnant herself and would probably gripe all next season if they'd made her hide it. And while it's true Bones will never get the monster ratings NCIS enjoys, that's the difference between a procedural on Fox and on CBS — and considering how well Bones is doing on Thursdays, even considering the Idol lead-in (which doesn't benefit every show equally), they must be doing something right.
