Stargate Universe first premiered on Space in October 2009 to record-breaking audiences. It went on to become the most-watched series on the channel. It’s also been nominated for over 20 awards, including a 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Visual Effects...

TV GUIDE CANADA: Cariou carries on

Len Cariou on the success of ‘Blue Bloods’ and who eats the most on-set

By Greg David
2011-02-18

Len Cariou is a legend of the stage and screens. The Winnipeg native was Broadway’s original Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, appeared on Street Legal, Murder, She Wrote, Brotherhood and Damages.

He can currently be seen on Blue Bloods, playing patriarch Henry Reagan, the curmudgeonly retired police commissioner who dispenses advice – along with mashed potatoes – to son Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and grandson Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), who have continued in the family business. Blue Bloods is an enticing twist on the cop drama genre, successfully adding a strong family dynamic to the mix in the form of nightly Reagan dinners where the ensemble convene to discuss the days events.

We spoke to Cariou, while he was in Toronto for a Valentine’s Day singing gig, about how the cast came together quickly and who eats the most during those dinner scenes...

Photobucket

... TVG: I love Henry because he is so opinionated about how past cops were and questioning how things are done these days. I love the way he – and you – get to interact with all of the characters at dinner. What’s it like being part of that ensemble every week?

LC: It’s terrific, and I think that’s what everybody has glommed on to. That’s the stuff that, when they tested the show before they bought it and put it on the air, was the most positive things that people said to CBS is that it’s really interesting because it’s a very different cop show. It’s not a lot of procedural stuff. We’re actually going to get to know these people. I think people really responded to that.

When we did the pilot, it was the very first scene that we shot. We didn’t know one another from Adam. None of us had ever met before. God bless actors. We sat down and said, “OK, we’re supposed to be this close-knit family, let’s figure something out here.” We chatted for half an hour while they were setting up the shots, and created our own background, with the help of a couple of the writers. We gave ourselves a back story and then they turned the camera on. I think it worked really, really well.

TVG: How much food do you consume during those scenes? Do you try not to eat?

LC: (Laughs.) I try to eat as little as I can. Wahlberg tries to eat as much as he can! He eats everything!

‘Fringe’s Reddick on alternate universes and starring on ‘Glee’

By Greg David
2011-02-11

Lance Reddick would love to appear on Glee. The Baltimore native, who turned heads as Lt. Cedric Daniels, isn’t merely an actor. He’s also a singer and songwriter, which is the reason he was so good tickling the ivories and crooning on the musical “Brown Betty” episode of Fringe last year.

Reddick admits the line to belt it out on Glee is a long one; in the meantime he’s focused on Fringe, which returns with a new episode tonight. We spoke to Reddick on the phone about alternate universes and the death of Alternate Broyles...

Photobucket

... Can you talk a little bit about the differences between The Wire and Fringe? The Wire was based on fact and Fringe … isn’t.

LR: Wow, it really is apples and oranges. It’s not just the writing styles so much. On both shows, it’s not always the same person writing each script. I guess the two biggest differences for me are … network television is such a different animal from cable. On the one hand, because there are so many cooks in the kitchen on a network show, there tend to be a lot of changes with each script.

On the other hand, with each season that becomes less and less because the show has found itself. Once again, with this show the possibilities are changing all the time, anything can happen, whereas The Wire was kind of ultra-realism. David Caruso told me once ‘Your show feels so real it looks like a documentary.’ It really was like a docu-drama. The first season and the characters that went through the seasons were based on real people.

The other thing is that, with The Wire, David Simon knew where he was going from the beginning to the end. He said to me when we were shooting the pilot … he came up to me and sat down with me at lunch one day and he said he was going around and talking to all of the leads about who their characters were based on, what the people were like and where the characters were going. And he described the two people that my character was based on and what they histories were like. And he said ‘You will be moving towards becoming the police commissioner by the end of the fifth season.’ He knew this when we were shooting the pilot, whereas with Fringe I think because it’s much more open-ended, and there is so much more … you know, shape-shifting, alternate realities, two versions of yourself, cold germs the size of your leg (laughs) … but by the same token, the things that are similar they are both socio-political debates.

