OUTCASTS - TOTAL SCIFI ONLINE: Ashley Walters and Michael Legge Interview

Thursday 10 March 2011
by Paul Simpson

In Outcasts, Ashley Walters plays Expeditionary Force leader Jack, while Michael Legge is Tipper, the rebellious genius who helps prevent the settlement on Carpathia avoid destruction. Speaking at the launch of the show, they shared their hopes with Paul Simpson...

... What are your characters looking for?

Photobucket

Ashley Walters

Ashley: For Jack it’s a new opportunity to get the respect that he thinks he deserves. He spends a lot of time trying to prove his intelligence and understanding about what’s going on around him. He’s looked down on a bit in the beginning by others than Mitchell.

There’s a huge division between the PAS officers and the expeditionaries, which creates loads of conflict. Jack’s problem is that some of his friends are PAS officers as well, but he’s such a determined and forceful character that he will do whatever it takes to get the job done. A lot of time you see him turn on people you think are his friends but it’s for the greater good to uphold what he’s there for, which is to protect the people there.

Jack has a very strong mentality and is physically very strong. He is able to do a lot of things that most humans are not capable of when it comes to strength and his physicality. He is basically a brute.

Michael Legge

Michael: Unlike some of the other characters, Tipper has no other choice; he’s been taken away to this planet as a boy, because he’s a child genius; he has a photographic memory and a very high IQ. When he gets to the planet, he wants to rebel against why he’s there, so he doesn’t work for PAS. Because he doesn’t have family and friends around him in transit or on Carpathia, he becomes fiercely independent.

He also has his music, so he sets up a pirate radio station. His objective is just to live in the present and have fun. PAS frequently ask him to help because of his genius, and often he says no. He just wants to run his shack with his decks in. He’s one of the few light characters – he deflects a lot of the darkness in Forthaven...

STAR PULSE: On Location With 'Justified'

by Brittany Frederick
March 10th, 2011

Nothing can top FX's Justified, which is the best show currently on television - except for the chance to see how the near-perfect drama series comes together.

It's Monday morning in Newhall, CA - the oldest district of the city of Santa Clarita, and less than two miles from the California Institute of the Arts, where I went to school a decade ago. The call sheet I'm handed when I arrive at the shooting location tells me that everyone else has been here - a nondescript suburban block that could be anywhere - since 6:30 at the latest. Suddenly, my 8 AM wake-up call doesn't seem so bad.

On this particular day, we're shooting scenes from the season finale (episode 213), entitled "Bloody Harlan." I'm cautioned not to reveal any spoilers for unaired episodes, but I couldn't even if I wanted to. There are only five scenes scheduled for the first unit today, a sixth if time permits. Shooting call was at 7 AM, and things can run as late as 10 PM. That's fifteen hours, typical for a production day on a one-hour drama series. It's quite humbling to be reminded that what ends up being minutes on film to you and I is the result of several hours of hard labor for the dozens of people around me, from the director to the guy who's walking around with eight different colored rolls of tape so he can lay down appropriate marks where necessary...

TV GUIDE: Matt's Weekend Picks Saturday, March 12, 2011

... Battle of Los Angeles

(Saturday, 9/8c, Syfy)

Gotta give Syfy bonus points for cheekiness. On the same weekend the big-budget alien-invasion adventure Battle: LA hits the big screen, Syfy's knowingly cheesy Saturday-night monster-movie franchise — think of it as the drive-in version — covers similar ground with Nia Peeples and Kel Mitchell (of Kenan & Kel) headlining the cast. The scenario: Spaceships swarm L.A. in advance of an alien invasion, and humanity's best hope is for two plucky soldiers to infiltrate the mothership and destroy it from within.

... Fringe

(Friday, 9/8c, Fox)

Hard to imagine the show topping its most recent episode — the haunting "Subject 13" flashback into Olivia and Peter's childhood — but any story that puts Walter Bishop center stage is worth watching, and this week the mournful mad scientist is busy trying to delay the damage he's done to the wall between universes. Good luck with that. Meanwhile, the Fringe Team is on the case of thieves who defy gravity. Now let's see Fringe defy the gravity of those Friday night ratings.

WHAT'S ON TV (UK0: Doctor Who add some cosmic relief to Red Nose Day

Mar 9, 2011

BBC1's Comic Relief night will include a two-part Doctor Who special.

