TV DRAMA WATCH: Fringe: Interview with Exec Producers J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner

by Lynn DeVries on February 14, 2011

Once again, the executive producers for FOX’s hit series Fringe sat down to answer some questions about this week’s new episode of the show. Exec Producers J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner are very friendly to talk to and at times seem to even finish each other’s sentences. But they tackled many questions with good humor and without giving too much away. Be sure to watch this week’s episode of Fringe when it airs on Friday at 9/8c on FOX. Here’s how the conversation went:

... Q: Obviously, it seems like two of the main characters, Peter and Olivia are sort of unraveling at this point in time, Peter more so than Olivia. Are they going to sort of get worse before they get better or what can you tell us about that?

Jeff Pinker: They will get worse and better. I don’t think the value won’t be good or bad. It’s going to be more complicated than that. Since Olivia returned and their relationship sort of shattered and they’ve been trying to pick up the pieces, they’ve been getting closer and they will continue to, but the problems that they’re dealing with are going to continue to complicate.

So it won’t be as simple as, “Hey, now we’ve put our relationship troubles to bed and we can be a couple again,” or, “Hey, now we’ve dealt with the problems of our universe and our relationship is taking a back seat.” The two are going to be—we’re throwing a whole bunch of things at them including the consequences of the episode that you haven’t yet seen that we’re talking about now.

J.H. Wyman: We’re always trying to get deeper, more complex emotions because we find that’s a really rich area for us to investigate in. There are so many facets to a real relationship, and these are incredible circumstances that they’re going through, but we try and make it as deep as we can. So you’ll see a whole bunch of shifting still to come in the entire rest of the season...

LC: "I think it will look and feel very different. Success has given us the confidence to take the characters and the show to more daring places. You see the repercussions and pay-off of the dreadful places the characters went to in the last series - especially poor Annie, who was ripped from this world and begins this series in purgatory..."

... Question: As a fan of the U.K. version of Being Human, which is coming back for a third season Saturday night, I was skeptical about the SyFy version. I've watched it for four episodes and 0have decided it is pretty good. I only knew one of the lead actors, Sam Huntington, from other things, but it seems Sam Witwer may be familiar to many SyFy viewers and so was a smart casting choice as vampire Aidan. SyFy has sprinkled episodes of Being Human all over their schedule, including bumping my SyFy favorite Merlin on Friday to 10 one week so I wonder how it is doing ratings-wise. I also wonder what you think of BBC America bringing back its version so soon after the launch of the American version. I don't know if I want to watch two versions of the same show at the same time. Is BBCA trying to strangle the baby, or are they hoping for a boost for their show with the attention given to the SyFy version? — Frank

Matt Roush: From what I can tell, Syfy is pleased with the performance of its version of Being Human, but I'm afraid "pretty good" isn't doing it for me. I'm too attached to the original, and hope to post a review later this week of the first episodes of the new season. Watching Syfy's version seems both redundant and unsatisfying (with the exception of Witwer's broodiness, the actors' broad rhythms make me feel I'm watching a strained, shrill sitcom). I was rather surprised when BBC America announced it would be overlapping the current Syfy run with its new episodes. But BBCA has been attempting to air its originals closer in sync with the British broadcasts, so that could explain it. And it doesn't hurt that the show is more visible now to the American audience, so I'm going with the "boost" strategy rather than the colorful "strangle" metaphor.

... Question: I love Fringe because it is great escapism, it is the only show to come close to filling the void The X-Files left and because John Noble is delightfully enjoyable to watch as Walter Bishop. However, the Fringe science on the show is more believable then Peter having more than platonic feeling for blond Olivia. Do you think the two have genuine sexual chemistry? A whole dimension's survival hinges on which Olivia Peter will choose. I thought John Scott was Olivia's true love. Human Target aside, why do you think it has never been brought up that there is another John Scott on the other side? How much longer do you think the show will continue with the two dimensions? Why are the producers making the show about a love triangle? It seems like it will shorten the life of the show. I hate "bug" episodes of any show, so it is a testament to how good Fringe is that I am still looking forward to the next episode. Love your insight regarding the shows. — Susan

Matt Roush: I'm loving where they've taken Fringe this season, and if the serial aspects work against it being a bigger hit, well, that ship has pretty much sailed. The dual universe story seems built into Fringe's DNA, so while I haven't a clue about what game-changing note they're planning to end with this season, I don't imagine it will ever go away entirely. And I'm not sure about sexual chemistry, but Peter and Olivia certainly have an emotional bond that I find credible — especially in these last few episodes. Her pain when Peter brought her coffee the way Faux-livia likes it? Ouch. And I totally bought Peter hooking up with the more sexually aggressive (and purposefully seductive) Faux-livia in the first part of the season, because as he told Our Olivia, he felt at the time as if he was turning her into someone new. It's the most twisted love triangle imaginable, and that's perfect for a show like this. Regarding John Scott: Besides the obvious reasons — the actor was otherwise engaged, and maybe it would be just a little tricky to bring the guy back after his real-life relationship with the show's star ended — I figure the two words aren't exact parallels of each other. Where's the real world version of Faux-livia's beau Frank or newly minted team leader Lincoln? But I hear you on the "bug"-show thing. I could barely watch some of those scenes. In a good way.

