By Morgan Jeffery

[NOTE: Sherlock season one has an encore run in the US on PBS beginning Sunday, January 15, 2012 at 10/9C. Season two premieres in the UK returns to BBC One on January 1 at 8.10pm.]

... Q: Are you excited about tackling the most iconic stories in the Holmes canon?

Benedict Cumberbatch: "Yeah, very, very excited! There's a weight of expectation, but it's brilliant, because those are the [stories] that everyone is most familiar with. Again, there's trepidation and [you feel] a responsibility because people have a very set idea in their minds of what those stories are - what the outcome is, the relationships...

"But the scripts I've read have been fantastic. They're just brilliantly imaginative, engaging and witty. They're utterly loyal to the intention of the original, but are thoroughly fresh and perky. So any fears I had were allayed instantly...

SCIFI AND TV TALK: Q & A With Merlin's Bradley James

by Steve Eramo
December 30, 2011

At one time or another, most men are faced with trying to measure up to their father’s expectations. That is sometimes easier said than done, especially when others are involved. In BBC’s Merlin, Prince Arthur Pendragon has been trained to fight since birth, and his father, King Uther Pendragon, plans for his son to one day take over as the ruler of Camelot. Much to their surprise, that day comes earlier than expected in the show’s fourth season. With his servant, protector, friend (and magician) Merlin by his side, Arthur must now look after the well-being after every man, woman and child in his kingdom and protect them from those scheming to end his reign by using magic against him.

Since the first episode of Merlin, actor Bradley James has delivered a convincing and thoroughly enjoyable performance as Arthur. Following in the footsteps of his series costar, Colin Morgan (Merlin), James has done a BBC Press Q & A to talk about his character’s story arc in the show’s fourth season, which has its North American premiere on Friday, January 6th @ 10:00 p.m. EST/PST on America’s Syfy channel, and Saturday, January 7th @ 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on Canada’s SPACE Channel...

Photobucket

... Q: Another important addition is Agravaine (Nathaniel Parker). Has he brought something extra to Merlin?

Bradley James: "Definitely. Very early on, the audience becomes aware that Agravaine’s allegiance is to Morgana [Katie McGrath]. Naturally, Arthur is completely unaware of this, which creates great dramatic tension. Someone has to play dumb – and as we’ve come to find out in Merlin, it's usually Arthur! But it also adds to the drama of the series that someone so close to Arthur can be the one that digs the knife in and twists it. As far as Arthur is concerned, his mother's brother is someone to be trusted implicitly. But the audience can see the cloaked dagger. Nathaniel Parker is very lively as Agravaine and has a great, dark look..."

17TH PRECINCT - VIDEO: PILOT

Created by Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore for the NBC 2011-2012 season, this science fiction/fantasy pilot was not picked up. It has a flavor of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files - and also a flavor of Battlestar Galactica, with so many of that series' cast involved in this project, including Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Caprica's Esai Morales.

And, as it was partially filmed in Vancouver, BC, Canada, there are some familiar Stargate alums in the cast as well, including Heather Doerksen, Robert Moloney, Don Thompson, Doug Abrahams, and (I think) Allison Hossack.

"Oil, electricity, coal ... the power that drives modern society. But what if science had never been invented? What if we relied on .. magic? What if plants and fire powered our world? And what if the police solved crimes in ways that we can't imagine? This is 17th Precinct."

Which takes place in San Francisco - uh, Excelsior.

Cast includes Tricia Helfer, West Wing's Stockard Channing, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Eamonn Walker, Matt Long, Heather Doerksen, Quinn Lord, Robert Moloney, The Killing's Brandon Jay McLaren and Valin Shinyei.

SANCTUARY - SHOW PATROL: AMANDA TAPPING TEASES SEASON FOUR FINALE - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2011 AT 10/9C ON SYFY

'Sanctuary' wraps Season 4 with 'final reckoning'

By Curt Wagner
December 30, 2011

If you thought Helen Magnus made a shocking play in the first part of the “Sanctuary" Season 4 finale, wait until you see what show does in "Sanctuary for None: Part 2," airing at 9 p.m. Dec. 30 on Syfy.

Star and producer Amanda Tapping said Magnus's latest surprise play is the "final reckoning" for the Sanctuary team.

If you're caught up with events, Will (Robin Dunne) currently is being forced to work with SCIU director Greg Addison (Brian Markinson) while Bigfoot (Christopher Heyerdahl) has decided to remain in the abnormal homeland and team with rebel leader Caleb (guest star Gil Bellows). Henry (Ryan Robbins), Tesla (Jonathon Young) and Kate (Agam Darshi) are sided firmly with Magnus, even though they doubt her move to expose the Sanctuary to the public was wise.

In tonight’s episode, Magnus and Caleb still are struggling to keep the abnormal homeland safe from SCIU and the other human organizations that would see it destroyed. Tapping said it was interesting working with guest star Bellows.

He is such a Zen and really lovely guy. He is so sweet and he was so happy to be on our set … [but] he plays this dastardly villain you love to hate,” she said. “We’d give each other a hug and then launch into a fistfight, so it was good...”

Fringe - TV Guide: 2011's Best Episodes

Source: TV Guide [follow all link for the complete columns]

Fringe season 4

From Oprah's surprisingly low-key farewell to the year's most soul-crushing break-up on The Good Wife (Kalicia, no!), the year was packed with fantastic hours of television — pretty much all of which we watched. There were teary goodbyes (Friday Night Lights' Texas forever! Smallville's tights and flights!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations take place on the front porch of a cabin, like on Homeland?) and of course we made room for a little Glee (because certain underdogs deserved it). Which made the list. Tune in all week for our top 25.