The story, which has been specially written for Comic Relief by the show's head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, will see Matt Smith joining in the fun as the Time Lord alongside Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as her stalwart new husband Rory.

TV&Satellite Week magazine caught up with Matt Smith to find out more...

... So, what can you tell us about the story?

MS: "It's great. The set-up is that the three of us are all in the TARDIS together, and the TARDIS materialises within itself and there are two Amy Ponds. It's a real jaunt and a bit of fun."

Is there a bad Amy and a good Amy?

MS: "I couldn't possibly say, but she is quite pleased to meet herself, put it that way. Rory is bemused by the whole affair but, needless to say, two Amy Ponds in his life is no bad thing. Karen really enjoyed playing two versions of herself and it is a really funny performance from her..."

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Eureka's Colin Ferguson Answers Your Questions

by Steve Eramo
03/10/2011

For the past few years, Colin Ferguson has been policing the streets of a certain Northwestern small town as Sheriff Jack Carter on Eureka. The actor will soon be going back in front of the cameras to start work on a new season of the show, but during his current hiatus, Colin took time out this week to answer some questions from the readers of SciFiAndTvTalk. Without any further delay, here's what he had to say. Enjoy!...

Photobucket

... Do you like physical comedy? What have been some of the toughest physical demands when it comes to shooting scenes as Sheriff Carter on Eureka? (from Larry)

CF - I love physical comedy. I love, love, love it and could do it all day long.... or so I thought. It takes it's toll. My right elbow doesn't work right anymore, my feet are all but shattered, I have back problems that get aggravated, I have tendonitis in both elbows... so those are some of the problems with physical comedy on TV.

It's heartbreaking when you do a scene and you kill it and you're proud and it was hard and a complicated move and it really hurt.... and then you have to do take 2.... and take 3. It takes the wind out of your sails and it's hard to not swear and pace around a bit to calm down. It's tough when you care SO much and then have to remind yourself that it's a team sport and it's okay if you mess up some of your stuff... I guess it's like any job really...

BEING HUMAN 3 (UK) - TOTAL SCIFI ONLINE: Robson Green and Michael Socha: Hungry Like the Wolf

Wednesday 09 March 2011
by Paul Simpson

There are more werewolves than ever in series three of Being Human, with Robson Green and Michael Socha joining the cast as McNair and Tom. Their presence causes multiple problems for resident vampire Mitchell – as well as the current amnesiac house guest, vampire supremo Herrick...

... Q: Did you enjoy playing werewolves?

Michael: It’s the first time I’ve played anything other than a human – and normally chavvy humans as well! This time it’s different, and I’m glad they gave me the chance. It’s good to scream: I’ve never had to frigging scream a lot when something is really painful. The transformation is like a therapy!

Robson: When I got the call, my agent said “He’s a werewolf." I said, “I’m no stranger to the sweet trolley… I’m not in the shape I used to be…” So I’ve taken on a personal trainer full time because this is such a physically demanding job.

Michael’s right. The transformation is liberating and you can’t really bottle out of it, so it takes you to that place. I never went to drama school, but it’s that thing you learn there of not being embarrassed about anything. It’s cathartic and wonderful to do...

Being Human airs on Sunday nights (BBC Three) in the UK, and in the US, on BBC America on Saturday at 9/8C.

Many consider this 1956 offering from veteran Western director John Ford to be the all-time best of the genre. It stars John Wayne as a Civil War soldier whose niece (Natalie Wood) has been kidnapped by the Comanches. Accompanied by her half brother (Jeffrey Hunter), he spends five years searching and eventually finds her. But she has assimilated into the tribe so thoroughly, her Indian-hating uncle now sees her as one of them. Vera Miles also stars.

Cast includes John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond, Natalie Wood, John Qualen, Olive Carey, Henry Brandon, Ken Curtis, Harry Carey Jr. and Hank Worden.

From TCM, LEONARD MALTIN MOVIE REVIEW:

Superb Western saga of Wayne's relentless search for niece (Wood) kidnapped by Indians, spanning many years. Color, scenery, photography all splendid, with moving, insightful Frank Nugent script to match (based on Alan LeMay's novel). And who could ever forget that final shot? Remade and imitated many times since (CARAVANS, WINTERHAWK, GRAYEAGLE, etc.).
