TV GUIDE: 5 Reasons We Love Castle's Molly Quinn

Mar 21, 2011
by Damian Holbrook

While devilish Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) has been busy solving crimes, angel-faced Molly Quinn has stolen our hearts as the mystery novelist's whip-smart (but refreshingly non-smartass) daughter, Alexis. Here's the evidence in our case for loving her...

... 1. She's a TV teen who actually makes sense... and is humble about It!
"Alexis is written so well... She's [Castle creator] Andrew Marlowe's 'child,' and I'm happy to portray that," says the 17-year-old, adding that her anti-brat celebrates "kids out there who want to do that crazy teenager stuff but withhold because, honestly, they're smarter than that..."

THE NERD APPROPRIATE: Jewel Staite: The Nerd Appropriate Interview

Dated: Mar 21 | By: Ash

We all love Jewel Staite ... more than friends. From starship mechanics, to inter-dimensional doctors, Jewel brings a likability and quirky charm to whatever role she inhabits. She’s just a blast to watch on screen. I’ve been a fan of Jewel for a long time, but like many of you she first caught my eye as the unrefined Kaylee Frye on Joss Whendon’s spectacular, yet short lived, series Firefly. After Firefly’s tragic and unwarrented execution, Jewel went on to join the cast of Stargate: Atlantis, as Dr. Jennifer Keller. Last month I had the pleasure of getting a screener for Jewel’s new short film “The Pact” which just premiered at Sundance 2011. The film was terrifying, and made me look at Jewel in a whole new light. Put on your “Jane-Hats“, slap on those creepy blue rubber gloves, because it’s time for Jewel Staite: The Nerd Appropriate Interview...

... NA-Ash: I was lucky enough to interview Nicholas McCarthy who directed you in The Pact, a short horror/suspense film that just premiered at Sundance 2011. The movie scared the hell out of me and I thought that you gave one of the best performances of your career. What can you tell us about the making of this creepy gem?

Jewel: Aw, shucks! Thank you! The Pact came to my attention in a bit of a weird way. Morena Baccarin’s boyfriend is a filmmaker, and he forwarded me the script that a friend of his (Nicholas McCarthy) had written. I totally fell in love with it, so I took a meeting with Nicholas. And then promptly fell in love with him. He’s just brilliant, and I knew it would be a really different experience for me, both professionally and creatively. I haven’t felt that inspired and jazzed about something in a long time. Sam Ball, who played my brother, is such a genius, and Nicholas has this way of talking to actors that really brings out a different side to your skill. I’d work with both of them again in a heartbeat...

... Question: I am a huge fan of the always adorable and roguishly charming Mark Valley. My husband and I are big fans of Human Target. I fear it's going to be canceled just like his other great show Keen Eddie. Fox has not done much promotion for Human Target. It also doesn't help that they kept changing the day and time. They might as well have called it Moving Target. With that said, this show would do great on the USA Network or TNT. It would be a great companion for Burn Notice or White Collar, or TNT's Leverage. Any chance of that happening? — Lynne

Matt Roush: Pretty slim to nada. These networks already have a full slate of successful series, and more in development, and I would assume Human Target would take a sizable budget cut if it moved to cable, so it might not even feel like quite the same show. I agree that Target would be a good fit with the escapist romps on these channels, and TNT is part of the corporate family that includes the Warner Bros. studio, so that would be the more likely scenario. But still, a very long shot.

Fringe Friday

TV GUIDE: Ask Matt: SNL, Castle, Fringe, Glee, Being Human and More!

... Question: Just wanted to give two big thumbs up to Anna Torv's "channeling" of Leonard Nimoy (as William Bell) in Friday's episode of Fringe. I could have watched her do that for two hours instead of just one. From the graveled hoarseness in her voice to the arching of her eyebrow, she had Leonard down pat. I have no idea if Leonard Nimoy would have watched this impersonation of him, but I hope if he did, he appreciated it as much as the rest of the Fringe fans. This reminded me of what David Duchovny did on The X-Files in the "Small Potatoes" episode where he had to behave like the little shape-shifting guy Eddie Van Blundht trying to masquerade as Mulder. Granted a little more complex role, but nonetheless the same kind of quirkiness that made The X-Files such a treat to watch, and Fringe can do the same (as does Supernatural). Of course Anna Torv does a great job throughout the series being her alternate Olivia, but this was a step above. Keep up the good work, Anna. — JG

Matt Roush: Wasn't she great? I especially got a kick out of the more playful moments: Bell-Livia remarking on how binding a bra was, or creeping Astrid out with her/his flirting. And the final moment, when the church bells brought the dormant Olivia back to the surface for a fleeting panicked moment, was just chilling. In the first season of Fringe, I found Anna Torv's performance the show's greatest liability. This season, with her pulling double duty as Alt-livia in the parallel world and now this inspired twist, she's among its greatest assets. Nicely played indeed. And comparisons to The X-Files are very apt these days. Fringe is that good.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Stargate Universe Writers' Room - Carl Binder

Among the many contributions executive producer/writer Carl Binder has made to the Stargate franchise is his character-driven stories. Letters from Pegasus, Before I Sleep, Michael, Lifeline and Missing are just a few such scripts he penned for Stargate Atlantis. Binder has since put his talents for writing character pieces to good use on Stargate Universe. His first script for the show’s second season, entitled Pathogen, was also the first episode shot for year two and directed by Robert Carlyle, who plays Dr. Nicholas Rush.

“We looked at the first four or five scripts that we were starting with for season two and out of all of them we felt that Pathogen would be the best one for Bobby to direct,” says Binder. “It was then moved to the front of the production schedule so that he’d be able to prep for it as opposed to trying to do that while filming another episode, which would have been very difficult. So we decided to start off the season with Bobby’s episode and that was a lot of fun. It was quite a long prep as well because we started, then broke for the [2010] Olympics here in Vancouver, then came back to work and prepped for another week or so before filming began...

... The writer’s third script for this season, Hope [Airs: March 28 10/9C on Syfy], is a medical drama that was shot in August 2010 after the summer production hiatus. “Rob Cooper had an idea about what would our characters do if they had a serious medical emergency on board Destiny,” says Binder. “This episode follows one in which there is a problem with the communication stones and they lose contact with Earth for a while. Now we have a situation in which one of Destiny’s crew needs a major operation, but without the stones there’s no way to connect to Earth and get a doctor to take over and perform the operation, so TJ [Alaina Huffman] has to do it. Meanwhile, there’s a second story unfolding at the same time involving a member of the Lucian Alliance and something that happened in an earlier story this season, Malice...”