Here's the first batch in our weeklong countdown of 2011's best episodes...

FRINGE

"Lysergic Acid Diethylamide," Fringe

The title alone indicated that this episode would be a trip. When Olivia attempted to extricate William Bell's consciousness from hers by taking LSD, the world went topsy-turvy, and the episode switched from live-action to animation. The twisty, Inception-like hour also marked Leonard Nimoy's farewell to the series.

Justified

JUSTIFIED

"The Spoil," Justified

Here's the second batch in our weeklong countdown of 2011's best episodes...

It's hard to highlight a single episode of Margo Martindale's Emmy-winning season as Mags Bennett, but her rousing speech in "The Spoil." Martindale's effortless, smooth-as-Mags' homemade moonshine delivery reminds us how smart a villain she is, and how much of a fight she's willing to put up to protect her people's "way of livin' and dyin.'" And while Mags' icy mean streak didn't fully come out until the following episode, her actions in this hour put us on serious red alert.

Doctor Who 3

DOCTOR WHO

Here's the third batch in our weeklong countdown of 2011's best episodes...

"The Doctor's Wife," Doctor Who

It takes fantasy/horror/sci-fi author Neil Gaiman to pen an episode that is preposterous to describe, yet heartbreaking in that signature Doctor Who way. Through a series of convoluted and nefarious events, his time machine, aka the TARDIS, shuts down and its matrix disappears, only to be incarnated in a daffy lady named Idris. The Doctor always did call the TARDIS "old girl," right? He and the TARDIS-possessed woman reminisce, banter, flirt and even kiss, and by episode's end, we've bought into their longtime, intimate relationship. Too bad the TARDIS can't remain in that body or ever have a voice again, but the affection we feel for that big blue police box has doubled.

Vampire Diaries

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Here's the fourth batch in our weeklong countdown of 2011's best episodes...

"The Sun Also Rises," The Vampire Diaries

The second season's penultimate episode was filled with tears, culminating in Klaus turning Aunt Jenna into a vampire before ultimately killing her. Worse, watching Elena lose her only semblance of a parent and knowing she was responsible for the death was wrenching. We've felt terror, hysteria, and laughed pretty darn hard while watching this show; this was the first time we sobbed.

Game 2

"Baelor," Game of Thrones

A pivotal event in this episode is so shockingly audacious that even now we'd like to issue a spoiler alert lest readers miss out on one of television's biggest surprises. HBO's epic fantasy series may have been hard to grasp at first -- a huge cast, foreign-sounding names, a feudal-type setting and baffling political intrigues -- but eventually we got to know the central characters, especially hero, patriarch and all-around upstanding fellow Ned Stark, played by Lord of the Rings' Sean Bean. We rooted for the morally high-minded right-hand man of the king, and so viewers could only watch (and rewind their DVRs) in disbelief as Ned was summarily beheaded in an act of betrayal -- with his two young daughters watching -- in a public square. What? Killing off someone who was supposedly the protagonist and emotional center of the show did not compute -- and drove home the fact that no one, not even the passive viewers, are untouched by the fantastical cruelty of this world conceived by author George R.R. Martin.

Smallville

SMALLVILLE

Here's the fifth batch in our weeklong countdown of 2011's best episodes...

"Finale," Smallville

It took 10 years for Clark Kent to become Superman, but the series finale soared as the Man of Steel (in his super suit at long last!) took flight. Like a proud parent, our hearts swelled as we watched Clark realize his full potential after a decade's worth of trials, and fittingly, both of his fathers (Jor-El and an apparition of Jonathan Kent) presented him with the cape before he took off to save the world once more...

JUSTIFIED - NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Most Memorable TV Characters 2011

BY David Hinckley
Wednesday, December 28 2011

... Here’s our list of the 10 most memorable TV characters the year. They don't necessarily represent the best shows on TV, though in many cases and probably not by coincidence they do.

Not in any particular order:

Timothy Olyphant, “Justified,” FX.

Olyphant was splendid in HBO's “Deadwood,” and he’s taken it up another notch as sheriff Raylan Givens in this adaptation of Elmore Leonard stories.

Translating a great written character to flesh and blood is hard work, because so much of what happens in the imagination can get lost.

Olyphant ends up making Raylan richer, with a combination of casual confidence and just enough clay in his feet...

Justified season three premieres on FX on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 10/9C.

FRINGE - ASSIGNMENT X: Exclusive Interview: Kirk Acevedo discusses the different worlds of PRIME SUSPECT and FRINGE

The actor also hints whether or not he'll be back on FRINGE

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN
December 28th, 2011

Bronx-born actor Kirk Acevedo has spent a good portion of his performing career playing people on one side or the other of the law. After costarring as a soldier in HBO’s landmark WWII miniseries BAND OF BROTHERS, Acevedo was a series regular in 46 episodes of HBO’s prison drama OZ as inmate Miguel Alvarez. He has guest-starred on the original LAW & ORDER, LAW & ORDER: SVU and LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY.

Even when he’s in genre fare, Acevedo seems to wind up in law-enforcement – he’s Fringe Division’s Charlie Francis in both universes on FRINGE. He’s also starring in Syfy’s upcoming TV movie COLLISION EARTH (no word yet on whether he’ll ditch the badge or not for this one) [NOTE: Premieres on Syfy Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 9/8C. Now he’s a series regular as NYPD police detective Luisito Calderon on NBC’s recently cancelled PRIME SUSPECT. Acevedo gives us the lowdown on his legal eagle roles...