THE TV CHICK: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Meaghan Rath (Sally) from SyFy’s Being Human

February 14th, 2011 by thetvchick

A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost all live in the same house together. No, seriously, that’ the premise of SyFy’s Being Human 2011, which is based on the BBC series of the same name. I was immediately intrigued by the premise and hoping for something I could latch on to. I did not watch the original, so I can’t speak to whether this series is better/worse/the same, but I can say that I have really been enjoying it a ton. Being Human is about more than just the supernatural (although that’s an added bonus), it’s about three people, trying to find their way in the world and counting on each other to help with that process. The ghost, Sally, starts out stuck in the house when Aiden (the vampire) and Sam (the werewolf) move in. Sally was engaged and died suddenly by falling down the stairs of the very same house. She is navigating the world of ghost-dom, all while trying to figure out what happens next. I recently had the chance to chat with Meaghan Rath, who plays Sally, about how she’s able to relate to her ghost alter-ego, an upcoming flashback, and why she thinks you should tune into the show...

Photobucket

... Do you have a favorite moment from filming the show so far?

MR: "My favorite moment probably of the entire series [so far] is in episode 2 when I’m flying down the stairs. That was something so special to shoot because we actually shot that on the 2nd day of shooting and it was a big process to shoot that because I had to get a full body cast made. What it was is that I was lying in this cast of my body, and there’s this metal spike sticking out of my stomach, and five huge men tipped me over and pretty much put me on this giant pole in the middle of this completely green studio. And the camera was on a crane, and they had the wind machine going and they had the playback going. And it was really this beautiful moment for the entire crew as well. Jeremy Carver was there who’s one of our writers and show-runners and he was saying Anna [Frick] who is our other writer, they wrote this and part of them felt like it was going to be cut from the script, because it is a fantasy sequence, it is really extravagant for just one little piece. And so they were just amazed that they kept it in and it actually turned out so beautifully. And I think it was a special moment for everybody, and I was really moved by the whole thing. I really felt like I was in it, and I felt like I was thinking about Sally so much. I care about her so much. I care about her journey. So it was sort of like a cathartic experience. It was really nice..."

... Question: After watching the last 10 minutes of last week's Bones play out, I was left disappointed and heavy by what happened (which was a big bummer after watching the wonderful Friday Night Lights finale beforehand). Booth clearly should not have been so presumptuous in proposing, when clearly (at least in my humble opinion) he was doing it to prove to himself that he has moved on and can have a successful, lasting relationship. I understand how he could say the things he said at the bar to Brennan. He was upset. I guess what bothers me most is that this episode highlighted just how off and not fun the relationship between Booth and Brennan has been this season, which has made the show much less enjoyable to watch. It makes me even more mad to read comments by the writers who act like they haven't made a misstep. What do you think about the whole situation? Do you think the tone of the show and the central relationship can be fixed? After reading all the heated comments on the community boards (which I know you advise against), it would be nice to hear a levelheaded assessment. — Amy

Matt Roush: Well, maybe it isn't the best idea to use Bones as a Friday Night Lights chaser. Honestly, I'm not sure what the show's writers could do to please the unruly constituents. They break up Booth and the opposite-of-loved Hannah, and you'd think there'd at least be a cheer for that. They give Booth and Bones a climactic scene of emotional reconciliation at the bar, which incidentally is one of David Boreanaz' most affecting scenes in a long while. It's called drama, folks. That said, I don't think anyone is blind to the fact that fans were more irritated than pleased about the Hannah obstacle, but now that they've fixed it and reset the Booth-Bones partnership with some new shadings of awareness of just what they mean to each other, I'm thinking maybe we can just sit back and enjoy the show again for a while. I don't think the show or certainly the central relationship is irreparably broken, and the numbers (thankfully abetted by the American Idol lead-in) seem to bear that out.

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Being Human's Meaghan Rath - Let The Spirit Move You

by Steve Eramo

Sometimes we all feel lonely or disconnected from the world, and perhaps no one knows that better than Being Human’s Sally Malik. Not too long ago she and her fiancé Danny were planning a future together in their new home. Then, however, Sally was tragically killed by a fall down the stairs, but rather than “moving on,” her ghost remained trapped within the four walls that once held such happiness and potential. Invisible to others and unable to communicate with them, Sally’s only respite from such solitude was the occasional visit from Danny and prospective renters. She had no idea, though, that her afterlife was about to change in a big way, and actress Meaghan Rath, who plays Sally, could not wait to take that journey with her otherworldly TV self.

Photobucket

“I just loved Sally so much from the first time I read the script,” says Rath. “I feel like a lot of women, especially those in their 20’s, can identify with someone like her. I mean, we’re dealing with someone who was vibrant and passionate and knew what she wanted out of life, where she was going and the kind of things that she wanted to do. Here’s a woman who was confident and secure with herself and who then falls in love and loses herself in another person. However, when she dies, all that is stripped away from her, but she still has those same needs and longings.

“So I think it’s really relatable to a lot of people, and heartbreaking, too, which is what I initially connected with, and it’s been amazing to play someone like Sally. It’s one of the greatest acting challenges I’ve ever had because she’s such a well-rounded character. She goes from moments of really heightened excitement to these rock bottom lows, and as an actor that’s extremely exciting to play because it’s a real person. That spectrum of emotions is something that people go through all the time, and it’s nice to see that onscreen as well as in the scripts because you’re getting to play an actual human being and not someone who is one dimensional. I couldn’t have asked for anything more...”
