THE DEADBOLT: Villains and World Views with Mark Valley of Human Target

by Troy Rogers

Fans of Human Target will get a double dose of Mark Valley in the role of Chance this week when Human Target airs "Kill Bob" on Monday January 31 in which Valley as Chance works to protect a husband who thinks his wife is a Russian spy and out to kill him for classified defense secrets. Also in "Kill Bob," Ames has a secret of her own that she doesn’t want Chance to find out. On Wednesday, February 2, Mark Valley and the Human Target team welcomes guest star Tony Hale back into a new FOX mission in "The Trouble with Harry" in which Chance is reunited with Harry (guest star Hale) when he is hired to protect the girlfriend of a rival security agency owner.

Ahead of this week's double dose of Human Target, TheDeadbolt interrogated actor Mark Valley about the dynamic that Tony Hale brings to the show, the difference between Russian villains now and three decades ago during the Cold War, and how playing the Human Target role of Chance has impacted how Mark Valley looks at world events...

... THE DEADBOLT: Can you talk about the dynamic that Tony Hale brings to the show and how that impacts Chance?

MARK VALLEY: It’s pretty funny. The first episode that Tony did, he kind of gets himself into a mess, comes looking for Chance, and Jackie And Chi’s characters have to bail him out of a problem. I was always curious, how are Chance and Harry friends? What did they experience together? How did they meet each other if Harry is someone who is always having problems?

But in this next episode coming up, you really see Harry’s perceptive abilities and his ability to put things together. I mean, he is sort of a Pink Panther detective in most ways. But you see that he does fumble onto the truth and some meaningful stuff for Chance. So, in that respect, you’re like, “Oh, okay! Now I see why they know each other...”

Starring Canadian Christine Chatelain (Sanctuary), RIESE: KINGDOM FALLING is a fantasy-adventure steampunk web series that chronicles the life of a mysterious wanderer named Riese. A life-on-the-run from a world with a dim future, Riese and her trusted wolf companion, Fenrir, flee their dying land of Eleysia in search of freedom as they are hunted by assassins of The Sect, a terrifying religious entity. As she tries to piece together her mysterious past, Riese takes on a life and death journey with the balance and the fate of the world lying in the palm of her hands.

Narrated by genre icon Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary), RIESE features a cavalcade of Canadian talent from the world of popular speculative drama, including Ryan Robbins (Caprica), Patrick Gilmore (Stargate Universe), Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica), Sharon Taylor (Stargate Universe) and Ben Cotton (Harper’s Island). The 10-part web series and 2-hour telecast features other sci-fi mainstays including Allison Mack (Smallville) and Emilie Ullerup (Sanctuary).

The series won the Streamy Award for Best Cinematography in a Web Series with a further three nominations for Best Sound Design, Best Foreign Series and Art Direction. Shot in Vancouver, RIESE was created by Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff, and produced by Galen Fletcher and Nicholas Humphries.

Remarks from Mike Connors (Mannix), Bill Cosby and Robert Culp (I Spy), Angie Dickinson (Police Woman) and James Garner (Rockford Files) accent this delightful, more than "just the facts, ma'am" look back at yesteryear's groundbreaking crime dramas (Dragnet included). Connors, for example, remembers how the pace of his innovative PI program was patterned after commercials; and Culp recalls standing up for acting newcomer Cosby, who the producer wanted to dump after the first I Spy episode, by insisting that if Cos went, he would follow.