One of the themes we explored a lot in Season 1 of Fringe is what happens when you have multi-national corporations that are more powerful than a lot of governments. And once we got into this season, we really explored what happens in war when you are so certain that you’re the good people and the others are the enemy … what happens when you confront them and they are literally you?

The other thing that is interesting and intriguing for me with both shows is the relationships and characters are so important...

TV GUIDE CANADA: Just cause

Timothy Olyphant reloads for Season 2 of ‘Justified’

By Greg David
2011-02-28

Timothy Olyphant, it seems, was made to wear a cowboy hat. He donned one as Seth Bullock, the sheriff of Deadwood, in David Milch’s wonderful HBO western. The 42-year-old has one perched atop his head in the upcoming Johnny Depp flick Rango, though his character, Spirit of the West, is animated.

And Season 2 of Justified again finds the Honolulu-born actor firmly affixing a ten-gallon hat to his head as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, who dispenses bon-mots in a lazy Southern drawl as he rounds up baddies on the dusty back roads of Kentucky...

Based on the works of American crime novelist Elmore Leonard – in particular the short story “Fire in the Hole” – Justified is created and developed by Canadian Graham Yost (Band of Brothers), and finds Raylan (Olyphant) fully immersed in his home soil of Harlan County. Where Season 1 had Raylan rejecting his transfer from Miami (where he had shot a drug runner dead in broad daylight) to Harlan County and fighting rekindling relationships there, the sophomore 13 episodes have him embracing his roots … and his ex-wife, Winona (Natalie Zea).

As always, what drives Justified are the men and women Raylan and his fellow marshals chase down, which include Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), the white supremacist with a penchant for blowing up African American churches, and who may or may not have become a good guy. No need to worry if Boyd has decided to walk the straight and narrow; a new villain has cropped up to wage war with Raylan in the form of Mags Bennett (Dexter’s Margo Martindale). Mags runs the local general store while her son is the sheriff. With dirty dealings in drugs and homemade hooch, Mags is Kentucky’s answer to Miami’s Tony Montana, putting her right in Raylan’s sights.

Photobucket

... “Elmore’s world is always less about good guys and bad guys as people who respect each other and who don’t,” Olyphant explains. “It comes down to who’s cool and who’s an asshole.”

... “It’s all cowboys and Indians when it comes down to it,” he says with a chuckle. “I get a great deal of fulfillment out of it. Every now and then you actually put on a cowboy hat and it kind of brings it all home. It’s always fun to (play) cops and robbers, and in this case it’s kind of more like cops and hillbillies.”

Justifed airs in the US on Wednesday at 10/9C on FX, and in Canada on Super Channel on Monday and 9pm ET.

BEING HUMAN 3 (UK) - TOTAL SCIFI ONLINE: Sinead Keenan Interview

Wednesday 02 March 2011
by Paul Simpson

Sinead Keenan’s Nina begun her Being Human journey antagonistically inclined towards werewolf George – and became even more annoyed after he infected her with the werewolf curse. But in the third season of the BBC Three show, their relationship has become one of the core elements of the series, with Nina’s pregnancy one of the central storylines. Paul Simpson spoke to her on set as she filmed the final episodes...

Photobucket

... What was your reaction when you found out Nina was going to get pregnant?

Sinead Keenan: "I was delighted in one sense; in another, I thought, “Now what does that mean? Will I have the baby? Will it be a baby? Will it be a pup? Will it be normal? Will it not?”

We have to sort out whether the werewolf thing is like puberty: does it hit you when you’re 16, if you’re not scratched and all that malarkey? I knew there would be a lot of fun to be had. It’s been a lot of hard work, but mainly fun..."

Being Human airs on Sunday nights (BBC Three) in the UK, and in the US, on BBC America on Saturday at 9/8C.

