TV OF THE ABSURD: Joe Flanigan Stars in Ferocious Planet

Speaking about his new movie Ferocious Planet, Stargate Atlantis star Joe Flanigan says, "to just get back into some camouflage and run around and shoot things. Call me crazy. I know it sounds a little weird, but I felt right at home!"

As a matter of fact, there are so many similarities between the Syfy series and the new original movie, at a quick glance, it can be hard to tell them apart. Just look at the photo of Flanigan on the run with his movie co-star -- looks like Atlantis to me!

In Ferocious Planet, Flanigan plays a disgraced Colonel who has been assigned to babysit a couple of scientists working in a bunker next door to the IRS. Enter John Rhys-Davies, a borish Senator who threatens to cut off the project's funding if Dr. O'Hara (Dagmar Döring) can't convince him that she's doing something worthwhile.

Against her better judgment, she fires up the machine which creates a window into parallel dimensions. Unfortunately, things go sideways and the entire bunker is thrown through a portal and into a land that is inhabited by creepy creatures that skitter around your feet and big mama monsters who don't take kindly to visitors.

From there, it's non-stop action as Flanigan and his two teammates do all they can to protect the civilians while the Doctor and her tech work on a way to get them back home.

Like all Syfy Original Movies, Ferocious Planet surges forward with tongue firmly planted in cheek. That's not to say that it's as wild as Mega Piranha or Sharktopus. The parallel dimension plot makes the creatures much more believable, kind of like an episode of Primeval.

Flanigan plays the whole thing like a war-weary commando whose quick with a quip and more annoyed than fearful of being killed. Flanigan says his calm demeanor was less of a directorial choice and more about the fact that he was mislead in regard to the size of the monsters.

"I didn't think they'd be that big," he told reporters on a recent conference call. "When we shot this, we shot it Ireland, and we worked strictly on green screen, and we weren’t given much in the way of what it was going to look like. And that’s kind of interesting because on [Stargate Atlantis], we always knew what the Wraith were going to look like. And so, you had an idea of what you were looking at and what you were working with. [With Ferocious Planet], we weren’t entirely clear what these things were going to look like until after we shot it, so I was just hoping that our levels of appropriate fear were there..."

FEROCIOUS PLANET - PAZAZ: Joe Flanigan Interview

This is an interview from April 6, 2011 with Joe Flanigan from the Syfy movie Ferocious Planet. In "Ferocious Planet," an experimental device designed to view alternate universes malfunctions on its first demonstration, transporting a group of observers into a nightmarish new dimension. The team must use ingenuity and courage to outwit the bloodthirsty creatures of this bizarre world, while trying to repair the damaged machine and return home...

... Question: What did you find to be the most challenging part of making the film?

Joe Flanigan: "Well, a lot of the visual effects were not entirely fleshed out and shown to us. So when you're acting, you're acting against what you think will be the special effects in post-production. And you can only guess. So when you go and gauge your reaction to something, you have something in your head, I had some drawings they gave me. But when I saw the movie, the monsters were way bigger than I thought they were.

Oh, my God. It's very, very tricky and fraught with a lot of obstacles when you're doing science fiction acting. And I'm a bit of a stickler on set about making sure I know exactly what the levels of urgency are so that I don't get a lot of egg on my face after they do a lot of the post-production. And you say to yourself, "My God! Why is he not reacting to the 300 foot tall monster?" Because I thought it was 3 feet tall. So you can imagine it gets tricky.

Honestly, I think science fiction acting is an art form, and I think it's so much harder than people have any idea, and I don't think it gets the respect that it deserves. And if you talk to people like Robert Patrick and these guys, they'll tell you how truly difficult it could be..."

... NEW BREED OF MONSTER - “I think The Silence are one of the greatest monsters of recent years and certainly one of the scariest,” reveals Matt Smith. “They’re also very clever and I love the fact they’ve been silently working since the dawn of time to make The Doctor come unstuck.”

... FILMING IN AMERICA - While the majority of filming for Doctor Who usually takes place in Cardiff, the cast found themselves in the middle of the desert in Utah last November to film scenes for the opening two-parter. “The new season starts with a real bang,” exclaims Karen. “Filming in Utah was so much fun and I spent a lot of time running around the desert; the scenery was amazing and simply wouldn’t have looked the same if we had filmed it in Cardiff against a green screen. The desert backdrop really gives the opening two episodes an epic feel.”

However, it wasn’t all fun for the actors as temperatures plunged below freezing at night and then they had to battle searing temperatures during the day. “We were all ‘thermaled’ up and I had on two pairs of trousers and four tops! Then the sun would come up making it blistering hot and we’d all peel off the layers,” laughs Karen...