STAGE AND STUDIO: Riese: Kingdom Falling - Future of Web Series: Ryan Copple Audio Interview

Dmae Roberts explores the growing landscape of the web series via an actor, director and producer working on three different projects. Actor Harold Philips and Director Micki Selvitella, both theatre artists, will tell us what it’s like to work on web series in Portland. Then Ryan Copple, co-creator of SyFy.com’s Riese: Kingdom Falling will share his experiences working on one of the most successful web series that received 1.2 million streams in two months.

... Ryan Copple is a Vancouver, BC writer, editor and co-creator (with Kaleena Kiff) of the award-winning steam-punk digital series Riese narrated by Sanctuary and Stargate SG1 star Amanda Tapping. The series began as an indie online series and then was picked up for season 2 by the SyFy Channel to run online last fall. The series featured actors from many well-known television series. Riese was so successful that SyFy ordered an online web series from another indie producer called Mercury Men.

DOWNLOAD

Highlights from the show:

- It is now easier than ever before for artists to distribute their work. Anyone can upload videos to sites like YouTube or Vimeo.

- Web series are shot with small screens in mind. But that doesn’t mean skimping on quality. Ryan Copple and the rest of the team behind Riese say: “We never wanted to be good enough for the web. We just wanted to be good.”

- Artists need to get creative about funding, whether it’s through product placement or using a site like kickstarter.com, which allows artists to crowd-fund their projects.

- New media is interactive and multi-platformed. Before Riese was launched, the creators released an alternate-reality game that set up the story.

- One of the best things about the future of the web series: creative freedom. “Don’t be afraid to get your story out there,” Copple says, “That’s the beauty of the web, is you can just tell whatever you want to tell.”

FALLING SKIES - TNT VIDEO: "Only Hope" Promo

Watch the Falling Skies on-air spot "Only Hope," then tune in this June for the premiere of the new series.

Falling Skies opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force.

At the center of the series is Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), a Boston history professor whose family has been torn apart. His wife was killed in the initial attack, and one of his three sons has been captured. Determined to get his son back and to ensure the safety of his other two sons, Tom must put his extensive knowledge of military history to the test as one of the leaders of the resistance movement known as the 2nd Mass, because of their location in Boston, Mass. They are constantly trying to gain intelligence about the aliens in order to one day outsmart and overtake them and hopefully rebuild their lives.

Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) co-stars as Anne Glass, a pediatrician who works with the surviving children to help them cope with the traumatic upheaval in their lives. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT's Into the West) plays a fierce leader of the resistance, Weaver. The series also stars Drew Roy (Secretariat) as Hal, Tom's oldest son and a growing fighter in the resistance movement; Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom's youngest son; Connor Jessup (The Saddle Club) as Ben, Tom's son who was captured by aliens; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned teenager who helps Anne in the group's makeshift medical clinic. Colin Cunningham (Living in Your Car) is John Pope, the leader of an outlaw motorcycle gang and Sarah Carter (Shark) is Margaret, a wary survivor of Pope's gang.

FALLING SKIES focuses on the resilience of the survivors and their determination to maintain their humanity when all else has been destroyed. It is a tale of endurance, commitment and courage in which everyday people are called upon to become heroes. They may be outmatched, outnumbered and outgunned, but nothing can beat the human spirit. Most of all, the series is about the ties that bind people together in the most difficult of circumstances.

The aliens in the series are mighty, mysterious and merciless. They are highly intelligent and use military-like tactics, which makes them an overwhelming force against the 2nd Mass. There are two types of aliens that the human survivors have named Skitters and Mechs. Combining live action and special visual effects, the Skitters have spider-like bodies and incredible strength and agility. The deadly, robotic Mechs stand upright and can shoot bullets from their arms. The aliens control captured children, like Tom's son Ben, through bio-mechanical harnesses but have yet to reveal their ultimate plan for them.

FALLING SKIES is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, along with DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, Graham Yost (Justified, The Pacific) and screenwriter Robert Rodat. Rodat, who earned an Oscar® nomination for his screenplay for Saving Private Ryan, wrote the pilot from an idea he co-conceived with Spielberg. Mark Verheiden (Heroes, Battlestar Galactica) and Greg Beeman (Heroes, Smallville) are co-executive producers. The pilot was directed by Carl Franklin (One False Move, Out of Time).
